STRENGTH AT LENGTH: The Nordic Curl or fall is a fantastic example of an exercise that is attempting to create strength at length. This is a physical property that is vital for the sport of gymnastics in order to be able to create, hold & display key shapes. - - The Nordic Curl is an exercise that focusses on the eccentric action of the hamstrings. You can see in the video the athlete is trying to hold & control the fall as long as possible and after a little encouragement from my self you can see a better attempt on the second rep. Now that the MRI results are back, it looks like the lower body sessions will be driven purely by rehab for quite a while. Today our HQ team were extremely lucky to get to spend the morning honing their skills and learning from the very knowledgeable John Contreras from @rtr_physio  We spoke of the many ways that Pilates informed exercises can be translated to our clients and the athlete population.  We also learnt how we can focus our programs towards our clients goals so they can keep improving their function, Quality of Life and performance.  Building the skills of our instructors so we can keep providing you with the very best care is a big focus at HQ. And this workshop has been on our to do list for a while now. Sprungkrafttraining hat viele Faktoren  Eine davon ist die Technik. Angefangen mit der Kröperhaltung und Spannung.  Anlauftechnik und Geschwindigkeit, penultimatestep (der vorletzte Schritt), absprungphase (Winkel), Armschwung und Flugphase.  An jeder dieser einzelnen Phasen kann man sich immer mehr verbessern und einpaar cm in Sprungkraft dazugewinnen.  Daher lohnt es sich sehr daran zu arbeiten. Ich mach das gerne an kleineren Basketballkörben wie hier im Video. Gleichzeitig probiere ich neue Dunks aus, was die Koordination verbessert als aufwärmphase.  Doch dann muss man das auch trennen und zwar nur abspringen ohne Basketball und versuchen immer die Technik fließender, sauberer und explosiver oder Schneller auszuführen. Training age is not well known but very important, often overlooked, and is defined as the period of time you have exercised consistently e.g. weeks, months, or years. 📝  this is not biological age; you are never too old to exercise and the research supports significant positive outcomes such as improved muscle mass, bone density, and independence in older humans taking up exercise.  Many studies have demonstrated there are different needs required for best improvements in exercise performance dependant upon training age.  If you are new to exercise 👶 then frequent but low intensity exercise is for you. Focus should be on getting into the habit of exercise and learning the techniques. But advanced training age 👵 requires at times higher intensities and volumes with less frequency to improve performance. Focus should be on quantifying performance capacity and then applying a strategic exercise intervention to actualise significant improvements. Generally speaking results come faster and easier to beginners. Advanced participants require specific and specialised guidance to continually increase performance, and improvements are smaller compared to beginners.  Are we talking about athletes? No and yes! We work with many folks of different needs 😀 But remember, by focusing on what you can do and not what you look like, you are more likely to sustain your exercise habits and ultimately be successful. Just check out a bunch of athletes and you will see what we mean. They can do amazing things and they look great because they have sustained exercise habits over a significant period of time.  However, even the most advanced athlete will not perform optimally if their energy balance is poor. And they know it's poor because it's monitored. That leads us to the next post in the series which will be about energy balance. This is fundamental to your progression, performance, and health success so don't miss it. Hip belt squats are one of the best accessory movements for building huge squats, and huge legs, while working around pain and injuries. But they're rarely seen outside of specialist powerlifitng and bodybuilding gyms.  Hip belt squats are more of a quad dominant movement pattern, so it's important to include some posterior chain work. Kettlebell swings are a great exercise! Pretty versatile as well! They’re great for developing a stronger/more powerful hip extension and also work well in conditioning circuits. . The main thing to remember with these, is that they’re a hinge/posterior chain exercise. You want to keep your shins vertical and push your hips back, this will load up your posterior chain (glutes/hamstrings). Lower body exercises use a lot of muscle mass and burn a ton of calories. But most of the movements you commonly see are things like squats, leg press, deadlifts, hip thrusts, RDLs (Bilateral movement) Split-stance and single-leg exercises ( unilateral) teach you to stabilize and control your body effectively. lunges strengthen your lower body, tissues, legs, glutes, etc.It is important to practice lunges in proper posture.Lunges helps in achieving proper body balance and coordination. Improves Strength, stability and mobility. Lower loading helps reducing spine stress.
Too many athletes show up to the gym and just do a random assortment of exercises, hoping they will get better... the chances of this working... it’s like buying a lottery ticket... who knows? 🤷‍♂️. . At the very least, have a plan prior to getting to the gym - write down what you’re going to do that day and then record loads, etc. . The best thing you could do? Find a good strength and conditioning coach! . A structured program will decrease the likelihood of you getting injured and likely improve your sporting performance... if that’s not a worthwhile investment, I dunno what is! ✅Human beings operate from an “inner determines the outer” reality. 🔺No where is this more ‘microcosmic’ than when coaching/training athletes. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ ✅Considering that authentic coaching is ‘all about communication’, to tap into an athlete’s true potential, as a coach, it is ‘first’ about communicating with them in a way that allows the “commands to connect” so that they “buy in” to what you are expecting. 🔺No matter how “awesome” the program is that you’re “selling”, athletes (as most human beings) must be “sold on” not only the benefits but also the fact ‘you’, as coach, are “in it with them”. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ ✅Expectations must be ‘clarified’ to be ‘embraced’. This is a process, yet only due to the progressive nature of it, not because of compromise. 🔺Athletes desire ‘trust’ and trust comes from ‘consistency’ in spite of any opposition. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ 🛎As a coach, ‘your’ integrity (re: consistency) in your principles will take an athlete far beyond what ‘any’ program ‘without’ it could. 🔺Understand that athletes, and all individuals, respond best to ‘constructive’ input that can be relied upon rather than even the most “triple-blind-tested, scientifically-based, world-changing” program that is pitched with indifference. 🔺Developing ‘relationship’ with your athletes (and colleagues) is based purely on genuine communication. 👆🏼This is free of emotionally-determined, thin-skinned, people pleasing and is based on ‘empathy’, not ever “sympathy”. Breathing core activation and warm up. - These are my two favorite core exercises - the dead bug and Superman breathing. -  The dead bug is pretty funky looking but basically you challenge your core to keep your spine in neutral position by stretching your opposite arm and leg out as far as possible. Exhale firmly as you extend out, feeling the core lock down and the back press into the ground. Inhale the limbs back up! Repeat with alternating sides. Sets of 10 reps/side on these work well. - Superman breathing (or Wonder Woman breathing if you’re a lady!) are exactly what the sound like! You put your hands on your rib cage and breath in and out through the nose. The goal is to expand the ribs and activate all of the breathing muscles in the ribs and the diaphragm. Do a set of 10 of these before every workout to turn your sympathetic nervous system on! You cannot target specific areas of your body when it comes to fat loss! . Anyone who tells you they have the secret to losing fat from specific areas, such as your stomach or thighs, is lying! Fat essentially comes off the body as a whole and it happens differently for different people! . You can however train specific body parts, eg your abdominal muscles, and in doing so those muscles might get bigger, which may make them more visible, but you cannot specifically train to take fat off your stomach! . Having athletes hold a light weight out in front of them whilst they squat, as a counter-balance, is a great way to reinforce squat positioning; teaching the athlete to sit back and keep a more vertical torso. . This is a great exercise to use with athletes who are learning to squat, or a good warm-up exercise for more advanced lifters.
