Nativity scenes have a special place in my heart. I get so much joy every time I see one on display. It is a great reminder of the great love God has for me 💕 During this Advent season, I love settling down. For starters, I will choose Amazon over a store any day because well, I hate shopping. When I get to be calm in the midst of so much holiday chaos, it is so so good for my soul! 💕 The nativity is a gentle reminder for me to stop and be still. It is well. #teachersintheword#teachersofinstagram#christianteacher#christianteachersofinstagram

Recently we have been working on following specific steps and making connections with each step. So on Friday before our Hot Chocolate Dojo Point Party, the students had to write down exactly how to make hot chocolate then follow their own directions to make the hot chocolate. ☕️ It was funny to see how exact they really could be and then we got to enjoy the hot chocolate, marshmallows and extra whipped cream (picture 4 😂) #iteachfifth#specialeducation#autism#aspergers#missmaryinmaryland#teachersofinstagram#teacherspayteachers
I am a fan of giving my kids choices to be able to learn the science content. This activity is like tic-tac-toe which contain projects of differing difficulty levels. I tell the kids that they should pick projects that are ‘best fit’ for them. Not too easy but also not too hard! Kids should always be challenged but when it’s too hard for them, they shut down. Our school does NOT have 1-1 chrome books but I DO hoard the chrome book cart (sorry SH lovers ❤️) While doing these projects, they may need to turn to google/YouTube to research WHY they don’t understand something. This gives them the ability to learn how to find out information outside of school too! . . . . #middleschoolscience#middleschoolteacher#iteach6th#iteach5th#teachersofinstagram#scienceclassroom#teachersfollowteachers#teachersofinstagram#instateach
A quick and lovely Christmas party before the chaos of the last week begins!! I'm so excited for the kids, they've worked so hard these last few months and all with positive attitudes to learning ♥️ I'd safely bet they're all on the nice list! ☺️ The week kicks off with our carol service tomorrow (WHERE is my favourite Christmas jumper??), a festive cinema trip later in the week and plenty of surprises in between!! 🎄🎀🎄🎀🎄🎀🎄 . . . . . . . . #teachersfollowteachers#teacherlife#teachersofinstagram#primaryschoolteacher#primaryschool#christmasclassroom
Last Thursday, this senior student (the President of the Black Student Union) spent hours after school (after organizing a day field trip to see @thehateugivemovie with 2 other local BSUs) hand-wrote/posted 500+ appreciation letters on educators’ doors as a way to respond to recent hate vandalism at the school, ie offensive letter to an educator of color. 24 hours later (Friday), she got accepted into one of the best Historically Black Colleges/Universities and colleges in the nation, @howard1867 (Howard University). To see her friends in the BSU celebrate/support her accomplishment (which only amplified when another senior member got accepted into Howard, too) was a happy Black Friday to end a long week at the school.
You want to greet students at the door, but then Johnny has already used his Chromebook as a fly swatter and made the girl next to him cry before the bell even rings. New Miss Management column just posted on the website: One Step Up. 🤓 Link in bio. NEW TEACHERS: Ask your own question while you’re there! Every question submitted in December will be entered for a chance to win a copy of ‘What to do with Student #2’ our no BS classroom management manual.💛
The most minimalist of holiday decor in our house. Really, this is all we have except for some candles in the window. I’m really okay with this. We travel to other homes for the holidays, so we get our decor fix then. ... I’ve just been laying low for the past few days, focusing on he essentials until I make it to break. Have a lovely Sunday!
Episode #2 - Why teachers need a vibrant classroom library, the Top 3 Books my students raved about last year, and I’ll answer a question about what books would be appropriate for a middle grade reader who LOVES horror. Check it out at: http://www.booksbetween.com/booksbetweenpodcast/2016/8/1/2-why-you-need-a-vibrant-classroom-library
This is the ghost bike memorial that my brother's cycling friends have placed at the site where he died. If you are unfamiliar with ghost bikes (I was, before this horrible tragedy), ghost bikes are memorials for bicyclists who are killed on the street. They are placed as quiet support for cyclists' rights to safe travels. There are ghost bike memorials all across the world. You can check out ghost bikes.org to learn more about the movement. #ghostbikeproject

To gain a deeper understanding of the protagonist in the novel, clinical social workers, @mswjake and @kayla_rsw facilitated a lesson on trauma and social and emotional intelligence. The newfound insights and empathy for the character were inspiring. #wellbeing#lit#intelligences#teachersofinstagram#teachers
To child proof or not to child proof? Friends, we don’t use gates or cabinet locks 😳 And our home is baby friendly. . . . We’ve decorated and designed our space so that our whole home is a YES. We want our children to feel free to wander and touch and play because this is their space too. I want to be able to leave the room for a moment and know that they will be just fine. And if we notice that something is not safe we simply change it so that it is! Easy, but also requires watching your babes closely and tuning into their needs. . . . Okay, I know what you’re wondering... the electronics or cleaning supplies 😰 . Here’s the deal. We have 2 or 3 “NO ZONES”— what this means is there are a few places in the home that are simply off limits. When we see the children approaching these areas we gently say, “we don’t play over here” and redirect them to ALL the other spaces that are a yes. The key is in the diligence, consistency, and repetition from day one. Do not deviate from the script, always remain calm about it, and offer another option. Sidenote, our cleaning products are chemical free! Ask me how 😘 . How do you tackle child proofing?
