Have I mentioned that elephants are my favorite? Along with smiling. I’ve also decided that we need to verb the word “festive.” So, we’re back in town, but still —festifying? festivitying?— still making merry! At least one more day until I’m back to the Bookstagram...but I’m around. What have you been up to this weekend? πŸ“š 🐘 #roadtrip #waltdisneyworld #dumbo #elephant #magickingdom #thisiswhatourwinterlookslike #festive #makingmerry
We interrupt your previously scheduled Bookstagramming with this #roadtrip ! Back to the books tomorrow or Monday! 🏰 #disney #disneyworld #waltdisneyworld #magickingdom #mickeysverymerrychristmasparty #mickeysverymerrychristmasparty2018 #sistertime #verymerrychristmasparty #cinderellascastle #disneychristmas
I’ve never read much (or any?) Trollope before, so I’m looking forward to digging into this one over the holidays. Any Trollope fans out there? If I like it, what should I try next? πŸ“š πŸ“š #christmasstories #christmasbooks #anthonytrollope #disney #cookie #mickeymouse #mickeycookies #bookworm #bibliophile #instareads #books #book #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #bookstagrammer #readersofinstagram #readinglife #writerlife #writersofinstagram #writersofig #readersofig #booknerd #coverlove #booksbooksbooks #bookish #igbooks #igreads
Is it still Bookstagram if we’re talking about short stories? Or is there a separate place for that? #storystagram ? πŸ–Š “The Loudest Voice” by Grace Paley tells the story of a young Jewish girl who gets the lead in the school Christmas pageant because she has, as the title says, the loudest voice. The tale then chronicles the varied reactions of everyone around her to this news. Grace Paley is, of course, masterful with words. This story questions, complicates, and charms all at once, and I especially wanted to post it during Chanukah. Happy Chanukah to all who are celebrating! πŸ“š πŸ“š #gracepaley #theloudestvoice #jewishliterature #shortstory #jellydoughnut #americanliterature #bookworm #bibliophile #instareads #books #book #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #bookstagrammer #readersofinstagram #readinglife #writerlife #writersofinstagram #writerslife #writer #writersofinsta #writersofig #readersofig #booknerd #booksbooksbooks #bookish #igbooks #igreads
Another change-up from what I’d planned to post today, but I’ve been thinking about this book all day long. I worked on one of my manuscripts today, and when a cameo character showed up, I kept hearing a passage from this book in relation to her. πŸ“š I don’t reread The Bluest Eye often, because the subject matter —racism, sexism, sexual abuse, and their collective effect on the self-esteem of young, Black girls— is such a difficult topic for a sympathetic/empathetic reader. It hurts to read. But Toni Morrison tells the truth in a way I’ve never heard it told before or since. The beauty of the prose, the graceful seasonal structure, the depth and rough-edged sweetness of the young characters...all these qualities lodged in my chest and never left. I can feel them there when I love or breathe. πŸ“š If I could have, I’d have posted this picture with marigolds. 🌼 For #jinglebookrock , definitely a #classic . πŸ“š #tonimorrison #bluesteye #thebluesteye #nobelprize #pulitzerprize #icon #africanamericanliterature #blackliterature #blackbooks #blackbooksmatter #booksandflowers #americanliterature #bookworm #bibliophile #instareads #books #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #readersofinstagram #readinglife #writerslife #writer #writersofinstagram #writersofinsta #writersofig #readersofig #booknerd
This post is a departure from what I’d planned for today, but seeing all the fun #ghoststories posts for #jinglebookrock immediately made me think of Robertson Davies’ High Spirits. πŸ‘» Davies himself called these “cheerful ghost stories,” and the best ones are laugh-out-loud funny. They’re sometimes a bit bawdy, a bit macabre, or a bit irreverent, but I have delicate sensibilities and I did fine with them when I first read them years ago. Davies told these stories, one each year, at his university’s annual holiday party, and many of them feature academic spoofs of the highest degree. (Oh come on! Like I could let that pun go!). “The Ghost Who Vanished by Degrees” is an absolute must for anyone who’s ever sought one. I may be due for a reread, because I remember it being full of the “fruit cakyness and port-winyness” that he describes in his own ghost story reading. Alas, I think it’s out of print, which is a shame, since I’ve often wanted to give it as a gift. Look for it at a used bookstore or library, perhaps? And be wary of the spectral fingers on your shoulder! πŸ“š #robertsondavies #highspirits #academia #academichumor #ghosts #canadianliterature #bookworm #bibliophile #instareads #books #book #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #bookstagrammer #readersofinstagram #readinglife #writersofinstagram #writersofig #readersofig #booknerd #booksbooksbooks #bookish #igbooks #igreads
