Day 84 *World Tuberculosis Day; Managing tuberculosis in people who use and inject illicit drugs* People who use and inject illicit drugs are at high risk of contracting tuberculosis, whether or not they are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Illicit drug use is often associated with alcoholism, which also increases the risk of becoming infected with tuberculosis and of developing active tuberculosis. It also complicates tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment. Smoking increases the risk of contracting tuberculosis (TB), increases the risk of recurrent TB and impairs the response to treatment of the disease. The prevention, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis among people who use illicit drugs have been neglected and require immediate attention. #365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse

Day 83 *DRUG FACILITATED SEXUAL ASSAULT; THE RAPE OF CONVENIENCE* Break the silence! It is a well established fact, we live in the part of the world where people can do anything for money but it is astounding how sexual predators can go any length to satisfy their sexual pleasure regardless of the willingness of the victim. Rape is usually carried out against a person who is incapable of giving a valid consent; either an unconscious or an under aged victim. Recently, incapacitating agents has been known to be used on victims. They are known as Date Rape Drugs (DRP). DRP when administered on the victim incapacities them and renders the victim vulnerable to a drug facilitated sexual assault RAPE. Most common DRPs are Rohypnol, ketamine, gama-hydroxybutyric acid e.t.c These drugs have quick effect and cause serious health problem which ranges from dizziness, nausea, inconsistent heart rhythmicity, shortness of breath, partial loss of memory, difficulty in moving or controlling the muscles i.e. difficulty in motor movements, seizures, loss of consciousness, to even death. #365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse #saynotorape

Day 82 *Epicenters of Nigeria's drug crisis; When the news mentions Nigeria and drug overdose in the same sentence, Kano, Abuja or both cities aren't omitted* Kano is known as the cultural centre of the north, and while strong conservative values are the law, and alcohol is now sold or consumed in public, the youth are ripping paper packs and finding euphoria at the bottom of Tutolin bottles. Drug dens are scattered all over the city. Abuja's status and underlying values demand a certain sort of discretion. A walk through an Abuja neighbourhood showed endless ripped paper packs and empty bottles of cough syrup and empty sachets of Nigeria's favourite opioid, Tramadol. In both cities, the drugs most commonly used, marijuana and codeine, are served from local sources, farms hidden in the surrounding hills and trucks laden with illegal cargo snaking their way in from the South. Overall, stiff measures are required to manage this epidemic in both cities, lest they could harbour more psychiatric homes in few years to come. #365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse

Day 81 *Epicenters of Nigeria's drug crisis; When the news mentions Nigeria and drug overdose in the same sentence, one of these cities is likely to follow.* Regardless of what city youre in, nowadays its nearly impossible to avoid reading, hearing or watching some bit of news with the words "drug abuse", "drug crisis", or more specifically, "tramadol" or "codeine" scribbled on the pages or muttered by a news host. Ranked number one is Lagos; the most likely city to hear about when someone on the news mentions Nigeria and drug overdose in the same sentence. In slums in Mushin and many of the city's most notorious inner communities, drug use is common. Opioids like Tramadol are heavily abused and, no thanks to an absence of regulation, it is far too easy to get drugs, either from unregistered pharmacies or traders who pack an assortment in rectangular boxes. #365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse #ndafw #ndlea #nafdac #sdgs #sdg3 @ojekay12 To be continued...

Day 80 *Present and future danger associated with drug abuse in Nigeria; All hopes are not lost, we will overcome!* The subject of Drug abuse among the teeming youths in Nigeria has generated heated debate in recent time. Like a thunderbolt, it has attracted interest from different groups, organizations, individuals, government ministries and agencies including the National Assembly. It may not be too much to speculate that there is not one of our tertiary educational institutions or even the primary/secondary ones, that is free of drug abusers. We will be deceiving ourselves to think or believe that the situation is limited in geography or age. But the good news is; The Nigerian Government has recognized the need to act fast on the subject matter and is leaving no stone unturned in eradicating drug abuse in Nigeria. We have a great strength in our unity as a nation, we have encountered and overcome a few challenges in the past decade; which did not break us. With continued concerted efforts, awareness and stiff measures, drug abuse will be effectively reduced to a zero level @NDLA @ojekay12 @yali_Africa @WHO #365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse #ndafw #ndlea #nafdac #sdgs #zero #sdg3 #youth2030

