We planted #oregano as a multifunctional #groundcover under several #persimmon fruit trees at an urban orchard. This multifunctional approach is applied to all our edible gardens. The oregano is edible and medicinal, produces attractive flowers, minimizes and out competes weeds, improves soil fertility, and we find the aromatic herb helps deter critter pressures. Clever combinations of useful plants can be more attractive, higher yield, and more sustainable. #permaculture #urbanpermaculture #stackingfunctions #workwithnature
To take the leap of faith and walk down the path a regenerating our land, our farm and the way we interact with these things. It take trust, it take intuitiveness and a deeper connection to your enviroment. When the plants speak. Listen. Cannabis will let you know. The regenerative cannabis farm has trust in nature, trust in soil, trust in companions. Not all cannabis is created equal. Same with the food we eat. Find farms, brands, markets you trust. Ask how they are closing loops, ask how they treat their workers. We are proud to work with #sunandearth Certified cause they are asking us farms the right questions. Spent the last few weeks banging out this backyard redesign project along with my partner and good friend Andres over at @crookeda.cultiv8rs ⛏️ This house had been on the market for sometime and prior to that the landscape had been neglected for quite a while so it took quite a bit of work to get things back into shape. We salvaged what plants we could but removed any dead and dying plants along with some of the non-natives and poorly placed trees. We were able to use some of the felled trees as landscape feature and as bee habitat 🐝 A big focus of this project was the removal of the old brick paver patio which was unsightly and didn't allow water to be absorbed quickly. We removed a good portion of the brick and replaced with a smaller flagstone patio using materials already on site. We then made changes throughout the backyard adding raised pathways, infiltration basins, and gradual slopes and contours that will further act to slow down water as it moves through the landscape. Finally, each basin was lined with wood chip mulch and planted with a variety of native plants designed to attract hummingbirds and pollinators 🦋 • • • • • #sustainablegardening #sustainablefarming #sustainableliving #sustainability #goinggreen #tucson #tucsonaz #arizona #az #instagramaz #igerstucson #madeintucson #theoldpueblo #520 #thisistucson #whyilovewhereilive #permaculture #grownative #stackingfunctions #regenerativeagriculture #foodforest #planttherain #permie #permies#waterharvesting #rainharvesting #rainwaterharvesting #harvesttherain #harvestingrain #planttherain #rainwater

This photo of the keyhole garden was taken last year when we had the brassicas and leafy crop rotation in there. This year, the keyhole bed will be hosting our fruits; we’re experimenting with different organic heirloom tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. We have also planted some pest-repelling nasturtiums and some nitrogen fixing peas to climb up the trellis that sits over the compost bin nestled in the centre of the bed that feeds the surrounding soil. . . . 🌿Although this vegetable garden appears to be your standard raised bed, there are many hidden functions designed into this tiny area. . . 🌿Good design is at the heart of Ground Culture. We combine tried and true traditional gardening principals along with innovative design concepts to offer a full range of gardening and edible landscaping services. Yesterday I posted an example of #stackingfunctions or #stackingyourlife - ideas born from the practices of #permaculture The ideas actually aren’t new, they’re actually old and not ideas but ways in which people’s living with more earth-based lifeways simply “do life”. This isn’t how most of us live these days so it seems to me that intellectualized systems tend to be born as a way to remember what it seems has been forgotten. So...what does this have to do with my kid and me playing while my coffee brews? Well stacking coffee brewing (a questionable need for sure) with needs both Gabe and I definitely need - movement, play and family (community). Spinning and falling down by choice (we were playing Ring Around the Rosey) are definitely NOT a skills we value - unless your a slap stick comedian I guess LOL - but check out how many different ways we moved that are out of the ordinary and perhaps even considered unsafe in some circles. Luckily neither of us got hurt we definitely laughed and we had some fun. Afterwards I thoroughly enjoyed my coffee and my son went and played by himself which gave me some free time to write this post. I’d say that’s a pretty good use of my time and his and it didn’t feel like “work” or “exercise”. I love a concept called #stackingfunctions or #stackingyourlife I’ve learned from both @fields_without_fences and @nutritiousmovement. It is an understanding that the ways we move can be sequenced in a way that serves various ends. Here’s a small example of what this might look like. All bodies require nutrition in the form of food and in the form of movement. Here, I’m making pancakes and moving my body through some yoga postures and general stretching movements #movementdoesnthavetobefancy. I’m changing my physical geometry in various ways and preparing breakfast. In one sense it may look like multitasking, but the difference is in seeing the multiple ways the movements I’m doing support a bigger ecology. Per Katy Bowman, ”...stacking your life and multitasking differ in how you approach trying to meet your various needs. Multitasking involves trying to accomplish many discreet tasks at once. Stacking your life involves the search for fewer tasks that meet multiple needs, which often requires that you’re clear on what your needs actually are. Once you identify your needs and which tasks best serve you, you can attend to, pay attention to, get involved in, and focus upon a single task at hand that serves multiple obligations.” I’m still in a process of whittling down and refining my true needs and how to best stack the functions inside of those needs, but I need to eat and move (as we all do) so for me this is a pretty easy place to start. What do you think?