Any fans of Bachelor Brothers’ Bed & Breakfast out there? πŸ› πŸ₯ž I wouldn’t blame you if you’re unfamiliar, since it came out in 1993. For some, that may make it dated, but to me, it has a delightful, vintagey feel. This humourous fictional tale (masquerading as non-fiction) of two aging brothers running a B & B in small-town Canada is filled with kooky, quirky, heart-warming characters. Even the pets have strange habits and big personalities. I could best describe it as #threepines without the mystery. In fact, I strongly suspect that #louisepenny may have been influenced by Bachelor Bros, consciously or unconsciously, when she created Three Pines. Or maybe these charming, wacky small towns are just the particular gift of Canadian authors. πŸ™‚ πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ But the absolute best part, from a Bookstagrammer’s point of view, is that this is one of those books about books. The premise of Bachelor Bros B & B is that everyone who comes to stay is an avid reader, coming for some peace and quiet and an escape from their hectic lives. And the book itself provides just that. It has some solemn moments, where characters contemplate life and death and so on, but it’s mostly a lighthearted, bookish gem, from its snippets of poetry to the book lists that appear every few chapters, like “Virgil’s List of Books for When You’re Feeling Low” or “Hector’s List of Favourite Authors for the Bath.” If you like eggcups, bassoons, or smart-mouthed parrots, then this may be the book for you. πŸ“š Could I get some backup from anyone else who likes this book? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? πŸ“š πŸ› πŸ₯ž #bookmaschallenge2018 Beverage/Starbucks Mug #dickensdecember Light/light reading, or swipe to see my very green attempt at fairy lighting. Ah, December! My favorite month! I’ll be featuring some of these books and stories individually over the next few weeks, interspersed with non-holiday posts, because there are a few authors that I’ve just been aching to discuss regardless of theme. Until then, here’s a smattering of my holiday book collection. See any favorites? I don’t normally post twice in 24 hours (or it may even be three if I post tonight). Apologies if I’m overwhelming your Insta, but I had to get my post in early for LM Montgomery’s birthday! Christopher Columbus! How did I not know that today is Louisa May Alcott’s birthday? But I’m jumping on the Bookstagram bandwagon for this one, because I have a deep, abiding fondness for this book, and most especially for Jo March. Thank you, Jo and Miss Alcott, for showing the world a woman writer at work (especially when it feels like genius fizzles and sputters more often than it burns). ✍️ Any other depictions of writers that I should know? Oh my. I’ve been mostly off-Insta for a week, and while it’s been lovely having family time, and adventure time, and extra time with my husband, I’ve missed this place. And I had a new post all ready to go, and then I learned something truly awful about the author, and I just didn’t feel comfortable posting it after all. πŸ“š Then I found this pic that I meant to post AGES ago, of my favorite scene from LuLu the Broadway Mouse. I liked some things about this book better than others (loved the musical theater references, for example), but my favorite, favorite thing was this feeling that we, as dreamers, need to stick together. And to stick to our dreams. The idea of promoting this book makes me feel (forgive the pun) rather warm and fuzzy. 🐭 Mouse sculpture by Karen Dorweiler of Song and Branch. Since it’s U.S. Thanksgiving, here’s a book that I’m thankful exists: Wind in the Willows. So soothing. Perfect when you just feel like messing about with books. Simply messing. 😜 πŸ“š Thankful to have spent the day with family. Thankful to be quiet at home with my Hon and Fi now. Thankful my pies turned out. Thankful for the upcoming buddy read of A Christmas Carol (also shown here). Thankful for Bookstagram and Muppets at the end of the day (watching Turkey Hollow. Enjoy your beets). When I saw the #novembermood18 prompt for Book to Movie, I immediately thought of Practical Magic. I’m picky about book adaptations —I almost always like the version in my mind best— but this is one where, even though they’re very different, I’m charmed by both. πŸ“š The first version of this pic didn’t have Fi in it, but he was rather insistent on being included. Anyone else have a “MY photo” feline? Or canine? 🐈 It’s Thanksgiving Eve here in the U.S. and I’m curled up cozy for the night, pie plates staged in the kitchen for early morning baking. When I thought about my favorite fictional family, I considered the Marches. But it’s really mostly Jo for me, and I still haven’t forgiven Amy for you-know-what! (Well, actually two you-know-whats). Then I thought about the Weasleys. They’re still a fave, but when push came to shove, I had to go with the Penderwicks. Each one has such a distinct personality, yet they all have something particularly Penderwicky about them. And the bond amongst them is heartwarming. They remind me of all the best things about my own family. So, favorite fictional family: The Penderwicks! πŸ“š What about you? πŸ“š #bookstahygge suggested the prompt πŸ“š #thependerwicks #jeannebirdsall #middlegradebooks #bookworm #bibliophile #instareads #books #book #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #bookstagrammer #readersofinstagram #readinglife #writerlife #writersofinstagram #writerslife #writer #writersofinsta #writersofig #readersofig #booknerd #coverlove #booksbooksbooks #bookish #igbooks #igreads
