BEYOND excited and honored to host this Saturday’s 2pm matinee talkback of “Behind the Sheet” with historian Deborah Gray White from Rutgers, urogynecologist Dr. Ambereen Sleemi, executive director of International Medical Response, and playwright Charly Evon Simpson. This production is a fictionalized account of J. Marion Sims’s operations on enslaved women - told through the women’s voices. Sims, also known as the father of gynecology, made medical breakthroughs through his work on those women, all with no anesthesia. His work has been heralded while their stories have been largely forgotten- until now. This production is brilliant, emotional, and mandatory; an homage and acknowledgement of the enslaved women whose pain and sacrifice led to the advancement of modern medicine. It’s amazing. Go see it. Extended for the third time because of the rave reviews. Learn more and see the play @estnyc.

Support the Arts....As inspired go see, stream and share the experience of Gully boy Director: @zoieakhtar Written by Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar With: @ranveersingh Alia Bhatt Fan Club Alia Bhat Siddhant Chaturvedi Gully Boy, a Bollywood Movie, that clearly illustrates all that is possible in a beautifully composed story that leaves your heart cracked open, inspired to dream and your entire being wanting more. Hollywood might want to PAY attention… Gully Boy, shows all of us what happens when a masterful team comes together to tell a story rooted in a culture that still contains deep divides within class, social-family obligations and religion within the lens of something that has a purity and spirit about it. The omission of extreme violence, sex, objectifying humans, and language are a breath of fresh air. Furthermore, the film honors the delicate issues that naturally arise when a class of people are constantly dancing between their place in the world, a inner dream and survival. Finally, by utilizing the gift of spoken word as the seed inspirers, NAS, Divine and Naezy, in the form of Hip-Hop to weave the story and create the path for the possibility within a dream. The vision, ultimately, is realized as it evolves into ACTION...truly was refreshing (especially for me who has traveled and worked closely with one of the world’s well known Hip-Hop Artists, apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas). Ironically, this story is very similar to his own true story. A few lines from the movie that can inspire us all… Father (class and occupation: servant) says to his son, “You must adjust your dream to meet your reality. Son replies, “I will adjust my reality to meet my dream.” Deep bow to you all. Keep creating and inspiring! #gullyboy#zoyaakhtar#reemakagti#ranveersingh#aliabhatt#sigghantchaturvedi#film#thearts#india#culture#dream#bendreality#hiphop#spokenword#transcendtheis#inspired#socialexpression#apldeap#blackeyedpeas

Light Up Poole! We have worked with 3 primary schools, to get the children to produce poetry to be written on the pavement in light, for @lightuppoole. A light writing robot, NYX, will write the poems, allowing the children to see their work come to life, in light form. Here are two of the poems they have produced! . . ' As the waves danced on the land, The singing of the ripples made a beautiful band.’ ‘The sun and the moon command the tides, Here, there, far and wide. Beneath the waves is a beautiful mystery.' . . ‘Coral is purple Seagulls are very pesky The crab will pinch you.' 'People sit on boats, Throwing rubbish on the way, The people must stop.’

#waybackwednesday .... Giving you information on The Arts & Black Culture 💕💚 The Harlem Renaissance also asserted African American’s identity intellectually and linked our struggle to other blacks around the world and planted the seeds for what would later become the Civil Rights movement and for the first time provided positive and beautiful images of black people. #thearts#aka1908#exemplifyingexcellence#akaxxo#blackhistory#ourhistory
