🔗 San Pietro extra moenia, Spoleto, Umbria, Italy ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ⓒ Peter Callas 2018. All Rights Reserved. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ San Pietro extra moenia is an ancient church near Spoleto, Umbria built on a hilltop outside the city walls at the foot of the Monteluco di Spoleto and adjacent to the Via Flaminia, an ancient Roman road leading from Roma over the Apennine Mountains to Ariminum (Rimini) on the Adriatic coast. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The site was once an ancient cemetery, but a church dedicated to St Peter existed here by the 5th century, to house the chains that once bound the saint (now supposedly found in San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome). The Umbrian Romanesque structure, the beautiful and enigmatic facade of which survives, was built between the 12th and 13th centuries. It is floridly decorated with ornamental figures and animals in high relief. Some of the scenes represent events in the life of the saint, while others are moral stories taken from well-known medieval tales (The Lion and the Woodcutter, The Dead Fox and Ravens, The Student Wolf and Mutton) but reinterpreted from a Christian perspective. The facade is still in a good condition, however, due to its isolated location, it is covered with graffiti, some supposedly dating back to Napoleon’s troops, but most from the late 19th century. When we visited it showed signs of having been splattered with green paint. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The facade is divided into three horizontal bands of reliefs. The topmost band has four panels containing high reliefs of St. Peter, St. Andrew and two bulls, symbols of Christ - because like him they are destined for sacrifice. The middle band has a Cosmatesque oculus surrounded by the symbols of the four Evangelists. The lower section, seemingly belonging to two different periods, has the most beautiful and interesting work. The carving around the door is delicate Byzantine-styled work whilst the remainder is plainer and less skilfully
I spotted this little ceramic symbol of what looked like a rustic hiker on the wall near the Porto Romano in #sangemini, but I haven't been able to discover what it stands for. There do not seem to be any well-known trails or pilgrimage routes that run through the town. Anybody familiar with Italian symbols that might know? 🤔🇮🇹 #italy #umbria #italian #symbols @umbriatourism @tuscanynowandmore
After this past week, I'd really like to return to the sweet little backyard garden and pool of Casa del Poggio. Sitting out there in the peaceful quiet and the sun was really some of the best moments of the week spent there! 😍🌄🇮🇹 #sangemini #umbria #italy #italia #peaceful #content #relaxed #privatevilla @tuscanynowandmore
A joy it will be one day, perhaps, to remember even this. ☀️ This locanda on a working vineyard just outside of Orvieto was a dream. Here to interrupt the NY photos with some Italy vibes from the summer. #tlpicks #dolcevita #adventureisoutthere
#alcastellodifabro #bedandbreakfast #italia #italy #umbria #bagnoarmonico #koshi #suoni #sound #ricordi #children #carillon #bagnosonoro #relax #relaxing #yoga #baby #memories #umbriaturismo #turismo #explore #experience #followers #followmeplease #likeforlikeback #instagram
