It looks like HBO's final boxing broadcast will take place on December 8th and will feature super flyweight Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez and undefeated female welterweight champion, Cecilia Braekhus. "We've had a tremendous relationship with HBO and we've done some great events with them," said Tom Loeffler, who's company 360 Promotions will be staging this event. "HBO was the platform that launched 'Triple G' (Gennady Golovkin) here in the United States, frankly worldwide once he got on HBO. 'Chocolatito' was a tremendous world champion but when he got on HBO it launched his career when he was considered the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world." Braekhus (34-0, 9 KOs) on May 5th made history by becoming the first female boxer featured on HBO airwaves in defeating Kali Reis to retain her IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO, WBC world titles over ten rounds as the co-feature to Golovkin's second round stoppage of Vanes Martirosyan. ''So we're excited to bring back the best female  pound-for-pound fighter in the world and 'Chocolatito' who was the best male pound-for-pound fighter in the world," Loeffler said to BoxingScene.com on Wednesday afternoon. As for where this card would take place, Loeffler stated, "We're looking at either Los Angeles or Las Vegas." Gonzalez (47-2, 39 KOs), returning for the first time since suffering back to back defeats to WBC super flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, knocked out Moises Fuentes last month as part of the HBO Pay-Per-View undercard to the Canelo Alvarez-Golovkin rematch at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. News Credit: Boxing Scene #romangonzalez #ceciliabrækhus #tomloeffler #360promotions
When WBA 'regular' middleweight champion, Ryoto Murata, faces Rob Brant this Saturday night from the Park Theater in Las Vegas, there will be an interested observer in attendance. Tom Loeffler, who represents former unified middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs). "I'll be there, I'm flying up for the fight," he told BoxingScene.com on Wednesday afternoon. Should Murata come out victorious, there is the possibility for the popular Japanese fighter to face 'GGG' in 2019. "We have a very good relationship with Mr. (Akihiko) Honda and also with Top Rank and Bob Arum." Teiken Promotions is the lead promoter for Murata with Top Rank intimately involved. "That seems like a natural fight for Gennady," continued Loeffler, "Gennady has fought all over the world. If that fight were to happen in Japan, Murata is a fighter that has done some great things. The Japanese boxing market is having a renaissance because Murata gets monster TV ratings in Japan, sells out arena's there." Arum made it clear that in, "talking with Mr. Honda and his group, they want to do that fight." Should Murata defeat Brant, ''then it would be between Honda and Loeffler," Arum added. As for where Golovkin-Murata would take place, Arum stated, "Nothing has to happen anywhere but I would think it would be a big event in the United States but it would be a humongous event in Japan in the Tokyo Dome." It's no secret that promoter Eddie Hearn is looking to sign marquee names to feature on DAZN. And two notable names who are currently unattached in terms of a network are Gennady Golovkin and Manny Pacquiao. In speaking about Golovkin, Hearn told Boxingscene.com, "I know Tom Loeffler very well, we've done fights together. I've told him about our interest and our desire to get Gennady Golovkin on our platform" As for 'the Pac Man' who recently ended his association with Top Rank, "We've had chats with Manny Pacquiao,'' stated Hearn, who says he has also inquired with Golden Boy Promotions about Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, who returns on December 15th at the Madison Square Garden in New York against Rocky Fielding, who just happens to be promoted by Hearn. A decision still has to be made on who will televise Alvarez-Fielding. "I don't think we're going to get all three," admitted Hearn. "But I'm confident we'll get one of the three. Like I said, we've got extremely deep pockets but it doesn't mean we just go in and waste money, over-pay, because it could affect our business." "So we've got to be smart, got to be clever but also we know that to add one of these names would have a significant impact on subscriber numbers for DAZN." Hearn is not the one in the hunt for all three boxers. Showtime is attempting to secure at least one or more of the three names, and Top Rank - who have an exclusive deal with ESPN - are trying to make deals with all three boxers. Golovkin is looking to return by May of 2019, and Pacquiao has been mentioning a possible defense of his WBA "regular" welterweight title on a date in December. Former middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs) is not happy with the World Boxing Council's recent decision on his request to secure a direct rematch with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. At the WBC's recent convention in Kiev, Golovkin submitted a request for the sanctioning body to order a direct trilogy