Yesterday we launched a new campaign as part of our continual efforts to write women into architectural history, but this time we’re doing it via video. We’re seeking 1 minute videos about women architects–these are women who were educated as architects, or educate others to become architects; women from wide and diverse practices, demonstrating the myriad ways women trained as architects have participated and continue to participate in the built environment and design related fields. This project seeks to demonstrate that women have been vital to the practice of architecture for decades, while radically under recognized. Custom built-in wall unit in satin and high gloss white lacquer designed for #manhattan#uppereastside#apartment#renovation by #evajensendesign. . Now it’s coming together… swipe to see how. . . The unit extends the entire end wall of the #familyroom and incorporates the wall panel component used throughout the residence. “Superimposed” on the paneling backdrop are a series of lower cantilevered drawers in an asymmetrical design. The TV screen with sound bar is mounted above. Floating shelves with a detailed edge showcase sculptural objects. The unit provides a tailored wall composition for the Family room. The furnishings are selected and arranged to create an atmosphere of casual comfort where the family can commune and relax. . The white lacquer panel was introduced as a finish and proportional scale element serving to generate luminance and to create interior continuity. Throughout the apartment from East to West the panel is applied in different rooms taking on function as wall panel, closet door and room divider. . On this freezing windy New York winter‘s day we are definitely in the mood to #cozyup and watch a great movie. This family room is a great place to do that! . Stay Warm! . . The Egg chair by #arnejacobsen @fritzhansen provides a sculptural freestanding element, and is flanked by @louispoulsen floor lamp. The furnishing arrangement is anchored on a @kasthall rug. #krenitbowls placed on wall unit shelving. Smart flatscreen TV by @sony. L-shaped Charles Sofa @bebitalia with decorative pillows in @loropianaofficial fabric. Burt Wayne had had a career in fashion before becoming an interior designer. As we sat in his sprawling apartment on Central Park West, surrounded by smokey mirrors and leopard-print carpets, dreaming up our client’s kitchen, Burt told me stories about working with Anne Klein, whom he greatly admired. ‘Annie’, as he affectionately called her, had full-length upper-cabinet pulls in her very own kitchen. They were stunning, mused Burt. Made of brass, wonderfully exuberant, and as tall as the doors themselves. After a long theatrical pause, he finally let on that they were, in fact, repurposed coffin handles. Couldn’t we find some for our client? Well, I thought, Annie had already ‘done’ coffin handles. Surely there was something else we could use which would produce a similar effect, and do so without any morbid associations? After a little searching, I hit on the solution; stainless steel boat hardware. Built for harsh marine environments, made like precision-machinery, durable, and entirely customizable from a comprehensive kit of catalog parts. Shackles, turnbuckles, tie-downs, rods, eye hooks, stanchions and spring clips... You name it. Burt was delighted; the solution was clever, made to last, and sleek as a speedboat. Happy birthday, Julia Morgan 🎂 🎉🎈🍾🎁 "Never turn down a job because you think it's too small; you don't know where it can lead." --Julia Morgan (1872-1957) America's first truly independent female architect, left a legacy of over 700 buildings, many of which are now designated landmarks, in cities throughout California, as well as in Hawaii, Utah, and Illinois (including the famous Hearst Castle.)
I want to start this Monday with a palette of colors that represents the nuances of nature, facing this cold winter with the warm shades of desert sand. The Sahara desert, for example, is multicolored, not only for the sand but also for the many colors of the rocks.
"Go somewhere with a great culture, where there’s opportunity to move. Go to a firm where people know your name and where the volume of work that gets built ensures you have greater opportunity to learn." Congratulations to Nicola Eason, a vital member of the Rothelowman family and our newest Associate. Want to learn about Nicola's ascension in our studio? Thank you @txarchitects for the emerging practices feature this month! Especially proud to be positioned between two other @ricearch affiliated firms I admire - doing amazing work - @la_n_d and @schaumshieh. Once the artists represented nature because this was their source of inspiration. the paintings became the place in which to enclose the magic and the art of nature itself. Today I wonder if we still have so much respect for what still gives us to breathe.
Talking to all of you and checking out your amazing feeds is really the best part of creating this company! Excited to feature our friend Farah (@renewablefarah) - she is an Architect and Building Energy Code official based in New York City. Here she is in Iceland, checking out Iceland's Blue Lagoon, a site that has incorporated energy efficiency via geothermal power! Pictured in the background is Svartsengi Power Plant, whose waste heat is utilized for the popular spa. Her eco-travels have taken her to many sustainably designed projects. Check out her travel blog on: www.farahnazahmad.com. #womeninarchitecture
Last night, #wiavan hosted our “What Women Want Workplace Workshop”. It was a visioning session where we explored how a workplace can support women in the architecture & design industry. The intent of this workshop was to gather input from women working in architecture and related fields (construction, engineering, interior design, industrial design, landscape architecture etc.) in #vancouver to create an overview of both the barriers we face and assets we seek. Our investigation into the modern design workplace: what makes it work for women, and what doesn’t? is part of a larger initiative to catalogue women’s workplace values and publish a guiding document on how workplaces can support women entering and remaining in architectural fields. If you didn’t get a chance to participate in the workshop, engage with us through our channels! We’d love to hear what you think. (All contributions will remain anonymous). Also, a huge thank you to @inter_lite our venue sponsor for this beautiful new space @spacesworks #gastown!
