Growing up happiness was a job Something to push upon others And to maintain with diligence. I had the responsibility To hold a false smile as I was told it was my fault for the anger and shame that consumed my family members. I held all the power yet was powerless. It has taken work. Years. To let go of the toxicity of searching For what cannot be found outside of myself nor in the hands of another. Instead, happiness resides along side the feelings I was told were unimportant and unattributed. It is created not from another's actions But ever present Waiting for me to take ownership and full responsibility. This is a reminder there is nothing stopping you from happiness but yourself.
Back in April I had a session with Ayurvedic consultant @andrearussellayurveda. I dutifully printed all the materials she made for me and then put them in a pile. Under some books. On top of the fridge. (Sorry, Andrea.)⠀ ⠀ About a month ago, partly in response to a big relationship shift (um, that’s fancy talk for “break up”), I pulled everything out and started implementing her suggestions. Now I’m feeling better than before in just about every way. ⠀ ⠀ As Ayurveda gains popularity in the West, products and businesses start to pop up, some very good products and businesses.⠀ ⠀ But, like yoga and meditation, Ayurveda has the potential to empower the individual to live better in their own skin. You can invest in support but ultimately it’s a practice that you must commit to. ⠀ ⠀ The most challenging (and beneficial) aspects of this new way of living are being consistent in my eating and sleeping routines and allowing myself to rest. I feel guilty resting, even when I’m tired. I don’t eat even when I’m hungry. I don’t move even when I’m getting stiff from sitting too long. I’m not really sure where these subtly self-destructive tendencies come from but it’s interesting to notice them. I spent so many years thinking I was crazy, thinking it was me (understandable when you are being told that too!), thinking that I must be a failure for not being able to ‘cope’ with every day life. That I was ‘weak’ because I kept getting depressed. It’s only in the last year, after being diagnosed with PTSD that I realise these were symptoms of my illness, not personal failings. I have worked hard over the last year with my amazing therapist and continue to work on myself personally every day. Each day is a new day, each day is a battle. 💫How do you quantify your WORTH? Is it related to a job that you have, or a status that you’ve acquired? What about the ‘life goals’ you’ve achieved like starting a family or owning a home? . . . 🧘♀️ I think our sense of self worth is attached to something intangible. A deep rooted knowledge that we are worthy of immense happiness, success and love not for any other reason than the fact that we are here. It’s your birthright. . . . ✨I can’t say this lesson was easily learnt, but I’m glad I got there eventually. Acquiring the belief that I MATTER has changed my life. It helped me let go of a lot of things that didn’t matter to me and start focusing on the things I did. It helped me find a better direction, a sense of purpose and to move my mindset from suicidal to satisfied. It all starts with a sense of self worth.
In the past couple years, I've become very conscious of my impact on the environment and especially how I get my clothes. I am the kind of person who wears something until it's falling apart and even then I try to fix it. But with the big move, I had to downsize my closet and donate a lot of old clothes. Now, I'm in the process of rebuilding my wardrobe and doing right by the planet while also remaining true to my style. So I'm actually pleasantly surprised by the sustainable range at Monki. I've never bought from them before and am excited to see how it plays out. And all my dresses have pockets so 😍

It helped then but it's not now. . BRINGING YOURSELF HOME . 🤦♂️Take yourself back to your youngest self, write a letter as that young human, how you felt, your true feelings from back then, let it all out, it can bring you sadness, even anger (be safe & kind to yourself still) that's ok, maybe yourself needed a vent & didn't have the opportunity to do that, you can now, you're allowed. . THEN 👨👧Write your youngest self a letter, as the adult, remember you, the innocent you that tried to navigate tough times and speak to them with such love, kindness with
