W I N T E R C E A R I G . . . "Her hair was long, her limbs were white, And fair she was and free; And in the wind she went as light As leaf of linden-tree. Beside the falls of Nimrodel, By water clear and cool, Her voice as falling silver fell Into the shining pool. Where now she wanders none can tell, In sunlight or in shade; For lost of yore was Nimrodel And in the mountains strayed." - (excerpt from 'The Song of Nimrodel', by JRR Tolkien) . . . The winter season has held firm dominion over the land and in the hearts of its inhabitants for some time now. The darker season presents itself in a wide array of forms; at times majestic, as seen in the resplendent crystalline wonder of softly falling snow, and at others, harsh, monotonous and oppressive as the howling winds bearing down across frozen tundra. The aspects of transforming power which give winter its greatest beauty are also those which make it treacherous and perilous. The winter season provides a contemplative atmosphere, but it can also bring with it a profound melancholy and isolation which one can become lost within. Much like the ice, binding waters in frozen stasis, we can often find ourselves being held captive by our thoughts, beholden to negative patterns of behavior. It can seem as though the potential which once was before us has ceased, leaving us to wander aimlessly, astray from coherent purpose. With winter's grasp beginning to give way, what are some thoughts or modes of behavior that you wish set yourself free from? In what ways can you envision and manifest this change within your being? . . . ♾ Then Morgoth hurled aloft Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld, and swung it down like a bolt of thunder. But Fingolfin sprang aside, and Grond rent a mighty pit in the earth, whence smoke and fire darted. Many times Morgoth essayed to smite him, and each time Fingolfin leaped away, as a 'lightning shoots from under a dark cloud; and he wounded Morgoth with seven wounds, and seven times Morgoth gave a cry of anguish, whereat the hosts of Angband fell upon their faces in dismay, and the cries echoed in the Northlands. Turgon! - - Turgon was the second son of Fingolfin and Anairë, he left Valinor together with his brothers and his cousins. In the year 50 of the first age, Turgon was instructed by Ulmo to prepare a secret kingdom and was shown the hidden valley of Tumladen. After 52 years of secret labor, Turgon led his people into Gondolin, where he ruled for over 500 years. - - Credit to the artists For any reuqest dm me #turgon#thesilmarillion#silmarillion#tolkien#jrrtolkien#gondolin
♾ Therefore Morgoth came, climbing slowly from his subterranean throne, and the rumour of his feet was like thunder underground. And he issued forth clad in black armour; and he stood before the King like a tower, iron-crowned, and his vast shield, sable on-blazoned, cast a shadow over him like a stormcloud. But Fingolfin gleamed beneath it as a star; for his mail was overlaid with silver, and his blue shield was set with crystals; and he drew his sword Ringil, that glittered like ice. 'But when men ran to learn what it might be, they cried aloud or wept. For the Enemy was flinging into the City all the heads of those who had fallen fighting at Osgiliath, or on the Rammas, or in the fields. [...] But marred and dishonoured as they were, it often chanced that thus a man would see again the face of someone he had known, who had walked proudly once in arms, or tilled the fields, or ridden in upon a holiday from the green vales in the hills. In vain men shook their fists at the pitiless foes that swarmed before the gates. [...] But soon there were few left in Minas Tirith who had the heart to stand up and defy the hosts of Mordor. For yet another weapon, swifter than hunger, the Lord of the Dark Tower had: dread and despair.' / 🏰🔥 . 🏞#MiddleEarthMarch Day 19 ~ Osgiliath: outposts, capitals and forgotten history.🌋 . [the briefest caption in MEM history today! Sorry guys, sleepiness is real and accepts no compromises from anyone 😂🙈] I love the parts of both books and movies set in the ancient Gondorian capital of Osgiliath; I feel like there's so much untold, hidden history to reveal behind every column, marble staircase, statue or building. The fact that only ruins remain, and that those same ruins are used as a last outpost to defend and protect the glorious bastion that is the city of Minas Tirith makes the appeal of the old settlement even more poetic and fascinating. 🗡🛡 Of course, much of the reason why these chapters and big screen battles are so intriguing is because Faramir is there to up the ante and make everything better LOL 🤣👍 He's undoubtedly one of the most underrated and interesting characters in the plot, with a wonderfully complex and developing arc: wise, humane, flawed, loyal, brave and honest; you could say that Faramir in a way represents Osgiliath, just as Boromir fits in a place like Minas Tirith. . #lotr#thelordoftherings#lordoftherings#thehobbit#thesilmarillion#middleearth#jrrtolkien
