MEN 3000M STEEPLECHASE In 10 days, competition at the Oceania Championships commence in Townsville where a very strong Australian team will be in action against the best from the region. Last summer we witnessed the dramatic rise of the men’s steeplechase in Australia with three athletes, Max Stevens (S), Matthew Clarke (V) and Ben Buckingham (V) running 8:40.01 or quicker. It signalled the best depth in Australia for seven years - since 2012. Then in May, Ed Trippas raised the standard further running 8:33.90 – pushing the depth to the best level since 2006 when we had Youcef Abdi, Peter Nowill, Martin Dent and Grant Schmidlechner under 8:40. At the Oceania Championships we have Clarke, Buckingham and the inform Stevens doing battle with NZ’s 3:37 1500m athlete Eric Speakman, now running over the barriers. Stevens has come close in May (8:29.48) and June (8:31.69) to the 8:29.00 world championships standard. #thisisathletics#coles#blksport#beyondlimitsknown
There were seven Aussies in action at the #oslodl this morning with the highlight a second consecutive PB for Matt Ramsden. Off a slow early pace, Stewart McSweyn kicked home to place sixth in the 3000m in his second fastest time of 7:38.22. His training partner Matt Ramsden continued his breakthrough season to place 12th, taking 7 seconds from his PB to run 7:45.68. He leapt from 36th to 15th Australian all-time. Ryan Gregson ran a powerful final lap in the Dream Mile to place 7th in a quick 3:53.51, just outside the Doha world championships standard of 3:53.10. Over the last 8 years only Ryan has ever run that quick amongst Aussies. Earlier in the evening Commonwealth Games champion Kathryn Mitchell won the javelin with a throw of 56.07m. Australia had two young athletes in the half-mile events Joseph Deng and Carley Thomas. Jo placed 8th in 1:48.79 and Carley, who was caught up in a busy race where there was a fall she had to avoid, was 8th in her Diamond League debut in a time of 2:05.78. #thisisathletics#coles#blksport#beyondlimitsknown
