Clemson it is!!! You guys know how much I love to see the youth do well, especially our young men with all the odds against them 🙌🏾 Congrats Momma @teeillz you did well! Early this year my man asked me to help get his body right for the 2018 football season. I’m always a little skeptical about a college student athlete being able to follow a detailed meal and training plan. I was a small college athlete and understand time, money, and college life in general, are tough obstacles to overcome when trying to stick to a plan. @sally_v52 killed it, leaning down 20lbs and then putting on 10 solid lbs before the 2018 season. This fall he earned 1st team All-conference honors in arguably the most competitive conference in D2 football. Even tho I bleed Bearcat green, I couldn’t be happier for my Loper friend! 🎓Oh hey, I graduated! (On November 5th). Didn’t get the chance to post photos because I’m running around working 5 different jobs right now (none of which are related to my degree by the way) #postgradlife . 🎉 I have a team of people who helped me get this fancy piece of paper. ❤️ There were so many times that I didn’t think I would make it across that stage. At least once a semester I would call a friend crying and consider dropping out. 💧 #uoftears 💧 Add a brain injury into that mix, trauma, and and a debilitating amount of stress. Even with a part time courseload in my last year, things were pretty rocky. 🗻 I made it through-a little bit of a surprise. I was the first person to cross the stage last Monday. I graduated with distinction from an honours BA. I am so proud of my accomplishments. I worked fiercely for every inch of that damn degree. 📜 I did it, but it cost me a lot (student debt aside). 🌪 If I were to do another degree (and chances are I will) I’ll approach it with more intentionality towards health. With boundaries and practices that serve me. With the mindset that I’m human and that my worth is not tied to my ability to produce. With rest, balance, and joy as central to my academic practices. With a community mindset over a neoliberal drive. With stronger mental health support and less expectations of perfection. 💁🏼♀️ My next degree I intend to do as a human being. A messy, imperfect, extension needing, sometimes anxious, usually well rested, diversely supported, fairly healthy, always good-enough, human being. If I’ve learned anything valuable in the acquisition of this paper, it’s that being honest about and present in your humanity is worth so much more than any piece of paper. 🎓 📸 Thanks to @orusswur for the deeply meaningful family photos.
