I remember the first time I saw asparagus growing rogue in our community garden... 🌱💜 . Someone had left it unharvested and the stalks were shooting up like trees! . In my memory it is almost shoulder height, but in reality it was probably closer to three feet... Still, pretty tall for asparagus. . Seeing food come straight from the ground and understanding the process to get it there gave me a new respect for farmers and gardeners worldwide. . Without them, we would rely on our local weather and backyard skills (or lack thereof- anyone remember my single- tomato season?! 😅) . Who else is thinking about what it takes to grow food in your city? ... .. . #gardening#growyourown#asparagus#stories#communitygardens#fitstagram#nourish#plantbased#eattherainbow#eattolive#eatlocal#urbangarden#greens#healthyliving
This is giving us crazy crunchy colorful carrot cravings! Say that five times fast 😉😋🥕 #repost from @deannacat3 ... 🥕 New blogpost! 🎉 I think is is safe to say that we love homegrown carrots. Their flavor and texture really can't be beat... Not to mention ~ they're gorgeous, and harvesting carrots is ridiculously FUN! 🌈 ˙ Have you wanted to grow your own carrots too? Or have you tried, but maybe floundered a little? I hope I can help! "How to Successfully Grow Carrots: From Seed to Table" was just added to Homestead and Chill. ˙ 👉🏼 The link to the blog is in my profile. Check it out, and tag a friend! 💚 ˙ The article covers some of our favorite varieties, the best time to plant carrots, soil prep, how we prefer to sow and grow them, tips for watering, thinning, harvest, storage, and even ways to use and preserve them in the kitchen - including carrot greens! Yep, they're edible too.🌿 ˙ I try to hit major troubleshooting tips to help with common issues - for example, skip the fertilizer! Too much nitrogen makes carrots grow cray-cray, and not in a good way. 😜 I hope you find the article useful. Just wait... You'll be unearthing your own long, crunchy beauties in no time! 👌🏼
I’ve had to make a lot of big decisions this year. Do I keep the house or start over in a new space with the boys? Do I take my equity and buy and land build a small home? Do I give up my business and go get a “job” and send the boys to school? At one point, I was seriously considering selling and moving out of Tacoma. I sat with that idea for a weekend and honestly, I cried the entire time. I love my home in all its wildness. I Iove my neighborhood and my neighbors, I love my city. Keeping my home meant refinancing and a big jump in my mortgage. It meant all the repairs and upkeep were my responsibility. It meant I would have to seriously look at my budget and get super real about what it meant to live within my means. It meant letting go a little bit and letting the weeds take certain areas of my garden. As I move through this transition to being a single mom, I’m learning that the most sacred thing I can do is to Protect my space— physically and emotionally. It means learning to set firm boundaries and to say no, a lot. Or “this doesn’t work for me..” It means sitting with new ideas for a while before I act on them...