fight. But Golovkin did not get his way. Instead, the WBC approved Canelo's request to make a voluntary defense and they ordered Golovkin to face WBC interim-champion Jermall Charlo in a final eliminator. Golovkin, who felt that he did enough to win the rematch, expected to receive the direct trilogy with Canelo. "Golovkin feels left out and I'm very sorry about that. I just read a message from him. You have to understand that boxing is a stage, if the fight is very good [then another is demanded], but they had a war and I do not think it's something that should happen immediately. There was a message from Tom Loeffler, from his promoter, the message is not negative, simply that they expected that we would have voted for a direct rematch," Sulaiman told ESPN Deportes. On Friday, Canelo announced that he would return to the ring for the second time in 2018 - when he moves up to the super middleweight division on December 15th. Canelo will challenge British boxer Rocky Fielding for the WBA "regular" title at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The contest will mark Canelo's debut on the East Coast. If Canelo wins, the boxer will become a three division world champion. Win or lose, Canelo will retain his middleweight belts and likely won't fight again until May of 2019. No word just yet if Golovkin intends to face Charlo. News Credit: Boxing Scene #gennadygolovkin #tomloeffler #gggpromotions #jermallcharlo #alhaymon #premierboxing #golovkincharlo
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya has made it clear that Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) will have the final word on whether or not a trilogy fight takes place with Gennady Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs). During the closing of the World Boxing Council's convention in Kiev, Ukraine, the 'Golden Boy' reported that next week he plans to sit in Guadalajara with Canelo, Eddy and Chepo Reynoso to discuss the next step, which will include a decision regarding the television platform of where his fights will go. De La Hoya explains that he's currently not focused on the trilogy fight with Golovkin. The first ordered of business for Canelo, is the possibility of fighting again on December 15th - and their future plans for a new network deal, after HBO announced their decision to drop boxing at the end of 2018. "It was an incredible fight, I'm not going to rule out a third one (with Golovkin), the public deserves it - but first, Canelo has already surpassed him, he won and we'll see if he gives [Golovkin] another chance," said De la Hoya to ESPN Deportes. "(I spoke to Tom Loeffler), we just saw him, I'm not thinking about the rematch with Golovkin, I have other plans for Canelo. I'm going to Guadalajara next week to sit down with him and discuss the future." If Canelo decides to fight in December, De La Hoya would love to see that contest take place in New York City. It was revealed that Canelo would receive a brand new WBC belt that credits him as a middleweight champion on October 15th in Mexico City in a special ceremony. "Canelo and Mexico deserve it, that's the way it should be, Canelo is a representative of everyone in Mexico and we on this side (in the United States) are proud of him," said De la Hoya. As BoxingScene.com previously reported, the World Boxing Council will allow their middleweight champion, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, to make a voluntary defense of the title. And they also ordered a final middleweight eliminator between WBC interim-champion Jermall Charlo and once-beaten Gennady Golovkin. Canelo will have to fight the Charlo vs. Golovkin winner. Charlo and Golovkin were both pushing for direct fights with Canelo, who wanted a voluntary defense - and WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman saw this scenario as the best solution for everyone. "We have the requests of GGG and the interim champion to face the champion. I spoke with Oscar De La Hoya (promoter of Canelo) and his request is to allow Canelo to make a voluntary defense," said Sulaiman to ESPN Deportes. "I would like to ask the governing board to order Charlo and Golovkin to fight, Canelo will make a voluntary and then go with the winner of Golovkin and Charlo." Tom Loeffler, promoter for Golovkin, indicates that his boxer wanted a direct rematch with Canelo. Golovkin feels strongly that he beat Canelo in September 2017, when they fought to a controversial twelve round split draw. And he also believes that he did enough to win in their exciting rematch. He will meet with Golovkin shortly to discuss the new developments, with facing Charlo to earn a Canelo trilogy. "Gennady wanted the direct fight with Canelo, we feel that the third fight will be even better than the other two," said Loeffler. "We believe that what happened outside the ring (with the judges' cards) does not correspond with what happened inside, but let's talk about it. Gennady is resting with his family but we will see him." News Credit: Boxing Scene #gennadygolovkin #tomloeffler #gggpromotions #jermallcharlo #alhaymon #premierboxing #wbcboxing #golovkincharlo
