Part 2 of 2: “How do i not have an emotion?” Asked a client recently... they had become present to how emotion regularly overwhelmed them; how it led to creating meaning out of situations. I feel this is a holy grail question of mental health! In my own journey, I have found it to be impossible to live void of emotion. This does not mean we cannot be numb from them (a chunk of my life was spent disconnected!) nor are we incapable of experiencing them differently. But yes... I experience emotion to always be around. Having researched into the science of this, I love reading about neurotransmitters; chemical like messengers encoded with “experience” for cells throughout our body to unlock and decipher. I love this concept not only as a presentation of futility to block emotions… but as a demonstration of our potential to change emotion by expanding consciousness of them... it becomes clearer how capable we are to mindfully respond to them. When it comes to emotion I love how some of the Greats speak of them like clouds; the possibility of watching emotion in a way like you might watch clouds in the sky. We notice blue skies are followed by dark and stormy moments. Though we might try, we cannot take hold of clouds. Emotions are similar, we cannot grasp them but merely watch as they change from one form to another. This does not mean there is nothing we can do to support emotional growth and healing. I find it helpful to start with “meaning”. What meaning have I placed on an experience or someone’s words? Life offers countless opportunities to consider our “meaning making” abilities; grasping I am a “meaning maker”… I offer myself the opportunity to release impact of triggers. I remain present without attachment or disconnection. Y’all, I’m such a weird foodie, mom. My kids literally visited Wendy’s for the first time yesterday. Can anyone else relate? 😂🤷🏼♀️ Or am I just that weird? (I mean, I’m ok with being weird just FYI.) . My son’s baseball team is sponsored by Wendy’s and his coach invited them all to get a frosty after they won last night’s game. Our staple fast food type of place is always @chipotle , but Caden really wanted to go connect with his teammates at Wendy’s even though we hadn’t eaten dinner yet. 😒 . Well, here the boys are connecting over frostys and celebrating their win. I will not be googling ingredients of a frosty today. #justsayin 🤦🏽♀️ . Here’s the thing about health, give your body what it needs most of the time so it can rid itself of things it doesn’t need the other part of the time. Connecting with teammates is priceless. Sometimes I get mad that we have to even think about the crap that gets put in our food, but it is what it is and I far want to value connecting with people at times even above what food we consume. I don’t post much about my love life here (for many reasons), but just a late night musing I felt called to share: I feel as if this next chapter of my life will be the most interesting because I am finally, truly and fully learning about what love is — after spending the last years of my life learning and unlearning what toxic love is and how not to perpetuate it. I feel that now I’ve successfully embarked upon the journey of rejecting notions of love that may seem familiar (but are rather dangerous to me), and I can finally begin to see + explore what it means to have + experience authentic love in all of its forms, and I’m excited. Excited to love without expectation. Excited to be loved with appreciation. Excited to know and understand true intimacy. And excited to love without fearing that anything is being taken away from me. —————————————— What does true, authentic love mean to you?
