"STRENGTH IS HEALTH"  Did you know that there is a long history in strength training? The wooden device you see in the picture above is called "health lift" and was designed somewhere around the 1850's by a physician called George Barker Windship who also coined the quite nice phrase "STRENGTH IS HEALTH". 💣Felipe es mi ídolo. Los que siguen mi cuenta lo saben, porque no dejo de publicar videos de sus épicas hazañas 💣Pero no estoy vanagloriándolo por sus capacidades. Nadie es mejor que nadie por ser más fuerte, aunque tenga 80 años y haga cosas de un chaval de 25 💣Lo que me maravilla de él es su persistencia, ilusión y coraje. Eso es lo que le ha llevado a este momento. Yo solo le he acompañado para allanarle el camino 💣Y es que llevaba meses pidiéndome usar la rueda abdominal, para hacer el “roll out”. Varias veces le dije que no, porque reconozco que tenía miedo de que fuera un reto demasiado exigente para él 💣Pero también sabía que no podría esquivar su petición por mucho tiempo, así que nos pusimos manos a la obra para mejorar lo máximo posible su control motor y su estabilidad del core 💣Nuestro objetivo, superar el ejercicio antes de acabar el año 📽 A 4 días de cerrar 2018, llegó el momento de cumplir la promesa. Only a few GS days before Christmas, so here are yesterday’s efforts: 2(20kg)TALC for a total of 6.5 min. Followed by 6 minutes of OAJerk “Sprints” which ended up being not at all a sprint. This is all still amazingly difficult to build capacity with, especially when you’re acting as your own programmer and aren’t yet gearing up for specific effort, such as a comp. Still, I feel that I am getting slightly better in both capacity and in #tekuniku . These are both related, of course, but also my increasing leg strength is helping the “bump” and fixation, which has always been a problem, much more noticeable with anything over 20kg. Felt pretty good on Friday. These are both the final sets of 5’ LC followed by 5’ Snatch. The LC was 2, 2, 1, but still all felt good throughout with what is, for me, a heavier weight. Progressing is all right. The Snatch is feeling relatively “easy” although I am not yet able to safely go up in weight, so will try to add some volume/fitness with this movement. 🏅Felipe tenía 2 opciones: hacer algo de gimnasia suave en una piscina, opción que le habían recomendado debido a su artritis, o entrenar la fuerza conmigo. 🏅La primera opción le garantizaba seguridad, ya que es muy poco probable que se haga daño haciendo ejercicio en el agua. Puede que incluso se lo pasara bien, moviéndose al ritmo del último hit de Enrique Iglesias, en la clase de Zumba Acuático… 🏅La segunda opción, suponía aprender los patrones básicos de movimiento, para poco a poco, comenzar a levantar cargas cada vez más pesadas. A priori, suena mucho más aburrido y estresante que mover las caderas en la piscina. 🏅Pero Felipe está acostumbrado a trabajar duro, para lograr sus metas en la vida, por lo que decidió aceptar el reto conmigo. Después de explicarle que la tensión mecánica era indispensable para mejorar su densidad mineral ósea, nos pusimos manos a la obra. 🏅El primer paso era aprender a moverse desde una bisagra de cadera, y fortalecer el core, lo suficiente, como para ir añadiendo cargas cada vez más pesadas. 🏅Al principio le dominaba el miedo a hacerse daño. Luego, fue cogiendo confianza y su motivación creció. Ahora, Felipe me pide en cada sesión ir un paso más allá. 👊Paco ya superó los 60. 👊Cuando empezó conmigo, tenía una forma física envidiable, pero quería mejorar su fuerza 👊Después de unas semanas de tecnificación, cambiamos los clásicos ejercicios uniarticulares en máquinas por ejercicios poliarticulares como el peso muerto, la sentadilla y el press de banca. A esto, le unimos el trabajo unilateral, como la sentadilla búlgara o los press y remos a una mano 👊En pocos meses mejoró considerablemente sus niveles de fuerza e hipertrofia 👊Ahora Paco tiene otro objetivo en mente: bajar algo de peso y mejorar su densidad mitocondrial. Dejó de fumar y le preocupa aumentar más su peso y tener problemas cardiovasculares 👊Para ello, vamos a incluir trabajo de alta intensidad. Pero no el clásico “no pain no gain”, típico de mentes simplistas q piensan q siempre "más es mejor” a cualquier precio 👊Su alta intensidad será una combinación de ejercicios q Paco domina, con un volumen ligeramente superior a los modelos comerciales de HIIT, para compensar el descenso de intensidad, adaptado a su edad y capacidades ▶️Video 1. EDT: entrenamiento por densidad. Reducimos la carga de los principales ejercicios poliarticulares y realizamos 5 repeticiones de c/uno durante 15 minutos, tratando de descansar lo menos posible ▶️Video 2. AMRAP: 1 minuto de caminata con pendiente / 25 battle rope / 50 saltos. Repetir durante 10 minutos, todas las series posibles ▶️Video 3. 30/20/10: elegimos un ejercicio en el q podamos variar la frecuencia, como bici o carrera. En este caso decidimos boxear. 30sg ligero, 20sg intermedio, 10sg intenso. Nice, but windy, day so had to go outside to practice with my new-and-improved adjustable Meels. The plastic bottle covering the weights makes them far less painful when they bump my head or back. Technique is still not too smooth (rather tricksy to handle). However, I am really happy the way my shoulders are getting ever more mobile, triceps more flexible, etc.. I’m not sure if this is a result of all the work I put into the shoulder health in general — which has been a lot — or because I have begun training with meel and gada this year. 💪Hace poco colgué un video en el cual, mi madre entrenaba la fuerza a partir de patrones básicos de movimiento. 💪Era una muestra de que se puede entrenar bien a cualquier edad, siempre y cuando se respeten las características morfológicas y las limitaciones físicas del individuo. 💪Si hubiera sido por algunos diagnósticos al analizar su espalda, se habría limitado a ejercitarse sentada en máquinas de gimnasio, o a hacer aquagym. 💪Por supuesto, la genética tiene bastante que ver, así como la experiencia deportiva, y es que ella nació con una movilidad privilegiada, que le ha permitido avanzar en las sesiones de fuerza sin demasiado problema. 💪Pero cualquiera puede beneficiarse de una mejora de la salud, sea cual sea su edad, con un programa de fuerza bien planificado. 💪En el ejemplo de hoy, tenemos a Felipe, a punto de cumplir 80 años. El podría haberse apuntado a aquaerobic, y remojarse en una piscina mientras se mueve a ritmo de reguetón, pero sus hijas lo convencieron para que entrenara conmigo. ▶️Circuito con patrones básicos de movimiento: ▶️ Sentadilla a cajón, cada día un poquito más profunda ▶️ Remo con polea, ya nos queda menos para ir a por el remo en suspensión ▶️ Flexiones, bajando cada vez más la altura del apoyo de manos. ▶️ Core anti extensión, en este caso, un deadbug básico ▶️ Bisagra de cadera, ¡pronto iremos a por su primer peso muerto! ✔ Primero nos enfocamos en ir aumentando progresivamente el volumen (total de series y repeticiones), para después ir subiendo la carga poco a poco. ✔ Lo fácil habría sido entrenar sentados cómodamente en máquinas.