With HBO Sports confirming that beginning in 2019 that they will no longer be televising boxing, marquee fighters like Gennady Golovkin - who was a staple of the network the past several years - are now in essence, television/platform free agents. "We'll look at all the options and we'll weigh out the best path for Gennady to go," Tom Loeffer, the head of GGG Promotions told BoxingScene.com while in Germany. "HBO was big for his career, launched his career in the United States and really took his career to a different level, being on HBO 14 times since his debut in September of 2012." "But if HBO is not going to be in the boxing business in 2019, we have to look for the best platform for him. We've already had a lot of interest from other platforms and we'll see what direction he wants to go." Loeffler said he heard the HBO news directly from Peter Nelson (the head of HBO Sports) earlier this morning. "It's a surprise because we're such a vital part of boxing for so many years. We understand their priorities have shifted, there are other platforms that have come into North America. So we'll see what's the best platform for our fighters to continue with," Loeffler further explained to BoxingScene. And yes, the various platforms that are looking to add to their stable have already come calling. "Since the news broke I've been contacted by all the major platforms and so yeah, there's not only a lot of interest in Gennady but all the other fighters that have been on HBO,'' said Loeffler. Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs), suffered his first career loss on September 15th in losing a close majority decision to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Now that HBO has announced it is moving away from broadcasting boxing, two of the sport’s biggest stars are TV free agents. Promoters for middleweight rivals Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin can begin negotiating new rights deals for at least their respective next fights. Both of their contracts with HBO ended following their middleweight championship rematch September 15 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Count Bob Arum among the sport’s power brokers who are very interested in working with Alvarez and Golovkin. Arum told BoxingScene.com on Thursday that his promotional company’s president, Todd duBoef, has reached out to Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s promoter, about airing Golovkin’s fights on ESPN or ESPN Pay-Per-View. Top Rank has an exclusive content contract with ESPN and any promoter that wants bouts broadcast on ESPN must work with Top Rank in accordance with that agreement. For Arum and Top Rank, working with Alvarez obviously would be much more complicated than partnering with Golovkin. Beyond Alvarez’s superstar status, Arum has a contentious relationship with Oscar De La Hoya, Alvarez’s promoter and Top Rank’s franchise fighter for most of De La Hoya’s career. “Todd will be talking to Tom Loeffler about the possibilities,” Arum said. “And as far as Canelo is concerned, he’s under contract to Golden Boy and they’re experienced enough, I assume, to make their own deal. So if they came to us and wanted to know what ESPN had to offer, we would tell them. But that’s up to Golden Boy." “As far Canelo goes, we’d wait for Oscar to approach us. And as far as Golovkin goes, Todd’s been reaching out to Loeffler. But as we’ve said, we’re open to doing fights promoted by other promoters. That’s what we’re doing November 3rd with [Miguel] Berchelt and [Miguel] Roman. And that’s what we’re doing February 2nd, when we’re doing [Sergey] Kovalev and [Eleider] Alvarez.” News Credit: Boxing Scene #caneloalvarez
Abel Sanchez, the trainer for former middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, does not have a high opinion of HBO broadcast analyst Max Kellerman. During the HBO Pay-Per-View broadcast, there were many fans who felt Kellerman was very "pro-Canelo" during much of his commentary of the highly competitive action. According to Sanchez, he never pays attention to the HBO on-air crew - Jim Lampley, Harold Lederman and especially Kellerman. "You know what, I don't watch the HBO guys because all 3 of them are biased. Max Kellerman is in a world of his own, watching something other people aren't watching, so I don't really watch them. He's by far one of the most biased commentators on TV," Sanchez stated during an interview session on Reddit. Sanchez believes his fighter won the contest, with a 7 to 5 round margin (115-113). Going into the final round, Sanchez felt Golovkin was up by one round and begged his boxer to win the twelfth round - which he believes he did. "Absolutely, I score every round, I keep it in my head. I was, in the 12th, I felt we were 1 round up. I felt it was 6-5 going into the 12th, so I just wanted the 12th round to be more decisive. Not that I thought we were 6-5, but I took into account we were in Vegas, it was more 7-4 really, but taking into consideration where you're at. That's why I tried to implore him that I needed this round just to be sure," Sanchez said. Sanchez has nothing against the judges and there is no big issue with the decision, but