In our modern life it is common to lose our ability to cultivate energy in our bodies, dispersed in thoughts of the past, the future and pouring into cyberspace through digital devices.  Sitting, commuting and lack of interaction with the Earth, can close the hips, weaken the spine and make the psoas muscle very tight restricting our ability to explore a deeper quality of breathing leaving us feeling tired, drained and lethargic.  Practices like Yoga, Qi Gong or Tai Chi helps us regain this lost energy.  Once it is regain, it can support the numerous biological and psychological functions of all the organs whilst conditioning the body in mobility, flexibility, strength and balance 🌱

Asana is the third limb in the path of Yoga. In the Yoga sutras an Asana is defined as a body position which is steady and comfortable. This is infact the only definition given of the asanas. It’s important to note that The Yoga Sutras has only 3 sutras (out of 196) that refer to Asanas. Therefore what many of us today think of as ‘yoga’ - could be more accurately called 'asana practice'. Asana is the bodily pose which not only conforms to steadiness but is also equally pleasant and comfortable. The purpose of an asana is to get into that steadier state.  Asanas are usually classified into: 1. Meditative: Postures that are solely intended as aids in the process of abstraction,concentration& meditation. These are not meant for bodily ailments and are not expected to posses any therapeutic value 2. Cultural: Postures that bring out changes in the body by correcting- postural defects,disturbed function of various systems & improper muscle tone  So which kind of asana’s do you practise regularly? Is your asana practise built to bring a balance between your strength and flexibility? Urdhva Dhanurasana, Upward Bow Pose  1. Place your hands on the floor by your ears with fingers pointed towards your shoulders. 2. Bring feet up against the hip flesh and glutes keeping them slightly further apart than your hips 3. Press the feet and hands against the floor to lift your hips towards the ceiling 4. Place the crown of your head here and hold for five breaths if this is where you are in your practice. 5. For full wheel continue pressing into the feet and palms untill arms and legs are fully extended hold for five breaths then come down.  Whether you are modifying or taking the full posture, remember to keep the core strong by tucking the lower abdomen back towards the spine. This strengthens the body and protects your back 😊  For more info on modifying, working towards full posture, or other tips, come in to the studio and talk with our friendly teachers!

Just because one part of your body holds you back from doing a pose “fully” doesn’t mean you can’t do the pose. ⠀ This is one method I use with students whose wrist extension limits their ability to lift into wheel. The angle of the blocks takes the pressure off and allows for these joints to then bear weight in a more balanced way. ⠀ Does that mean someone with limited wrist extension is off the hook in terms of trying to increase their active range of motion in those joints? ⠀ Not a chance. In the YD Method, working on the components is where the magic really happens. Part 1/7 working towards Urdhva Dhanurasana is 2 block heart opener.  This is my favorite way to start class when leading to a backbend or inversion. Place on block sideways on medium height and a tall block behind that. As you start to sit back place your elbows next to the medium block and start to lie down. Lift your heart as you lie back. Just the bottom tips of the shoulder blades touch the block.  Rest your head on block 2. Rest here to open the heart. Then reach your arms up and wrap the triceps forward.  Bend the elbows and pla e the hands on the block.  Firm the arms in. I get a lot of DMs asking what type of gymnastics or dance training I've done or if I've been practicing since I was a child. The answer is always the same- I was never a dancer or gymnast and only started my practice in 2013. I did the year or two of both dance and gym when I was really young but that didn't last- swimming was my big thing until mid teens and I played baseball since the age of 9-17. When I started my practice, I could barely fold forward, bend my knees in downdog with heels up and the splits seemed like a actual dream. The top right photo is after 4 months into my practice and that was my "deepest bend at the time. Fast forward to today, and backends are something I can comfortably do after ten minutes or more into my practice and that still shocks me! It's amazing what years of consistency and practice can do to the body. Never give up on your practice, you will achieve amazing things with time! And remember- everyone started somewhere so don't compare your practice to someone else's. It's great to look to someone for inspiration and motivation- it's how I started! Bugün yoga yaparken odaklanmaya ve çözüm odaklı olmaya çok güzel bir örnek buldum. 🍃Çözüm kutunun dışında. ;))) Bazen bir pozda derinleşirken kaymaz dediğimiz kaliteli matlarda bile kayabildiğimiz  oluyor. 🍃Kaymamaya çalışmak SORUNA ODAKLANMAKTAN  ve sorunu tekrar etmekten başka bir şey değil. 🍃Amaca odaklanmak ise aslında çözüme odaklanmak oluyor, çok daha kolay ve zarif bir şekilde sonucumuza ulaşıyoruz. Amacım kaymamak değil. Amacım pratiğimi derinleştirmek ve GELİŞMEK. . . 💫Matımı kenara aldım ve zemini denedim. Zemin hiç kaymadığı içinde göğsümün açılması için bacaklarımı çok daha rahat itip düzleştirebildim. . . 🍃Bazen çözüm çok yakınımızda oluyor fakat biz aynı şeyleri yapmaya ısrar ettiğimiz için göremiyoruz. 🍃 İşte böyle anlarda amacını hatırla ve ODAKLAN. . . My fifth trip to Mysore is soon coming to an end and I’ve been reflecting on my time here. I have been coming to Mysore since 2012 and every trip was met with obstacles, followed by life changing events. This time around, I made the journey with a full heart, a clear mind, and great company - with my daughter. My last backbend before I traveled back to Poland. During my few week stay in the US I couldn’t bring myself to practice second series, I don’t know why, I just couldn’t. And I didn’t even feel guilty about it. Güneşli haftalar olsun 🌞🌞 Kabul ediyorum, arkaya eğilmeler benim temam değil hatta kaçtığım pozlarlar. Ama nedense son 1 yıldır sekanslarda yer veriyorum. Ama hala rahat olduğum, severek yaptığım pozlar değil. Sorun değil çünkü yoga sana iyi hissettirenle kalmak değil tüm hislerinle kalabilmek. Yani matın üstünde hayatta yaptığım gibi yapmıyorum, hoşuma gitmeyen hislerle karşılaştığımda kaçmak yerine orada kalmaya, sadece kalmaya çalışıyorum. Anlam yüklemeden, kendimi yargılamadan. She said, "Here's a big bowl of truth. How do you like it?" I actually needed it too. When I received her words, or the bowl of truth, I could see my thought patterns in contrast and they were quite different. It turns out that I had been twisting things around backwards and had been telling myself that I was no good, no one wants me around, that I'm good for nothing, and that I'm just being tolerated. But the reality was the opposite. I had been lying to myself - or taking the truth and bending it until it was a different thing. So, for this yogic practice of #truthfulness I would say that we should be really truthful with ourselves too, not just with others! It's so important. Well, there's always the option to live in a world of lies, but I don't recommend it. Day 2 #truthfulness or #alwaystellthetruth with any #heartopener and I chose #upwardfacingbowpose or #urdhvadhanurasana.  #yogaphilosophyasanas .