From @365days_fagi - Drug Abuse and its effect on character and personal developments in youth* The effects of drugs and alcohol on youths are obvious. They may act out, become violent, and get into verbal altercations or simply act like a different person. Drugs and alcohol can intensify behaviors. Take someone who has trouble with controlling his temper. Give him drugs or alcohol and he may become extremely violent. According to the United States Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Programs, adolescents who abuse substances are at risk for a wide variety of issues that may interfere with their development. The physical, social and psychological effects of adolescent substance abuse can have lasting consequences on the individual, and may interfere with a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. Young people who persistently abuse substances often experience an array of problems, including academic difficulties, health-related problems (including mental health), poor peer relationships. Additionally, there are consequences for family members, the community, and the entire society. #youth #adulthood #adolescent #sport #society#365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse #ndafw #ndlea #nafdac #sdgs #sdg3 *Substance use disorder is dangerous to the health and it cause pain for those around you. Day 78 *Unfortunate fall from stardom with many lessons to learn; Famous Athletes Who Have Battled Drug Addiction and Alcoholism II* Doping refers to an athlete's use of prohibited drugs or methods to improve training and sporting results. Steroids are the drugs that often come to mind when we talk about doping, but doping also includes an athlete's use of other forbidden drugs (such as stimulants, hormones, diuretics, narcotics and marijuana), use of forbidden methods. Former France international Samir Nasri was banned from football for six months for an anti-doping violation dating from 2016 Tour de France cyclist, Lance Armstrong had his medals stripped from him and banned for life after it was found he had been taking drugs to help his performance during this time. From @365days_fagi - Day 76 Intake of codeine by irascible persons; opioid abuse ultimately increases the rate of mental health symptoms* A promising study reveals that people who get angry easily should refrain from abusing drugs. Mental health concerns and addiction often overlap. You may already struggle with anger management issues. Addiction may create new ones. Lots of drugs change how we act and what we say. They change how our brains work and affect how we feel. They make us do things we’d never want to do while sober. They can bring out the worst in us and leave us feeling ashamed or alone. Opioid abuse can initiate or accelerate preexisting mental health issues Chronic opioid abuse can cause complex changes to mood and behavior Individuals with violent histories have less impulse control during opioid highs If you have easy mood swings, get irritated or angered easily, these are more reasons you should totally abstain from abusing drugs, the consequences and irrational behaviours displayed could be very fatal!. #365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse #ndafw #ndlea #nafdac #sdgs #sdg3 @Ojekay12

Day 75 *Irrational consequences of Alcohol consumption; Unpredictable effects could be disastrous* Even if a research on the effects of alcohol on human behaviour is being carried out consistently, we would be consistent in getting more and more similar complex results. Truth be told, if care is not taken, alcohol consumption will take a new trend and its short term effect would cost a lifetime damage A recent report from the daily UK mail has it that; a woman gave birth during a party in Russia - 'then threw the child in a dumpster so she could keep on boozing with friends'... One seem to wonder if this was a result of her uncontrollable yearn for alcohol or if she was unconscious. All the same, the effects of alcohol consumption are not pleasing, the state of being unconscious for some period is enough reason to fear its consequences and stay chaste from heavy drinking! #365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse

Day 74 Drug addiction and Mental breakdown: The Nigerian youths trapped. Author: Fajemisin Emmanuel A. (Emmafajems16@gmail.com) Our cosmic environment is filled with zombies – having various mental maladies. In this age, it’s noteworthy that we don’t allow empathy debar truth: that mental disorders (depression, madness) is holistically spiritual(metaphysical), but that it’s a consequence of a cause – Drug abuse (and addiction). According to Sahara reports 2018; there are about 40million mentally derailed Nigerians, and 85% of them are youths – with drugs abuse accounting for 80% of causes. Addiction to Cigarettes, Alcohol, Cocaine, Tramadol etc. can lead to depression and neuronal breakdown. The interplay of GABA and Glutamate coupled with Acetylcholinesterase are vital proteins that maintain mental function, but with excess drugs intake – they can be denatured, lose function and eventuality mental breakdown occurs. The brain is like a balloon: if you keep blowing dangerous drugs into it; it will burst and lose its usefulness. I don’t think we should continue this way; lets keep up the charge to curb Drug abuse amidst youths – the destiny of every youth is more than Drugs! #365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse #ndafw #ndlea #nafdac #sdgs #sdg3 @ojekay12