Not only are the dwarf false indigo’s (Amorpha nana) blossoms stunning, it’s drought tolerant, loved by pollinators and a nitrogen fixer. #stackingfunctions #permaculture
I ran out of garden space after getting the melons, summer squash and cucumbers transplanted. That means I needed a place for the pumpkins and other winter squashes, so we are building one. Trying something new this year to deter mom’s cats from using these contoured raised beds as giant litter boxes. I’ve tried various forms of fencing that were often finicky and made access to planting and harvest difficult, and really didn’t always work. But these coffee burlap sacks are a slow biodegradable mulch with built in weed barrier, conserves water, protects the soil and apparently they also function as cat bedding....And it seems to be working so far! Look at how much our walnut tree has grown in 3 years! If you swipe to the left you’ll see me planting it at the beginning of 2016 - the first tree I planted in this garden and the one that will eventually be the tallest I don’t feed it, but I planted nitrogen fixers in its vicinity: lupin close up and silverberry a little further. They seem to be really helping, because the tree is doing great! It’s a remarkable tree because it has two varieties grafted on the same rootstock: ‘Broadview’ and ‘Red Donau’. This is often done with fruit trees but not with walnuts because they’re much more difficult to graft. This tree was an experiment from a specialised nursery.@deboonekamp which I was lucky to get because I was writing an article about them.
Love the delicate blossoms that valerian (Valeriana officinalis) sends up on a tall stalk. Started growing it strictly as an herb, but now appreciate its aesthetic beauty especially when planted amongst showier flowers like peonies and poppies. #valerian #herbgarden #cottagegarden #flowergarden #permaculture #stackingfunctions
Been doing some gardening at my rental place in town lately. Filling the front lawn with goodies so that I don't have to mow. Almost everything is edible or medicinal, and full of flowers for the pollinators as well. Calendula, sunflowers, dwarf marigold, hostas, mugwort, lilac, bee balm, Solomon's seal, valerian, chives, sorrel, dandelion, Jerusalem artichoke...so many goodies in my mini front yard food forest! Almost all gifts from the gardens of friends and family, or naturally occurring. . Today I layed down a couple of patches of hardwood shavings with some wine cap mushroom spawn, both from local friends. First time trying to grow them, but I am told it is pretty easy. Excited to see it all grow, and eventually harvest! The large old maple, Mrs. Knobby, already produces fall oysters on a dead burl at its base. #growfoodnotlawns #foodisfree #urbanfoodforest #permaculture #gardening #lawncare #feedthebees #pollinatorgarden #stackingfunctions #settheexample #mycology #mushroompropagation #mushroomspawn
Stacking functions: a cornerstone of Permaculture design. Here we are using our chickens (which admittedly we are posting about a lot recently!) to clear out poison ivy! Flash freezing 3 cookie sheets worth of garden strawberries every day in addition to eating all we can consume fresh. I estimate we’re harvesting roughly $50 of organic strawberries daily - maybe more? 🤷🏼‍♀️ All that from 20 parent plants which have been encouraged to take over as we transition to a perennial food system. Contrast: 1st video after and 2nd before...carving forests from bush, reduces fire risk by bringing down dead and overgrowth for the new layer for topsoil. It’s moisture holding, microorganism harboring, canopy creating, and provides new understory... We are rewriting the story. We know that by taking care of the trees already standing, we will bring more moisture from the air into the soil. People get caught up in planting things. What if we also took as much time and focus taking care of what’s here to thrive? How much food is already in the landscape? How do you use what you already have? . . . #silvaculture #chopanddrop #permaculture #landregeneration #re3generation @treepeople_org @polyfacefarm @wildwillowfarm @kisstheground @livingearthsystems #fireprevention #socalfires #calfire #stackingfunctions @stackingfunctions #tendingthewild #jamulfireprevention #jamul #sdfire
Yesterday in my stories I talked about what a difficult season this has been so far for our kitchen garden because of the drought combined with several late frosts. Luckily, our food forest is much more resilient (despite requiring just a fraction of the work) and it’s lovelier than ever! 🐸 Thank you for all your kind messages after I talked yesterday about the extreme weather that was headed our way! It seems we were lucky and the only thing that happened was strong winds around midnight- fortunately no tornadoes and no hail!
