This account is really meant to be an extension of a blog project under the same name. The blog has a ‘message’. I’m not sure I can put what “my message” is into words but if I come across something I feel captures ‘it’, I’ll post it here! Cool? Maybe and hopefully, you’ll feel the message too. Also, remember this is only IG and not actual therapy- please seek your own help/care if needed❤️ . 🌸Psychotherapists are helpers like many other helping professionals and for therapists in particular, we all have different preference in ‘being seen’. Depending on the style, personality, and theory approach, to shift away attention from the client or others and onto ourselves can feel uncomfortable or weird for some therapists or totally cool and fine for others. I think I’m closer to the ‘uncomfortable’ side of the spectrum (but not in an unhealthy way🤓). So here’s this selfie as my ‘practice what I preach’ moment for today —and challenging myself to something kinda scary. 🙃 . 🌻Other randoms ▫️I’m an enthusiastic mom of 2 and pretty much obsessed with my boys▫️I’m Miami home grown and educated with #305 accent and all, plus a #fiu pride bank card🐾. ▫️I’ve worked with a lot of communities and consider myself to be a huge proponent and advocate of education, health care and economic empowerment. ▫️#Cardio and #yoga kept me sane and gave me LIFE in my early 20s after a series of tough life lessons ▫️When it comes to tv shows/movies, I’m the most outdated person I know, same for technology and gadgets ▫️Give me music, sunshine, and a beach in regular doses and I’m fine▫️ I struggle with sticking to routines ▫️I like elephant
Your Market Value... is a fancy way of sharing the best version of YOU. You wouldn’t go on a date and list all of your negative qualities , talk crap about your past relationships would you? 😅 I hope not! So, you shouldn’t be doing that on a job interview. Although it’s difficult because sometimes your nerves get the best of you and you end up sharing unflattering aspects of yourself anyway. 🤷🏽♀️ This exercise will ensure you don’t do this. Action Steps: 1. Take the weekend to create answers to all of these questions. Really take the time to sit down and write them out. Grab tea or a sparkling water. Play some music and get in tune with what you have to offer professionally and personally to your next employer. As a therapist myself, I’m often asked by friends and family, “How do I find a “good” therapist?”. Now, we all know the word “good” is a relative term..What’s “good” to one person can be awful for another and visa-versa. So, my response usually sounds a bit like this: Seek what will work for YOU - not what has worked for everyone else. A positive therapeutic experience is largely influenced by personalities and preference. Ultimately, whether or not you deem a Therapist “good”, depends on the relationship you have with the therapist not necessarily solely on the skill, technique or certifications of the therapist. 1)It’s important you as the potential client, first define what you’re looking for in a Therapy, as a result of Therapy; what are your goals(?) What do you want help with? what do you want to achieve in Therapy? 2) Research you potential therapist before setting up appointments with them; Google them, find out their areas of specialty, try and get a sense of their personality, and strengths and see if it aligns with what you’re looking for. 3) Ask for a free 15min consultation before committing. In a sense it’s like “interviewing” for a therapist. It’ll give you an opportunity to see what the first impression is like. This is your LIFE we’re talking about, your emotional well-being; It’s important you take the time to choose the best fit for YOU! Not to mention the financial piece- you don’t want to spend money on a process that’s not working for you! Had an awesome counselling session today. There were tears. And more came flowing as I processed them throughout the day. 💜 I tried to work but it just wasn't happening and I made peace that there was so much gold uncovered today that I didn't need to fill it with more stuff 💜 All from a dream dropped into my spirit which we unpacked. 🍃 Another piece of the puzzle unravelled, painfully peeled back and ready to process. It's a way to survive from the painful realisation that the one person (s) you trusted to believe in you...quite frankly.. crushed your confidence in a second. And boom. You gave your power away. And spent many years after feeling stuck and confused. Blaming yourself for being lazy...Blaming yourself for procrastinating. It's not about blaming the person that discredited us. A double dose of #wellnesswednesday because I think it’s really important to speak about emotional health for a quick minute. ⠀ ⠀ It is healthy to feel emotions. And it is healthy to express emotions in a healthy way and in a healthy environment. ⠀ ⠀ I know this time of year can be stressful, but also sheds some light on depression and seasonal depression. ⠀ ⠀ This doesn’t make you any less of a person, you just need a little extra support in the winter months. Being a Mental Health Therapist is my passion. I love what I do. Tonight, I spoke to a class of Oregon First Responders. Tomorrow, I will be speaking at Western Oregon University for their Pschopathology Class, on Mental Illness. I know both sides of the coin from being diagnosed 21 years ago with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Clinical Depression, PTSD, Trauma Induced Mania and Generalized Anxiety Disorder.......to being a licensed Mental Health Counselor, Today. Recovery from mental health struggles is possible. I am living proof. Due to an amazing psychiatrist and psychologist for the last 21 years, along with medication, talk therapy, faith and healthy coping skills, I became stable, have remained stable for 17 years. After being hospitalized for a month in 2002, due to severe depression and c-ptsd symptoms, that became the worst day and the best day of my life. God has continually healed me through medication and doctors and through my journey, my faith has grown stronger. My pain turned into my passion...a calling to help others who also are struggling, feeling all alone, hurting...isolated. So, because of my stability, I was able to finish my schooling and become a licensed therapist who specializes in Depression, Anxiety and Mood Disorders. Use your pain to fuel your passions when you can. Know that you are not alone. Know that most of the time, the healing is right in front of us as God uses people, just like you and I, to help heal each other.
