Even though it saddens me to see it (and its creators) go, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Tempest finale was the best read I had this week. I’ll be honest, I am not educated enough in all things Brittish underground comics to truly appreciate all the nuance and thought on the page, but that’s what I love about LOEG, it requires and rewards a second reading. This final issue is steeped in its love for the oddest of Brittish comics from Moore/O’Neill’s youth, matched with a meta-commentary on how broken, bizarre and wonderful those creations are. They then set it all ablaze in a war of every science fiction character and concept imaginable only to laugh at the ridiculous farce of it all. I love the choice to present the final issue like an issue of 2000 AD (the weekly British SciFi magazine). It’s a clever and useful way to send off 20 years of stories and loose ends. I will particularly miss the essays that have started each issue of this six part series. These informative essays highlighted a British comic creator who through circumstance has been largely forgotten in the modern conversation. I appreciate these one-page windows into a world of comics I admittedly am mostly ignorant on. This issue highlighted Ron Turner, which is fitting considering his contributions to 2000 AD. I know Moore has a few more things that will be released post-retirement but I’m saddened that comics is loosing it’s best wizard but I love that he and Kevin used their final curtain call to take the piss out of comics and themselves. It’s the definition of bitter sweet and I hope Mr. Moore finds retirement suitable… but I imagine he’ll still be an insufferable old curmudgeon. Honorable mention this week goes to Little Bird’s wrap-up but that likely deserves its own post.