he obviously wants his boxer to secure a trilogy fight with Canelo. Tom Loeffler met with former middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on Tuesday afternoon to discuss his future. On September 15th, Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs) lost his WBA, IBO, WBC middleweight titles via a twelve round majority decision to Mexican star Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena. "He's just taking some time off, reflecting on everything. He hasn't said when he wants to fight again. He's still very disappointed with the decision, as we all are," Loeffler told BoxingScene.com after his lunch meeting with Golovkin. Loeffler stated that in his opinion, "I don't think he's going to fight (again) this year." As for the possibility of a third chapter with Canelo - "That's the biggest fight still in boxing. So I think that would be everyone's priority, to see when a third fight can be made," said Loeffler. "Fans are the lifeblood of the sport and they were very unhappy with the decision so they would want to see a third fight There was more outcry over this fight over the first fight because this is the fight that actually took his titles away." Golovkin, rallied in the late rounds versus 'Canelo' but lost by the fight by the scores of 114-114 and 115-113 twice. The two judges (Dave Moretti and Steve Weisfeld) who gave the fight to the Mexican star scored the 12th round for Alvarez, which raised few eyebrows. "The fans, you see them on social media, they all believe Gennady won the fight or at worst should've kept his titles," said Loeffler. Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum is going to throw his hat in the race to secure the services of middleweight free agents Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. Last Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Canelo (50-1-2, 34 KOs) won a twelve round majority decision over Gennady Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs) to capture the WBC, WBA middleweight titles. The judges saw it 114-114, 115-113, 115-113. In the aftermath of that fight, both boxers became TV free agents - as their network deals with HBO had expired. For decades, HBO was regarded as the biggest network force in boxing. No longer is that the case, as the network's budget has been significantly slashed and their 2018 schedule of televised fights has been bare bones. Showtime, ESPN and DAZN are leading the way with their respective busy schedules. Arum, as part of his exclusive deal with ESPN, would love to get Canelo and Golovkin on the network. He recently lured away several key fights from HBO, including the light heavyweight rematch between Sergey Kovalev and Eleider Alvarez, and the super featherweight clash between Miguel Berchelt and Miguel Roman. "In our agreement with ESPN we will welcome all promoters," said Arum to ESPN Deportes. "[Main Events CEO] Kathy Duva is coming with the rematch between (Sergey) Kovalev and (Eleider) Alvarez, [promoters] Fernando Beltran and Oswaldo Kuchle are coming with Miguel Berchelt and Miguel Roman; We are going to be open to everyone." "And if Oscar de la Hoya is sincere and Golden Boy wants to make fights on ESPN in that agreement that we have, we are open to it, in the same way we will be for Tom Loeffler and Gennady Golovkin." Abel Sanchez, trainer for middleweight contender Gennady Golovkin, feels strongly that his boxer did enough to win last Saturday's rematch with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Canelo and Golovkin fought toe to toe in a highly competitive contest for twelve rounds, with the Mexican star securing a twelve round majority decision at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The scores were 114-114 for the draw, and two cards of 115-113 for Canelo. Sanchez has spoken with Golovkin about the loss, and the once-beaten boxer feels Las Vegas will always favor the money draw of the contest. "Every team always feels like they won the fight when they lose. We feel we won, everyone seems to think we won, except the two judges that scored the 12th for Canelo. Al Bernstein watched the fight without the commentators and he scored the 12th easily for Golovkin, so of course we felt like we won, we felt like we won that night," Sanchez stated during an 'Ask Anything' interview session on Reddit. "He's disappointed, a little angry that Vegas seems to favor the house fighter. There's nothing we can do to change the decision, so we discussed how we're going to...how we're gonna approach questions about it. We feel Gennady is the people's champion, the people feel he won, so that's what we're thinking." Sanchez wants a third fight to happen, hopefully in May of 2019. Should a third fight happen, Sanchez is not concerned about the possibility of Canelo making further adjustments in a trilogy meeting. "For me to say major adjustments would be dissing the effort by Canelo. What adjustments can Canelo make to do better? They were separated by one round. In the first fight, if you take out the ridiculous score by Adelaide Byrd, one round separates. Same thing second fight, one round separates them," Sanchez said.