Found gigantic morels while weeding out the hoophouse beds. #stackingfunctions even if by accident! This patch and a few more were among the weeds that had grown up around the cardboard we stacked out of the wind throughout the winter. What makes a mushroom shroom? Oh man, what a couple of tiresome and inspiring weeks. There are a lot of photos in this post, but I am so proud of my Mom Terri McBroom, and myself for what we accomplished in a couple of days. It truly is a demonstration of the saying "if there is a will there is a way". We got a hook up from a costumer at the greenhouse the other day for some untreated 5 by 6's, and got a trailer (or two) full and decided that because we don't have time to make a garden at home, that we would make one at the greenhouse. This is an idea we had already mulled around, and decide why not, and to go for it full force. We built and planted four beds in two days, packed full of veggies, and herbs. There is a video of my Mom breaking the board with her skidster, when we realized we couldn't cut all the way through even cutting around all four sides, but we found a way to accomplish our task, with some machine muscle (thank goodness for this machine, it make our life so much easier in many ways). We did some really jntense companion planting to really maximize on the small space that we have available to us. There are too many to list individually without being excessive, so there are photos of the tags of everything that was planted. We have already had a couple of small harvests of salad greens, and green onions. We are so excited for the harvests to come, as well as the chance to share different styles and techniques of planting with our customers within this community. To hopefully inspire others to push the boundaries of what can be done, and to create something that others would think is imposible. More pictures to come of the finished product. #permaculture#stackingfunctions#maximizingspace#lovingmybeautifullife#feedthebellyfeedthesoul.
“Crickets in the thickets don’t take tickets for their sound symphonies...it’s for free, protect what’s free...like me, Don’t spray please, we’re not RoundUp Ready...” . A U-in-I verse from a song I wrote...the grasshopper above is from a regrown little gem of Cypress Tree Forest/swap next to some of the last remaining #everglades in #westpalmbeach . Did you know that #glyphosate, the #persistentpesticide and the main ingredient in RoundUp, sprayed in megatons!!!! is found in air, rain, water, most food, animals, most humans, has been dilibertly sold as safe when known to be harmful from the get go in 1980s. Yes Government officials and science has been bought and sold again to poison the population. Glyphosate attacks your gut bacteria which is linked to all sorts of diseases...from gluten intolerance on the light side to cancers, dementia on the heavier side. The @_world_health_organization_ finally had the backbone to call it a “probable carcinogen.” Monsanto fought to back them down. Bayer bought Monsanto and now have to quickly say such a “bad boy!!” Expose a few people and then get back to business. Corporations have little accountability for the actions of the fiction PERSON, because corporations are incorporated, subject to law, but not natural humans. So, you can hang the corporate entity out to dry and have little accountability for the ills the employees carry out on behalf of the corporate PERSON. Truth be told, Bayer was started by ex-Nazi funding IG Farben that was disbanded because of the Numerberg Trails post WWII. Population eugenics has been the game, keeping people enslaved through sickness, requiring the same companies to give the medicine, genocide by atrophy, remember when they gave HIV contaminated Hemophiliac medicine to 30,000 black people in the USA back in the 90s? Who went to jail? The story is continuing. I am saying people need to go to jail. Obama appointed Tom Vislak and Michael Taylor to USDA and FDA

perhaps it is like this for you, too, that everywhere you look now, you’re wondering how life is going to change in the face of climate disaster and transition from fossil fuels. wondering how we might adapt. i looked out to our little courtyard and thought it again myself, this morning. perhaps the courtyard has ideas. . the coldframe is a simple structure for growing food resilient to weather, extending the season, and can be used as a hotbed with animal manures. the energy is mostly embodied in glass, but reclaimed windows are abundant. our local glassmaker has invented an astonishingly efficient kiln, too. . bamboo grows rapidly, harvested for fuel, fibre, and food for all of the farm animals and ourselves. the plum tree gives fruit, shade, predator protection, leaf mulch. the eleagnus beside it fixes nitrogen and gives fruit. the lavender, lilac, rose, mallow and flowering shrubs all around deepen the soil too, while cooling it, giving harvests, providing nectar sources to insects, homes for birdlife. there’s a tea camelia growing with mint and lemon balm for our tea cupboard. raspberry, josta, currant, gooseberry propogations will go in next. we mulch with rich duckhouse bedding to hold water. . the cat keeps rats and rabbits from overtaking the farm, protects our flocks and is himself a rescue and neutered. he’s the family healer. . the patio concrete is energy intensive, impermeable, prone to extreme temperatures, and rushes precious water to a drain. when it fails, best replace it with mulches, microclovers, local stone or brick. natural building techniques are needed. the stone wall provides heat to ripen cucumbers and sweet potatoes. . the chiminea holds potential in combination with traditional charcoal production. paired with heritage tools like a dutch oven it may be the warm season counterpart to the wood stove, like rocket stoves, cob ovens. gathering around to cook from scratch outdoors using local wood energy is a gratifying, ancient

Tomorrow is the best day of the year for our breeders.
