One of our first tasks in writing a story is to establish empathy for the main character. In his book The Secrets of Story, Matt Bird details what he calls the "moment of humanity". It's the first moment where we see that this character is human. Whether through victimization, aspiration, or humanistic qualities, we want to see the ways in which we can relate to this character. Matt Bird notes a moment of humanity involving compassion: "Aladdin has a great song about being a fun-loving thief, but after he gets away with his bread, he reluctantly lets starving kids beg it off him. Blake Snyder cites this as a clear-cut ‘save-the-cat’ moment, but it’s important to point out that it only works because it’s out of character. If he had stolen the bread for the kids, we wouldn’t like him as much. That would be more sympathetic but less compelling." This creates a clear moment of inner conflict where he desires to eat the bread but he also desires to help the kids because he's got a bit of compassion in him too. This inner conflict is fundamentally a pull between selfishness and selflessness. We can all relate to inner conflict and so it creates great empathy. To everyone involved in this : Thank You! Thank you for bringing these stories forward. For making me humble myself. For educating and inspiring me to further my own knowledge. For making me laugh and cry. For showing me the similarities and differences between Black and White People and the ways in which this honesty and realisation is important to celebrate and navigate. For deepening my understanding of The Windrush Generation and how difficult it would have been to assimilate into this system of White Supremacy. For reminding me exactly where my ‘London’ slang comes from and how much life and meaning is behind these words and phrases. For affirming my fire to make sure I always fight in solidarity. All this to say - and it wasn’t made just ‘for me’ ! @k_kweiarmah Thank You 👑✊🏻👑 @BBC More of this please 🙏🏻 #soongonewindrush#windrush#bbc#writing#screenwriter#power#performance#moved#inspired#actor#gratitude#reallife#support 🖤
A little #tbt action because apparently I posted this 2 years ago today, just a couple of weeks before we started filming @strangecompanytv. Look at these young, bright-eyed dreamers. They (with the help of so many others not pictured) went on to create something really special ❤️
We are now running our own film fest!!!! Winners will have chance of online distribution in japan! I am so happy to secure this deal so even a small fest like ours can be of any substance and significance
Non-linear storytelling isn’t easy but Joe Edgerton’s adaption of Garrard Conley’s 2016 memoir ‘Boy Erased’ makes it appear as though it is. Lucas Hedges appears to be carving out a good niche for himself after ‘Manchester By The Sea’, Lady Bird’, ‘Three Billboards...’ and now ‘Boy Erased’. I’ll certainly be checking out Ben Is Back and Mid90s. Garrard Conley’s story is a painful one, to have gone through what he did at a young age, but the film is very well crafted. I’m surprised it hasn’t been nominated for more awards. Danny Bensi’s and Saunder Jurriaans’ music are alone worth the experience.
