#throwbackthursday to last summer ! This instrument is called a glovebox. It’s a big chamber that’s attached to a pump which helps create a vacuum chamber inside the box to remove all the oxygen and replace it with inert gases such as nitrogen and argon. This is done because a lot of chemicals we work with can be sensitive to air so putting them in the glovebox keeps them “fresh”. This time lapse features the process of degassing tert-butanol. Tert-butanol is a solid at room temperature which means it can trap a variety of gasses within itself. This isn’t good if you need it to be super pure for a reaction, so what we do is melt it so it releases the gasses into the airspace of the flask and then re-freeze it. Once frozen, we pull a vacuum on it to remove the gasses that are in the airspace of the flask. Then we freeze it again and repeat the process several times to try and remove as much of the gasses as possible. This timelapse shows the process of melting it to release the gasses ! This video shows the process of “drying” a product. Chemists usually run reactions in some type of volatile organic compound, and then evaporate most of the solvent off using a rotovap. However, the rotovap cant always remove all of the solvent so we have to connect our product to a hi-vac. This is basically a system that’s connected to a pump and creates a vacuum within your flask to vacuum/remove the leftover solvent. This is why you see the oily product in the flask bubbling, this is actually the solvent being vacuumed off! Today’s post features a technique called liquid-liquid extraction. This is what chemists use to extract products after a reaction has finished and been worked up. Once the reaction of choice is done you have to quench/stop the reaction. This can involve using aqueous (water based) mixture of the desired quencher. This now means that your reaction has an aqueous (water) layer and an organic layer (solvent) and you have to separate them because you don’t want water in your product solution for a variety of reasons. So we separate them using a separation funnel, which turns your mixture into two layers an aqueous one and an organic one. This phenomenon is observed because organic solvents have different densities than that of water, so depending on the solvent that’s used the desired organic layer will either be the top or bottom layer. In this case, the solvent being used is dichloromethane which is more dense than water, so it is the brown bottom layer. This is how we set up a reaction to reflux. Refluxing allows you to heat up reactions to high temperatures, which speeds them up, without losing any solvent (solvents are volatile organic compounds chemists use to run reactions in). Basically how it works is you put  a hearing mantle, sand bath, or an oil bath on top of your hot plate (in this photo my reactions are sitting in oil baths) and then stick your reaction flask into the heated medium of choice. Then what happens is that the oil baths heat up your solvent of choice until it starts boiling off (every solvent has a different boiling point, so we choose our solvent based on how hot we want the reaction to get) once it begins boiling, the solvent molecules go from the liquid phase to the gas phase, and in order to prevent all the solvent from evaporating and letting the reaction run dry, we attach what’s called a condenser to our flasks (this is the glass tube piece attached to the flask  with the cool designs inside). The condenser has two tubes connected to it, one for cold water to run into it and the second for the water to come out. So as the solvent molecules vaporize and turn to a hot gas they hit the inner compartment of the condenser where the cold water is running which makes the gas condense back to a liquid and drop back down into the reaction flask. This allows for continuous heating at high temps without the loss of solvent! I made this one a while ago and I can’t talk about the reactions specifically but I’m basically just adding reagents to my reaction flask that has my starting material in solution. A cool surprise in lab today! I did a 19g purification of my compound and these are some of the fractions! My compound is an oil so those rings that are slightly above the solvent level that you see moving are actually my product! This happens because the solvent mixture was composed of ethyl acetate and hexanes which are volatile organic compounds. This means that they evaporate quickly at room temperature. Since my last Birch Reduction post was so popular I decided to walk y’all through the process. The first part of the video shows the ammonia condensing, since it was a large scale Birch (20g) we needed to condense 2 liters of ammonia which took about 2 hours ! The next part where the solution is a mix of yellow and blue is the process of the lithium metal dissolving, it turns fully blue once it’s all in solution, and the last color change shows the reaction happening. I didn’t include the quench (it just goes from yellow to white) because we saw that in my other post ! Filtering off some manganese dioxide after an oxidation reaction ! Dichloromethane is the solvent we are using to solubilize our product without solubilizing the oxidant, which is why all the black junk stays within the filter paper and clear solvent filters through!  The last frame shows crystals of ice that result from the process of dichloromethane evaporating which cools the water vapor in the air until it condenses and eventually freezes to make these pretty crystals ! Today’s post features an oxidation using the White Chen Catalyst! The first video shows a timelapse of using a syringe pump to add the catalyst. Syringe pumps are used as a way to control the rate at which a reagent is added to a reaction! This allows for reproducible results every time you try the experiment. The second frame features a timelapse of removing the catalyst from the reaction mix using a Celite plug which traps the catalyst, you can see a yellow layer forming which is the catalyst being trapped. The third frame features the structure of the White Chen catalyst, and the last frame features the types of transformations the catalyst has been reported to facilitate.
