Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama (born January 17, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American lawyer. She was the first lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017 as the wife of the 44th US President Barack Obama.

Michelle Robinson was born in 1964 in the south of Chicago as the daughter of the former butcher and later retrained machinists Fraser Timothy Robinson (1935-1991) and the secretary Marian Robinson (born in 1937). She grew up in modest circumstances. Their ancestors were mostly black slaves from the southern states.

She graduated from Whitney Young Magnet High School in 1981. She then began her studies with a major in sociology and the minor African-American studies at Princeton University, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1985. Immediately thereafter, she moved to Harvard University, where she graduated in 1988 with the academic degree Juris Doctor. She was initially a member of the Methodist Church, later she joined the United Church of Christ, a coalition of Lutheran and Reformed Christians.

After studying at Harvard, Michelle Robinson was a member of the Chicago office of the law firm Sidley & Austin, where she focused on property rights and marketing. There she met her future husband Barack Obama. The two married in October 1992 at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. The couple has two daughters, Malia Ann (1998) and Natasha ("Sasha" 2001).

After leaving the firm, she moved to Chicago City Council as a Mayor's Advisor and Plenipotentiary for Planning and Urban Development. In 1993, Michelle Obama became the executive director of the Chicago office of the non-governmental organization Public Allies.

Another change in her professional career was moving from city government to the University of Chicago in 1996, where she was initially responsible for the development of the University Community Service Center, before becoming Executive Director and later Vice President for Community and External Affairs. At the same time she was on the board of Tree House Foods Inc.

Three months after the announcement of Barack Obama's presidential nomination, Michelle Obama interrupted her own professional career in 2008, devoting herself entirely to her husband's election campaign.

In the run-up to her husband's presidential candidacy, Michelle Obama gave electoral speeches and aroused a lot of media interest in her through numerous interviews and appearances on television. She was also often attracted by irony-laden remarks and anecdotes about the family life of the Obama. However, as Obama's chances for the US presidency increased for Barack Obama, she held back more and more with such statements.

Michelle Obama regularly edited his speeches and supported him as a consultant in his bid for the post of president. In December 2008, she ranged to 9th of the most influential graduates of Harvard Law School. In late 2011, she was increasingly seen as a critic of how things were going in the White House.

After Obama's election as the 44th President of the United States, she became the new First Lady in the White House. During the representative appearances of her husband, she was always at his side. The press reported extensively on her as stylish and fashionable appearance.

For the cover of the US issue of Vogue magazine in March 2009, Michelle Obama was photographed by Annie Leibovitz. Vogue has presented (with the exception of Bess Truman) each First Lady in a picture report since 1929; Obama was the second First Lady on the front page after Hillary Clinton. It was reprinted on the cover of the April 2013 issue of Vogue.

In the youth series iCarly she played herself in the episode Visit of the First Lady in a supporting role. In the series Jessie she played in the episode From White House into Our House also in a supporting role. In the series Navy CIS she played in the episode Henry (Homefront) again in a supporting role.

In the US presidential campaign of 2008, her statement about her pride in the United States of America was controversial. In response to the Republican criticism of her statement that she is now proud of her country for the first time, she emphasized how much she loved her country during the election campaign. Especially her referring to this criticism speech before the Democratic National Convention in August 2008 was received largely good and received mostly positive comments. According to a survey by Rasmussen Reports, it reached the US Americans for the first time approval values of 55%.

According to a biography of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy published in September 2010, Michelle Obama is said to have told her that working as a First Lady is "hell" for her. Both the press secretary of Obama and the French embassy in Washington, however, denied the alleged statement. In addition, Bruni-Sarkozy distanced herself from the authors of her biography, which had not been authorized. In 2017, a spider native to Cuba was named after her: Spintharus michelleobamaae.
