Jack wants this to be the BEST Christmas ever and in his zeal to trim his family’s tree in the grandest way possible, he breaks an ornament. It’s just any ornament. It’s a very special (irreplaceable) family heirloom. While picking up the pieces of the broken ornament, a quirky magical creature named Tinsel appears. She deftly grants Jack’s wishes for the best, most over-the-top Christmas ever. Jack revels in the otherworldly winter wonderland that’s suddenly sprung up in his living room but still lingering is the feeling that he needs to somehow fix his mother’s broken ornament. Tinsel can’t fix the problem, but she does nudge Jack toward a solution in her magical way. Tony DiTerlizzi’s art shines in this heartfelt story for the holiday season. . The Broken Ornament was written and illustrated by Tony DiTerlizzi (@diterlizzi) and published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers (@simonkids).
"Waiting" by Kevin Henkes is such a gentle, heartwarming book on the notion of waiting. The book follows five charming little characters who are toys on a windowsill, each patiently waiting for something different to happen. The toys are portrayed in soft pastel colours that make them absolutely adorable. This is a sweet little book to share with your child as a bedtime story.⠀ . #kidsbookstagram#picturebook#abookaday⠀ #childrensbook#kevinhenkes#bookstagrammer

Do your kids wake up to the smell of a big breakfast on Christmas morning? The last few years we started doing our Christmas morning a little different. The big gift that Santa leaves is unwrapped and waiting to be played with. We sit down with the kids and watch them open their stocking stuffers and see their excitement about what Santa left for them. Then they sit and play with those new gifts while Marc and I make breakfast. Then we all eat. After we eat we head back to the family room and finish unwrapping the rest of the gifts under the Christmas tree. I love how this slows us down a little and makes the morning of excitement last a little longer. . . Sidenote: My kids were thrilled with these EASY Rudolph pancakes I made for dinner a few days ago. Pair them with a book about Rudolph and your have yourself a fun Book Snack. Also, the book featured in the second picture is NOT a favorite. I am on the hunt for a good Rudolph book.
Book Review from the Bayou: Hey 👋! Am I the only one who gets excited when they see hay bales lined up in a field? My grandfather lives on 20 acres of land in the country and so hay bales were frequent on his property when I was a kid. He did not have animals to feed the hay to, so most of the time it just sat in rows and my brother, cousins and I would play hide and seek behind them. Sometimes he would sell it to people who had farm animals🐄🐎🐐. I knew that there was a special tool attached to a tractor called a baler, but until I read Hey, Hey, Hay by Christy Mihaly, I did not know there were other tools involved or what different steps in making hay were called. If you are looking for a book for a little farm loving 🚜 kid in your life or have a kid who asks questions❓like “why?” or “how?” this book would be a fun read for both! Hey, Hey, Hay is a rhyming taletold from a little girl’s account of how she and her mother harvested hay 🚜during the summer to keep for the horses 🐴 in the Winter. The story starts with this rhyme, “On a cold and wintry ❄️day, I love to break out bales of hay. The hay smells fresh, like summer sun🌞. I feed my horses 🐴, one by one. “ I love any rhyming book that talks about feeding or moving animals one by one, because it gives the reader a visual of more than one animal, even if you only see one in the picture. This book is a cool book to read whether you are experiencing Winter ❄️ or Summer 🌞right now because both seasons are presented. This book includes a glossary of hay words and a recipe for a cold drink in the Summer 🌞time called Switchel that is mentioned in the story. This month’s theme @kidlitpicks is all about rhyming books and this is one of my recommendations! P.S. The other photos are some of my encounters with hay, from Summer and up to today! #bookreviewfromthebayou📚🐊 #heyheyhay #ataleofbalesandthemachinesthatmakethem #christymihaly#joecepeda

One of my favourite parts of our book advent is revisiting family favourites and hearing the kids comment on them as if they have been reunited with old friends. We read many of the same books for our advent each year and the kids (and I) always get excited. I would have to say it is my most treasured family Christmas tradition. * * Do you have a treasured family tradition at Christmas time? * * Our day 11 book advent is The Naughtiest Reindeer by Nicki Greenberg and published by @allenandunwin . * * Ruby is Rudolf’s sister and she is the naughtiest reindeer in the North Pole and it’s not long before she is creating all kinds of mischief for Santa. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * #thenaughtiestreindeer#bookadvent#christmasbookstagram#christmasbook#kidsbookadvent