As a reader, do you ever find that you remember a quote —exactly or approximately— but you can’t remember where you read it? πŸ“š #igwritersnov asked what our writer’s motto is. Mine is “the only person you are in competition with is the person you know you can become.” Trouble is, I’m not sure if I’m getting the quote exact (grammatical error and all) and I’m not certain where I read it...but I’m pretty sure it’s from Martha Graham. Even if I’m wrong, Martha Graham is amazing and that quote inspires me to keep pushing, to keep dreaming, to keep dancing with my own imagination. ✍️ Mood lighting for #bookstahygge πŸ“š #fairylights for #bookqueensnov18 πŸ“š #marthagraham #bloodmemory #bookworm #bibliophile #instareads #books #book #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #bookstagrammer #readersofinstagram #readinglife #writerlife #writersofinstagram #writerslife #writer #writersofinsta #writersofig #readersofig #booknerd #coverlove #booksbooksbooks #bookish #igbooks #igreads
Do you ever feel like stories exceed their books? And all their adaptations? That’s how Peter Pan is for me. I never quite took to the Disney movie, because the mermaids in my dreams were sweet and not snotty, and even when very young, I knew tribal people didn’t say “ugh” instead of speaking. And the book Peter was more self-centered than I’d hoped. But I’ve never forgotten the magic of that boy who could fly, and the land of mermaids and pirates where you could save a fairy by clapping your hands. And I’ve always wanted a Saint Bernard for a nanny...though none could have done better than the Lhasa Apso that watched over me throughout my childhood, companion and protector. (In the book it’s a Newfoundland, but I digress). Despite all limitations, despite all odds, the core of the story survives. That sense of wonder and believing is still with me. πŸ“š I know how to sew, Peter. 🎢🎡”Getting to know ME, getting to know all about ME...”🎡🎢 One more day of introduction-type stuff and then it’s back to the books (in more ways than one). Here are a few bookish prompts suggested by @1000lives_and_severalcupsoftea , a few inspired by @bookishbeerishcatish , and a couple of writerly prompts for good measure. Here we go! πŸ“š Favorite Books? Look at my posts! Most of them are there already: Anne of the Island, The Hobbit, Prodigal Summer, almost anything by Willa Cather or Zora Neale Hurston, and many more. Last Book Read? Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman Good? Yes! Had issues with a couple of parts, but her writing is spectacular. Currently reading? The Girl Who Wrote in Silk by Kelli Estes Favorite Genre? Middle Grade Fantasy (which is also what I write) Physical books, ebooks, or audiobooks? Physical! Occasionally an audio in the car of something I’ve already read. Shelf organization? Not really. πŸ˜„ By genre most of the time. Fun fact: I can’t shelve authors next to each other that wouldn’t have liked each other in life. I have the hardest time with Hemingway. He’s lucky to have Fitzgerald. How often do you read? A couple of hours at a time a few days a week. How often do you write? When I’m in the zone, every morning, up to ten days in a row before I need a day off, then back in again. When I’m not in the zone, I’m trying to get there. Where do you write? Most often on the couch, sometimes at my desk. Do you have a work in progress (WIP)? Yes, three! One’s about aliens, one’s about aviators, and one’s a manor house mystery with a twist. A twystery? Do you have an agent? Yes. I’d tag her, but she’s super busy. *waves* Is your fiction traditionally published? Working on it! Favorite Harry Potter: Azkaban. Or Half-Blood Prince. Character that I Hope Survives in Game if Thrones: Any of the direwolves. Then Bran. Then Arya. (Yes, in Man vs Nature plots, I tend to
I realized recently that I’ve never properly introduced myself on Instagram/Bookstagram. Until now! πŸ“š Hi All! I’m Trinna (pronounced with a short i, like din or spin). Here are the vital stats: Married, no children. Devoted aunt. Former teacher. Aspiring writer. Book geek for as long as I can remember. More hobbies and interests than I can count (though I tend to rotate them). They include, but aren’t limited to, swimming, dance, knitting, crochet, embroidery, digital photo collage, watching classic films, travelling, and baking. I’m just learning how to cook and I collect everything under the sun, from beach glass to Beastlies. Love nature and animals of all sorts. I’m into many fandoms: Harry Potter, Anne of Green Gables, Star Wars, Hobbit/LotR, and more, more, more! My current writing projects are middle grade (aka upper elementary school age) sci-fi/fantasies. Still reading? Yay! Here’s a bit more. πŸ‘œ If you follow me, you may have noticed that I usually don’t post pics of myself. I don’t have two heads or anything...I just think the Internet is one of the rare places on this planet where we can get to know one another without depending on appearances, so I’m keeping it that way for now. Why the R2D2 purse? Because I carry it at conferences and workshops. If you’ve met me, then you’ll probably remember the purse...and you’ll know it’s me when you get here! πŸ“š STILL still reading? I was going to answer a series of prompts about books, but this already feels long! Maybe I’ll do those tomorrow. What’s a particularly interesting or revealing prompt/question that I should make sure to answer? Please suggest! Thanks in advance! πŸ“š #bookworm #bibliophile #instareads #books #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #readersofinstagram #readinglife #writerlife #writerslife #writer #writersofinstagram #writersofinsta #writersofig #readersofig #booknerd #booksbooksbooks #bookish #igbooks #igreads
