Our fourth artist for this year's #5womenartists challenge is sculptor Meredith Bergmann. She was granted the commission for the first monument in Central Park with real women (🔗 in bio). Of the 23 sculptures of historical figures, not one honors a woman—until now.⠀ ⠀ The monument will show Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony (abolitionists, suffragists, and women’s rights pioneers). Here you see the maquette for the approved monument scheduled to be unveiled in 2020.⠀ ⠀ Of her design, Ms. Bergmann says, "I want to show them young and really in the heyday of their activism, before they were widely recognized. There will be a scroll descending from the speech that the two women are working on that has quotations from 25 other women representing the whole spectrum of suffrage activity — the African American women, there’s a Chinese-American woman, a Latina woman — ending with the 19th Amendment in 1920 and the box that says “vote.” You’ll see the history coming towards you– and now it’s your turn."⠀ ⠀ Ms. Bergmann studied here at the Art Students League with anatomist Robert Beverly Hale and sculptor Sidney Simon in the 1970s.⠀ ⠀ #ArtMakers #createart#57thstreet#artschool#balanceforbetter #monumentalwomen⠀

#woodcut#xilogravura#linocut#printmaking#jewelrydesign#makersgonnamake#womanartist
Some of the materials I use require a spray-on varnish. I prefer not to use this varnish because it’s toxic and needs to be done outside with a mask. And it needs to be done when it’s warm. But finally we had a 16°C day after -40°C and I was able to varnish my paintings. 🐾👏🏽 . I have a show coming up at the end of this month, and another one mid April, so we’ll see some of these paintings there! 😊🌼😎