This wordless picture book by Alison Jay is a great one for all ages, with beautiful illustrations on every page. "Bee & Me" is a delightful book about the friendship between a girl and a bee. One day, a bee flew in through an apartment window and was trapped by a frightened little girl. But over time, their friendship grew as the girl began to care for the bee. It is a fantastic piece that introduces kids to the importance of bees in our natural world. . #picturebook#wordlesspicturebook#kidsbookstagram#childrensbook#alisonjay#kidlitpicks
📚 Christmas books 📚 We do a book advent, with a daily activity (which we have been going slowly slowly with...). I love that our Christmas books are away all year, and come out for December. Each morning it’s so lovely to sit and snuggle (about the only time he sits still!) with my tea and his milk and see which book has arrived overnight. Last year it was great for his present unwrapping skills too! We don’t quite have 25-I should be able to pick up a few new ones after Christmas, but either way it’s nice to put in a few forgotten books from the shelves.
What is it about mice that make them the perfect protagonists for a Christmas story? Here are three lovely stories about mice at Christmas. 1) Merry Christmas Mr. Mouse is the heartwarming tale of a mouse husband, wife, and their seventeen children moving indoors for the first time, discovering Christmas, and having their own first celebration. This sweet story is from the creators of the Snowmen at Night series, Caralyn and Mark Buehner. 2) Mortimer’s Christmas Manger is by Karma Wilson (@karmawilsonbooks) and illustrated by Jane Chapman (@chapmanandwarnes), the dynamic duo behind the beloved Bear books. This gently funny story tells the tale of a mouse who attempts to make his bed in a tiny manger, but he keeps getting moved out in favor of a small doll baby. Finally Mortimer learns just who the manger’s occupant represents and why he’s there, and he learns how to share. 3) Mousekin’s Christmas Eve by Edna Miller continues the story of Mousekin, a small whitefoot mouse. In this story, Mousekin has moved from his woodland home to indoors. I honestly wasn’t sure if I missed some stories between Mouskin’s Thanksgiving and this to explain that move, but there it was. I’m wondering if the next logical book was really Mouskin’s Frosty Friend, which our library doesn’t have. Mousekin’s indoor house is suddenly deserted by its human occupants, so he goes in search of another. There he finds a house in full Christmas celebration mode. Do you have a favorite mouse Christmas book? Any other creatures you see over and over in your Christmas books? Any idea why mice are popular for Christmas stories? . . . . #bookstagram#bookgram#igbooks#booklove#kidsbookstagram#yeskidsbookstagram#kidlit#childrensbooks#childrensliterature#kidsbooks#raisingreaders#readaloud#readaloudrevival#littlebookworm#merrychristmasmrmouse#mortimerschristmasmanger#mousekin#ednamiller#karmawilson#janechapman#caralynbuehner#markbuehner

Running a bit late with the bedtime routine tonight but we still managed to squeeze in a good reading of The Amazing Adventures of Aya in Pete in Paris. I usually like to leave the camera out of our mummy/son time, but I had to take a photo of this moment I asked Ethan what Aya was doing. He gasped and went ‘OH NOOO!!!’. She was only yawning 😂 and so it’s time for bed. What’s your favourite story to read at bed time? (Aya and Pete is available to purchase on our website and in store at @hubandculture)

”We can't always be there to protect our kids from peer pressure, but we can arm them with the power to think for themselves! Let them know it's okay to be different! Just be yourself, no matter what others around you are doing! Own it! Kale sets a great example when it comes to making your own decisions in this straight-forward kids book. He likes animals and super capes and it doesn't matter that his friends are more into construction trucks and freight trains. He knows what he likes and is great at making his own decisions.” Making the little decisions for yourself as a kid leads to being able to make the big decisions for yourself as adult. Perhaps if we never lose who we are as kids we won't have to spend so much time trying to find ourselves as adults. Kids are under so much pressure at school to fit in that they often put their own likes and dislikes on the back burner in order to be like everyone else. Read this book to your little ones before they head off to school and they will see how it's okay to be different! The Think For Myself Series will encourage your kids to know who they are and be confident in themselves. Send your kids the message that it's cool to be unique and always give them the freedom to think for themselves!