♾ Thus he came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came. That was the last time in those wars that he passed the doors of his stronghold, and it is said that he took not the challenge willingly; for though his might was greatest of all things in this world, alone of the Valar he knew fear. But he could not now deny the challenge before the face of his captains; for the rocks rang with the shrill music of Fingolfin's horn, and his voice came keen and clear down into the depths of Angband; and Fingolfin named Morgoth craven, and lord of slaves. Day 17 of #middleearthmarch Fangorn:" Don't be hasty" 💚 Hell yeah I've been looking forward to this prompt for some reason, I love talking about the Ents and the forests in Middle-earth so much. I think this is mostly because Tolkien himself appreciated nature so much and you can truely notice this in this works. The way he describes Middle-earth's sceneries especially the forests is just so poetical and magical in a way and it always makes me think about what the world used to look like in the old days. Imagine all the things you could ask an Ent if they existed in our world! I really like to imagine that they do and that they still somehow keep care of the beautiful nature that we take for granted.
Day 16 of #middleearthmarch Edoras/Horse lords 💚 If I had to pick between the men of Rohan and the men of Gondor I'd honestly choose the Rohirrim. Of course I admire the courage and strength of the Gondorians but I think the Rohirrim are really underappreciated. Just like the Gondorians they have already suffered a great deal under Saruman's influence before the entire ring thing buisness started and we need to appreciate this more😋 Also, Éomer and Éowyn are both so strong and courageos in their unique way and I love both of them so much❤
Day 15 of #middleearthmarch Saruman and Isengard 💚 I honestly don't have a lot to say about Saruman. I love Isengard as a location but tbh what's new?😂 I love Saruman as a villain and seeing him basically kick his butt and replace him as the White Wizard is still one of the most badass moments I was ever allowed to witness😂

'It is said that the Hornburg has never fallen to assault,' said Théoden; 'but now my heart is doubtful. The world changes, and all that once was strong now proves unsure. How shall any tower withstand such numbers and such reckless hate?' . 'Where now are the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing? Where is the harp on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing? Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing? They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow; The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow. Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning, Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?' / 🏰🌌 . 🏞#MiddleEarthMarch Day 18 ~ Helm's Deep: Epic Battles.🌋 . I know that in the books this particular Rohirrim lament wasn't recited by Théoden on the eve of the Battle of Helm's Deep as it happens in the movies, but the heart-wrenching way in which Bernard Hill managed his declamation just made it impossible for me not to include it for today's prompt 😭💔 This is first battle that takes place within the context of the main storyline, and the first confrontation in the War of the Ring that explodes on such a huge scale; its immediate consequences will also have important repercussions and reverberations for the entire duration of the conflict. 🗡🏹 Needless to say, the emotional involvement in this battle has always been MASSIVE for every reader, avid fan or even just casual watcher of the movies: it has all the elements that contribute to shape a great action-packed fight, while simultaneously retaining shades and nuances that speak to the more intimate, relatable chords of the audience. ⚔👑 In the words of Gimli himself: 'Certainty of death. Small chance of success. What are we waiting for?' 💪😂 . . #lotr#thelordoftherings#lordoftherings#thehobbit#thesilmarillion#middleearth#jrrtolkien