Day 73 Drugs are sold like groundnuts in Kano streets, CP Wakili cries out, vows to deal with perpetrators The Kano State Police Commissioner, Muhammad Wakili, has disclosed that hard drugs are being sold like groundnuts in the streets, warning the perpetrators to immediately stop the illicit act or face the wrath of “the new Sheriff in town.” Mr Wakili also disclosed that the command had declared a full-scale war on drug abuse which, according to him, has become a scourge in the state. The new CP stressed that he would not rest on his oars until he rids the state of drug peddlers, barons and other criminals. Mr Wakili’s dramatic gesticulation and affirmative tone in a video last year drew funny reactions on the Internet. “Drug abuse is prevalent in the society,” he said in the video. Kano state often tops the chart of drug abuse in the country. Insiders say the new commissioner of police has the commitment and capacity to tackle the menace in the state. Day 72 *Drug abuse on socio-emotional behaviour among secondary school students in northern Nigeria.* The abuse of drugs among youths has become a major national problem in Nigeria. The youth who are expected to be leaders of tomorrow have been rendered useless to themselves and the societies in which they live, due to the impact of drug on them, thus contributing to the increase in the number of psychiatric patients, street boys, school dropouts and delinquents. The socio-economic effects of drug abuse on students (Adolescents) are the development of psychological dependence when abusing a substance. Many substance abusers have “emotional and mental preoccupation with the drugs pleasurable effects”. These substances interfere with the brains pleasure neurotransmitter, dopamine, more is released when a person uses and abuse drug, which results in a happy feeling. The user enjoys the elation and boosts in energy from the substance and becomes obsessed with maintaining that level of pleasure. It is important that government policy, parents and school teachers make deliberate efforts to instill high moral standard in their children/students and ensure they monitor or advise them. #365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse

Day 71 It is regretful to find out in our society today that women are taking drugs. In fact, some of them can take 1000mg of tramadol at a time. Sadly, a research carried out on substance abuse in women suggested that, it is easier for men to withdraw from addiction than women because they are most times connected emotionally to anything they are involved with. The most painful part is, the drug does not have effect on their system alone but also on the life of the child they will give birth to. For instance, opoids e.g tramadol taken by women does not leave their system immediately, it is retained in the blood which carries food and other nutrients to the baby in their womb. This leads to respiratory disorders and mental dysfunction in the child. As a result, the innocent life will end up coming into the world with pains or end up dying. Also, withdrawal from opoids use result in the mother not getting her mind right to train and build up her child. PS: All ladies that are involved in taking drugs, we advice you to stop. The right decision you make will not only help you save your life, it will also help save the life of your innocent children. #365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse

Day 70 *The Nigerian music industry; Your favourite artists don’t need to get high before they make high quality music.* For many years, Nigerian artists have been throwing weed into their music, and their lungs. It’s almost generally accepted that musicians have to smoke weed. While there are a couple who don’t and tell you that nobody should, many others scream about it in the music and capture their smoking moments on social media. There has never been many clearly documented cases of artists expressly falling down and losing their lives to the use of marijuana. But Nigerian legend, Majek Fashek recently came out of rehab, after almost losing his life and career to alcohol and marijuana addiction. Pop singer Runtown in 2016 decided to stop smoking marijuana. Still, despite the growing awareness of the side effects and health concerns related to the abuse of marijuana, many popular musicians continue to not only use it, but also love to showcase the practice on their social media. In the music industry, these drugs are seen as creative necessities, which aid the discovery of inspiration. Despite all of this, many Nigerian musicians continue to abuse drugs as stimulant for creativity. And while the industry promotes it as a lifestyle and recording aid, it is totally unnecessary as it does more harm on the artists and the fans at large. #365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse

Day 69 *Substance abuse leads to mental dysfunction. Stop feeding the brain with dangerous things!* The effect of substances such as alcohol, cannabis, stimulants and others on the body is purely classified under neurological disorders. For instance, alcohol affects the level of certain neurotransmitters in the brain that makes the body and the mind feel okay. However, the after effect of this is a dysfunction in the mechanism of action of the neurotransmitter on the body system. That's why alcohol abusers have problems with their cognitive and psychological behaviours. PS: Substances won't give you joy or make you happy but they destroy the normal mechanisms of how your body works. And to withdraw from the substances takes a lot of pain. If you are into taking any substance abuse, please stop today. Don't give room for pain and madness. #365days_fagi #saynotodrugabuse