Read @writesinla 's review below to see why this book encourages young readers to #standupforhumanrights 👇🏼 ・・・ PEACE AND ME by Ali Winter and Mickaël El Fathi starts with a history of Alfred Nobel and the prize he devised in his will to offset the way his invention—dynamite—had become a weapon of war: money given each year “to the person who had achieved something of greatest benefit to [humankind].” The book highlights twelve Nobel Peace Prize winners including Malala Yousafzai, Nelson Mandela, Wangari Maathai, Martin Luther King Jr., Jane Addams, Desmond Tutu, Rigoberta Menchú Tum, Shirin Ebadi, and more. A vibrant, rich, textured portrait accompanies each bio and the book closes with thoughts about what Peace is and a question to the reader. “What does Peace mean to you?” A book to inspire acts of peace and justice in troubled times. . . . There's a reason why your child wants to read the same book again and again 📚📚📚 Reading with your child at home part 5: We are still on Peppa Pig books 🤦♀️ in fact the same one! 🐽🤪 Last night she spent about 20 minutes looking through her books case, pondering, flicking though and then going 'Not today!'. 🤨 This is what I was handed.. again! It has got me thinking again though how frustrating but important this stage is. Click on my bio of a link to a great article explaining why.
My Christmas tree aint stand a chance with my toddler on the loose, like oranges in a blender my poor Christmas tree was juice. The ornaments were shattered as he flung them through the air, even after yelling at him, "Mr. don't you dare!" One by one they met their fate, there was no holding back. Then he scurried towards the choo choo train, and tore it off the tracks. "Daddy look at me" he said, while ripping off a wheel. The destruction from his tiny hands were brutally surreal. So if you have a toddler, then you better guard the tree, or you'll find yourself in horror, traumatized like me. Poem by Danual Berkley
"After The Fall" by Dan Santat is one of my favourite picks. This is an extension of the story about Humpty Dumpty, who (as we all know) fell off the wall. After his fall, Humpty Dumpty was afraid of heights, too frightened to climb up a ladder, even if it meant missing out on his favourite things. How would he conquer his fear and get back up again? . This is a great story that teaches kids a valuable ⠀ lesson of getting back on your feet after a failure, but in a fun and humorous way. . #kidsbookrecommendation#kidsbookswelove#childrensbook

ALL THROUGH THE YEAR 🌳 Mother’s Day in May, Easter with the chill of Autumn and Christmas in the heat, with afternoon thunder storms to cool the earth instead of snow. That’s life here in Australia. With scrumptious illustrations by @_annawalker_ and rhythmic poetry by @janiegodwin, you’d be hard pressed to find a more moving and gentle exploration of the year. It’s 1912 in the Lower East Side of New York City and we join the quintet of “all of a kind” sisters as dubbed by their parents—Ella, Henny, Sarah, Charlotte and Gertie—as they prepare for the first night of Hanukkah. Latkes and applesauce are on their mind as they peel, grate and chop. Then come sprinkling, shaking and stirring. Gertie, the littlest, wants to help with all of it, but unfortunately she’s just too young. Frustration and stomping boots ensue. But Papa cleverly thinks of something very, very important that Gertie is old enough to help with, for the first time ever. A special story that celebrates the beauty of family and meaningful traditions. “The latkes taste of history and freedom, of love and crispy potato.” . All-of-a-Kind Family Hanukkah is based on Sydney Taylor’s books and was written by Emily Jenkins (@elockhartbooks), illustrated by Paul O. Zelinksky (@paulozelinsky) and published by Schwartz & Wade (@randomhousekids). A glossary, sources and notes from the author and illustrator are included in the back matter.

