⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍New Orleans ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I had a rockin’ time with my family and friends at the Rock n Rock New Orleans Half Marathon. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, yummier food, or bigger smiles. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This was my first half marathon that could actually run- no injuries, no sickness. I had missed out on running my last two races due to an untimely leg injury. As I approached the start line with my sisters I was filled with nervous excitement. I had no idea what to expect in terms of my time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I ended up blowing my goal time out of the water. I ran a 1:55 and as I crossed the finish line (with a Prince impersonator) I felt tears threatening my eyes. I hugged my sister and we cried from excitement, pride, and exhaustion. Thank you, New Orleans. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For anybody else out there in training mode: this is your time. Take it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Crypt Lake ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It has been foggy down in New Orleans for a few days... reminded me of when we hiked Crypt Lake in Canada. Foggy days aren’t all bad. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: You can add some extra mileage to the hike by checking out Hell-Roaring Falls.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Trail to Scenic Point Two Medicine ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We were almost to the “summit” of Scenic Point when we came across this bighorn sheep. It watched us carefully then permitted us to continue on through. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: Scenic Point has an elevation gain of 2,640 feet.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍East facing wall of the Orpheum Theater ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Forever stopping to admire murals... this one is called”The Sound of Flight” and was done by The Mural Mice and Sky Black. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: This is the largest mural in Arizona, coming in at 4,500 square feet.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Trail to Iceberg Lake Glacier National Park ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Blue flowers always remind me of my little sister 😊 So when I saw these lining the trail I had to stop and snap a picture! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: These flowers are alpine forget-me-nots which bloom from April until August.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Running Eagle Falls Two Medicine ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Waterfalls never cease to amaze me. The first one I ever encountered was the Alluvial Fan in RMNP. My sisters and I would scramble up the rocks around it for hours with the ever-present threat of a loose boulder fatally ending our fun. Nature has more power than a lot of us realize. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: During the cold months of the winter some mountaineers will practice their skills by hiking frozen waterfalls.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Fort Myers, Florida ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So my computer finally bit the dust. I want to find a new one so I can start editing photos and things like that. Anybody else hate technology shopping or is it just me?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍South Beach Miami, Florida ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I took a trip to Florida over the weekend and it was a vacation of “firsts”. First time seeing the ocean, first time seeing a gator, first time going to Miami... the list goes on. I was amazed at the power and resilience of the ocean. Now I understand why sailors fall in love. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: Miami is the only major city in the US that was founded by a woman (Julia Tuttle).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Gardening ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I want 2019 to be full of flowers, so now I’ve got to plant the seeds. I have a lot of cool stuff in the works currently (no evil eye). I hope y’all do too! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: Plants can communicate with one another through their roots!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Trail to Iceberg Lake Glacier National Park ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This was one of my favorite hikes because I completed it with my family and close friends. The scenery is always great, but the people are what make a hike amazing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: This trail closed mid-summer due to bear activity! Glad we were able to hike it before that happened 🐻
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Grand Prismatic hot spring Midway Geyser Basin ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My favorite selfie from 2018 ☺️ The journey to self confidence and self love has been long and definitely non-linear. There are still days when I wish I was invisible. But one bad day doesn’t equate to not making progress. Here’s to continuing to grow in 2019! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: The Grand Prismatic hot spring has rings of colors ranging from orange to blue due to bacteria that has adapted to the temperature and the acidic solution.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Saylorville Lake Des Moines River ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m back in the swampy south but ironically this picture was taken in the Midwest. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: Saylorville Lake has prevented an estimated $181,932,300 from flood damages since its construction in 1977.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Lullwater Preserve Emory’s campus ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Headed back to Atlanta soon. I’m not really looking forward to all the noise and the rush of city life. Lullwater Preserve is one of my favorite places in the city because it’s a nice change of scenery from the rest of Atlanta. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: The President of Emory University lives on a hill in the preserve.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍The trail to the Natural Bridge Bridge Bay Marina ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That moment when you don’t notice the 1000 pound bison walking right at you 🤦🏻‍♀️ There was a big group of hikers in front of me that moved off the trail and I didn’t know why until I saw this guy. He eyed us down but then decided to keep walking. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: It is recommended to stay at least 75 feet away from bison. They can charge up to 40 mph so give them enough room.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Rural Iowa ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Happy New Year everyone! Here’s to a fantastic 2019! To everyone making resolutions, set SMART goals. Your goals should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time bound. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Goals like “exercise more” or “read more” or “eat healthy” are bound to fail. Instead, use the SMART method to make 2019 successful! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: The ball in NYC did not drop in 1942 and 1943 due to light restrictions from WWII. Besides those two years the ball has descended every year since 1907!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Former rock quarry ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have spent most of my life in Iowa so I figured I had seen everything already. But then, one of my close friends showed me an old rock quarry in the middle of nowhere. It turned out to be an awesome adventure! Swipe for a cute sister picture. 👯‍♀️💙 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: Quarries have been used as a way to retrieve stone out of the ground for thousands of years.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍Grandma’s garden ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A lot of my first interactions with nature were in my grandma’s garden. She always had a green thumb. Maybe one day I’ll figure out how to not kill a plant within one week. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: Flowers first showed up around 140 million years ago. Before that it was mostly cone bearing trees and cones.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌎📍 Yellowstone Lake The back of Yellowstone Hotel ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My friend and I wanted to go down to the lake to get a better look at the water. She had her nice Canon camera with her as we tried to gracefully tumble down a large sandy wall. She ended up looking like Rafiki holding baby Simba while half running- half sliding to the lake. 😂😂😂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: Yellowstone has 110 miles of shoreline. (I’ve never been to the ocean so it’s the biggest body of water I’ve ever seen.)
