The streets are the only thing that can light up the inner dark place in which we all fall into sometimes. January 2019 Sofia, Bulgaria was with the highest level of air pollution ever. The concentration of particulates in the atmosphere (PM10, PM 2.5) reached alarming levels, in some areas up to 5-600 micrograms per cubic meter – 10 times more than the allowed limit. They say that it is the plateau that Sofia is located in as the reason for such apocalyptic mood. However, the determinant causes are not linked to nature, but to human activity. On the one hand, there is city traffic: in Sofia, a city now inhabited by over 1,2000,000 people, there are now 550-600 cars per 1,000 inhabitants. On the other hand it is the heating system developed in the socialist period that is still used and not developed since than. People in the suburbs still use whatever they can to heat. This is a shot from one of those winter days when the air was so heavy that you were able to see the particles and you were not able to see things 20-30m ahead.
