#repost @leonardodicapriofdn • • • • • #repost @turtleconservancy The situation for turtles and tortoises worldwide is certainly dire— Turtles are the most endangered group of vertebrates in the world. Of the 356 species of turtles and tortoises worldwide, approximately 61% are threatened or already extinct. Every year species are rapidly declining and ultimately going extinct due to pressures from climate change, the pet trade, habitat destruction, human consumption, traditional medicine, invasive species and more. Within the next two decades, over one-third of the world’s turtle and tortoise species could be gone forever. It’s a lot, and it’s easy to feel helpless, but remember that you’re not alone, and neither are the turtles! Join us in our fight to secure their future and protect lands and all wildlife! 5 ways to protect turtles and tortoises in honor of World Turtle Day (Continued, see last post for the first three tips)🐢🐢🐢 . 4) If you live in an area where there isn’t many laws in place to protect turtles and tortoises then you can contact your legislature about protecting turtles. We suggest writing a letter to your local legislators ✍️ saying that you want turtle habitats to be preserved or closed off from road vehicles, and to ban shore drilling because it can lead to the deaths of endangered sea turtles 🐢 5) Knowing how to handle a turtle 🤲 sea turtles are very sensitive and must be held very carefully, we suggest never picking up an unhatched sea turtle unless you are trained in doing so. But if you saw a sea turtle that got stuck or went the wrong way then knowing how to properly handle one to pick it up and put it back in the right direction or over the obstacle that was keeping it from progressing then that would be a really good thing to know! Also with tortoises and other types of turtles in the wild there are times in which these turtles might want to cross the road. If you see one crossing or in the middle of the road then we suggest picking it up and taking it to where it wants to go then set it down. Don’t take it to the the side of the road that it came from because if you do that then it will just have to start all over. Turtles usually have a reason for wanting to cross the road. Also if you find a turtle that looks like they are sick or injured then please report it to your local animal control center. . If you love sea turtles then don’t forget to follow us at @conservocean_ and checkout our online store by using the link in our bio or by going to turtlesmonthly.com, we donate 30% of our profits to the Sea Turtle Conservancy to support them in there efforts to rescue sea turtles 🐢🐢🐢 . A belated #worldturtleday 🐢 post. . . I am fascinated by evolution. Charles Darwin, on arrival in the Galápagos, acknowledged the differences between Galápagos tortoises on humid vs low highlands, which seemed to affect shell shape and size. These observations (of many) helped him form his theory of evolution. It’s now believed their gigantism was selected for evolutionarily, with larger tortoises having the ability to populate remote islands by surviving the journey over water! . . The Galápagos National Park, encompassing all the islands, has very particular laws relating to wildlife to help preserve this incredibly special species, Galapagos green turtles, and so many more that make the Galápagos their home. . 🌎 Visitors to any protected areas must be accompanied by an authorized naturalist guide. There are some entire islands that are protected areas and cannot be reached without a guide! . 🌎 A distance of 2 meters must be maintained from all wildlife. Any photography taken with wild animals should respect this rule. . 🌎 Motorized aquatic sports, mini-subs, and aerial tourism is not allowed on any of the islands. . . . It’s important to do our part to keep these amazing animals safe and always follow rules set by wildlife authorities!
