Just over 3 weeks ago, I hiked 48km over 2 days with @hey__ellen 🌻 It was tough. The second day we hiked uphill, in over 30 degree heat along tarmac and with little shade. I got blisters, those popped and then I got more blisters (#sexy). The last stretch I remember thinking that if I could do this and push myself through the pain that I could do anything (Lol. Dramatic right?), I remember being so grateful for and proud of my body. I also remember arriving, and @hey__ellen and I agreeing with everyone who had said we were ridiculous to be doing such....😂 But now, as I'm facing the last mental push of my Honours Year... 1 more essay, 1 more exam and the last stretch of my thesis I'd do anything to be back there🌻 Here's me, and us, triumphantly at the end in a field of flowers.
Backing our boys @dhlwp for today’s game #wpjoulekkerding !! These guys are absolute legends. @Chris_van_zyl @ewviljoen @dandup12 It was a privilege having you apart of our Walking The Daisies sports day(90 kids from the Mamre community attended) Thank you for inspiring & uplifting the kids of the Mamre community and showing us the impact sports heroes can make in childrens lives. @cando_za @rockingthedaisies
Thank you @spazastore for the amazing dish covers you so generously sponsored our Walking The Daisies 2018 family. Seriously if you have not got yourself one of these dish covers you are missing out. We are totally obsessed with these and their story is beautiful : “Mannenburg in the Cape Flats is one of various communities where Spaza products are produced by women working from home. Challenging social conditions and gangsterism make our contribution incredibly valuable to the women”.
The @buttanuttspreads treated the walking the Daisies crew with some delicious breakfast toasties. Thanks for filling our tummies and ensuring we had enough energy to get us through our last day of the walk.
Winding it back this Wednesday to Walking the daisies 2018. What an incredible experience. Hearts were warmed, bonds formed and minds changed. _ _ Thank you to @cando_za for being our headline sponsor and making WTD 2018 possible and to @rockingthedaisies for being our project partner. The Video is coming soon and we can’t wait to share it with all of you.
Bae and I on the Beach 😉 ~~~~ For the first leg of #walkingthedaisies we participated in a beach clean up with the @thebeachco_op . We only walked a stretch of maybe 7km from Kreefte Baai to Melkbosstrand, but in that short stretch the group of us collected 20 full trash bags of rubbish. This included 1319 sweet wrappers, 1129 carrier bags and 1025 straws. I've been aware of how much plastic is in our oceans for a while now... We've all seen photos of sealife killed by our plastics, or the footage of the #greatpacificgarbagepatch ... But I tended to think of this as a problem for other areas that might be more densely populated or closer to more developed countries, not our South African beaches surely... But this short walk horrified me. A study done by UCT of SA beaches found that most of our plastic pollution comes from local sources. The problem is greater than the individual, and I know plastic makes our lives more convienent and is often a cheaper alternative - but your individual choices matter. Use metal/bamboo straws, reusable drinking water bottles, reusable carrier bags, start with what you can... Every piece of plastic ever made, is still out there in the world. This pollution affects more than just the ocean or marine life, it affects us too and as always, our most vulnerable communities are affected the worst. If you're interested in practical ways that you can make a difference, or for more info, visit http://plasticdetox.me and sign up and pledge to reduce your plastic consumption.
WALKING THE DAISIES || What awesome @capetown.southafrica weather we had yesterday for #walkingthedaisies! The views of Table Mountain, daisies along the beach, happy people all made for an excellent #beachcleanup vibe. Just over 100 walkers collected 20 full bags of marine debris from Kreefte baai to Melkbosstrand. Our top three #dirtydozen items were individual sweet wrappers at 1319, 1129 carrier bags and 1025 straws. Thanks to @planttheseededu for the opportunity to get involved and we hope to be back next year!
Aside from what actually ends up in landfill, the global ocean is being negatively affected by our solid waste and particularly plastic consumption habits. The ocean is a very special but sensitive ecosystem it is imperative that we look after it as best we can. Every Walking the Daisies kicks off with a beach clean up to set an intention for the rest of the walk. Last year 100 walkers collected 409.9kg of waste and 29 eco-bricks were filled and given to Waste-Ed our eco-brick partner. With more walkers we can up these numbers. I thought quite a bit whether or not to make this post, that it would seem somehow self glorifying or something, then I got over that and quickly realised that maybe it would inspire someone else, even just one person, and there’s definitely no harm in that. Beautiful beach right? My boyfriend @frothing_wes is a surfer and we spend a lot of time up on this beautiful west coast of South Africa, him in the water, me in my happy place. This place in particular (can’t say where, cos y’know 🏄♂️🏄♂️🏄♂️) is astoundingly magical, you really feel far away from any sorts of civilisation, the ultimate switch off zone. Swipe left 😭 yesterday when we got down there I couldn’t help but notice a LOT of visible plastic bottles. I’ve picked up trash here and there when I’ve seen it before but asides from #walkingthedaisies I’ve never fully engaged in a beach ‘clean up’. Yesterday something shifted inside me, amongst this far removed calm haven of beauty, the severity and reality of how much we’ve f@&*ed up our precious earth really really sunk in. I also realised it’s each and every one of our responsibility to do something about it. As ‘luck’ would have it, I found a bin bag to collect in but it wasn’t enough and I ended filling a whole bag and a whole surf board bag. I only walked about 200m total. Sadly I knew we couldn’t carry more the 20min walk to the car. Side note: We found a really jacked recycling plant in lamberts bay where we can only hope it won’t land up back in the sea, it’s on the road to the fnb incase you find yourself in lamberts with a bag of recycling! #girlfriendsofsurferswithpurpose #turtlenoose#whocanheimlichawhale? #beachcleanup#letsdothis#notuffynoproblem#tuffy#westcoast
I got inspired, explored the industrial harbour of CT, caught Anja in the flesh, had dinner with some serious babes, walked to daisies, met some really incredible humans, boogied till my knees gave in, had naps in Caddy's, surprised Ellen at her door, got in my car and drove away with the happiest but sad smile. 🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼 #lifeisgood#rockingthedaisies#walkingthedaisies
I was honoured to be treated with this breathtaking view after two days of walking to Rocking the Daisies 2017 Lucky for me I wasn't only walking to one of the most amazing festivals to be hosted each year, I also got the opportunity to meet the most amazing, like minded, people along the road. Everyone loves a good pre before a evening out and Walking the Daisies was exactly that, the perfect pre before Rocking the Daisies #rockingthedaisies#rtd2017#playhardtreadlightly#wewalkedthere#walkingthedaisies#wtd2017#move4goodness @rockingthedaisies @sbsconnect @firstchoice.za @greenpopsa @cloofwines @ratbagsa @brewkombucha @unitlogic @buttanuttspreads @ucooksa @wazoogles @frysfamily
Radical day yesterday with the walkers of Walking the Daises and the Mamre community 🙌. We were invited to host a workshop on plant propagation, alongside various other vibing workshops from eco-bricking with @waste_ed, to sports, to implementing a food garden, as well as a Dine With Mamre experience led by @chef_sage. All with the aim of social and ecological regeneration through integration of the Mamre and Walking the Daises communities. Big ups to @sbsconnect for putting together this incredible multi-day event 🙌. #mamre#walkingthedaisies#community#regeneration
