Let’s talk side dishes. . I’m sure most have now heard of “xiaochi” which means small eats, mostly related to street eats. But are you familiar with “xiao tsai”(小菜)?! . These “small dishes” are essentially appetizers and in many Taiwanese restaurants, it is often the first things you see. . You can order them or more often than not, you’d just grab them yourselves and gets tallied up in the end. . These dishes are simple and often served cold. Sometimes I get excited just by staring at them. Mother always has to stop me from getting every single dish... . I was so happy to be able to find these ingredients in London to make my own xiao tsai! I don’t even need a main, a bowl of rice and these four dishes, I’m a happy bunny. . - beancurd strips in sesame oil - braised kombu and dry tofu - braised tofu (Yes...I kind of like all thing tofu...just a bit) . 《台式小菜》 涼拌乾絲 · 滷海帶 滷豆乾 · 滷豆腐
What people are saying about Cambowan: “This is our go-to restaurant as we live only a few minutes away. We come here so often we have tried most of the items on their menu. Honestly all of them have been great, especially if you’re into spicy food. Our favorites are fish with pickled veggies, beef noodle soup, fried pork chop over rice, spicy chicken (don’t know what the English is), and the garlic pork belly slice appetizer (not sure what the English name is). I’ve brought a lot of friends to this place before and all have been impressed. Highly recommend if you’re in the area.” - Hai G.
Day 332: Favourite Hot Pot Restaurant in TaiChung . Today I got a throwback notification from Google Photo showing me what I was up to this same time last year 😮. . It was a picture album of a hotpot restaurant in TaiChung, Taiwan called 輕井澤 (Karuizawa Hotpot). After our first dining experience, this became my favourite hotpot restaurant in TaiChung. Looking at the picture and the food makes me want to go back again 🤤! . This place is like a local-gem, that is not advertised much but, well-known to locals and always full house. We had to book a few days in advance to secure a spot 😊. And rightly so because it was such a wonderful experience. Not only the interior is amazing, but the staff organisation, the sauces station, the staff services and the foods are all exceptionally coordinated 👍. . I wanted to take a picture of the sauces station but there were too many people standing around. So can't get a proper shot. However the sauces station is amazing, with a HUGE selection sauces and condiments. The combination is limitless! . The foods were superb. They have a great selection of soup bases, from herbal to numb&spicy, from chick flavour to tomato based. Then you add on the varieties of meats, noodles, and veges. They are all fresh and well-portioned. We almost 'roll' out of the restaurant, so full 😅! . One last comment is the beautiful interior design. The place feels so grand, feels like a modernised ancient-Chinese decor, with impressive water feature in the centre of the restaurant and a moat outside of the restaurant. What I experienced from other hotpot restaurants are that they are often stuffy due to the masses amount of steam from all tables. But this restaurant has exceptional ventilation, the air is crisp and filled with delicious food aroma. . Can't wait to visit this place again on our next return 😊! . Have you been to Taiwan? What was your favourite place😁? . #day332#hotpot#taichung#restaurant#taiwanesecuisine