Thank you to @gailshepherdauthor for sharing this book. All opinions are my own. I’ll be sharing this book with @kidlitexchange soon. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Lyndie has a very happy life. She loves history, her dog, the library and her best friend, Dawn. She lives in a perfect white cottage with her mom and dad and they go on lots of adventures together researching the history that surrounds their small town of Love Forge TN in 1985. But this all suddenly changes when her daddy loses his job. They quickly sell their house, move in with grandpa and her very strict grandmother, Lady, and leave her beloved library and favorite librarian behind. Instead, Lyndie is greeted by Lady with so many rules and schedules that Lyndie’s head is spinning. It’s all because Lady is determined to mold Lyndie into a nice southern girl and to make sure she follows the most important family rule: keeping quiet about family’s secrets. As the days go by, it turns out there are lots of secrets to keep. Especially about her daddy who keeps disappearing for days at a time, and about her mom who only emerges from her room to go to work. Lyndie has so many questions and yet no one is giving her any answers. She senses Daddy’s time in Vietnam might have something to do with what’s happening now, but she’s not sure. All she knows for sure, is that she feels very alone and very scared. ✨This story is going to stay in my heart for a very long time. I’ll remember Lyndie for her resourcefulness and her kindness. I’ll remember her determination to help her next door neighbor, the juvenile delinquent boy, D.B, reunite with his beloved foster mom. And I’ll remember D.B. I’ll remember his sense of humor, his positivity and his kind and thoughtful manner toward those around him, even though he has suffered so much during his first 12 years of life. I’ll remember Dawn’s love and kindness as she does her best to save the world, one long scarf at a time. I’ll remember
MY LITTLE GIFTS Having the rare privilege to celebrate both year end birthdays and Christmas with the family this year, it's got me thinking about how I want the kids to perceive these special days as they grow older. . Are birthdays and Christmas only about physical presents? What else can we do to make our kids feel special? And what ways can THEY give to others who are having their special days? . Because gifts can be more than than just toys and books (which I already buy more than enough of throughout the year anyway!! 😒). . In this title by Jo Witek (same author as In My Heart), gifts can also be handmade, be just a smile, or a series of hugs and kisses. We can share the gift of knowledge, and be gifted with kind words too. . Gifts come in lots of forms and it only depends on how you see them. I want the kids to find joy in little things that truly matter to them, to appreciate people's love, generosity and thoughtfulness in various gestures, as well as to be able to share these with others. . This book makes it so easy for young ones to understand the value of giving, receiving and sharing gifts. The playful illustrations are spread big across the pages, accompanied with flaps to engage little hands with suspense. . Most importantly, the message is clear: "It does not matter if a gift is big or small, fancy or plain, only that it comes from the heart." 💗 . Words: Jo Witek | Illustrations: Christine Roussey

I’ve been ensconced at home with a horrible foggy cold the past couple of days—and they’ve been slow, grainy rainy days to boot—but I just wanted to pop on here and share this glorious new illustrated edition of a beloved Christmas carol. Are you looking for some picture books to add to your shopping list? I just published a post describing my favorites from 2018! Many of them have the themes of kindness, empathy and window and mirrors. I hope you find some to share with the children in your lives! Link is in my profile. 😊Here’s my review of one of my favorites, The Worry Box, a book you won’t want to miss. #theworrybox By Suzanne Chien Illustrated by Sean Julian Published by Tiger Tales @tigertalesbooks Murray Bear is afraid to go to the waterfall with his sister, Molly. What if it’s too loud? What if it’s too big? Then Molly shares a secret with him. She has a worry box and whenever she is scared or worried about something, she writes it down and puts her worries in the box. Her worry doesn’t go away, but it doesn’t stop her from having fun. (I’m so glad the story stresses that the worry doesn’t disappear, but rather just become bearable.) When Murray tries her technique, it works! Sure enough, the waterfall turns out to be both big and loud, but also beautiful and so much fun! This is such a great book to share with kids of all ages, and even adults! We all have worries that prevent us from enjoying our lives. I know I do! This books offers us a strategy for dealing with those worries. Just as Molly advises Murray, I once had a wise friend suggest that the worries I was finding unbearable needed to be put into a box on the shelf. And you know what? It helped then, and it still helps me now. I want to give children the power to deal with their worries, big or small, and this book does exactly that! I strongly recommend that it be a part of both your home and classroom libraries so that it’s there to curl up and share whenever a need arises.

It’s been a while but I’m excited to share that a brand new Littlest Book Corner Storytime episode is up on YouTube (link in bio)! This time it is the story of The Woogilyboo and the Hot Lava. This is such a fun book by @brysonsbooks , my son is absolutely obsessed with it! It’s completely random but really entertaining for little readers. Fun fact: Bryson wrote this with his young son! Which is probably what makes it so much fun for little ones as it has all the silliness that keeps kids engaged and having fun. Another awesome fact about Brysons Books is that a portion of their profits are donated to charity!! You’ll find the link to their website in the description of the YouTube video. Go check them out 📚
So excited that we now have amazing representative colouring sets in stock! Designed by @nyha_graphics, they come in 3 varieties and would make an amazing gift/stocking filling this Christmas. My son grabbed one as soon as he saw it coming out of the box! Don’t forget, the last date for all Christmas orders is 15th December.
Do your kids go out to recess when the temperature reaches 0 degrees? When we lived in South Dakota the kids would go out to recess as long as the temperature was above 0 degrees. It wasn’t until it hit -1 that they would call recess off. 😱 And my kids walked to school in full snow gear each day (with only their eyes showing 😂). They looked so funny waddling down the street to school. So, when the kids get kept in from recess when the temperture dips just under 40 degrees, here in Texas, I just have to smile. . .
