Micro plastics have made their way into marine life. All plastic under 5mm is considered to be micro plastic. When transferred into the ocean, micro plastics stay present alongside plankton. Fish then eat the plankton and become contaminated. Either another predator or humans then eat the fish, resulting in plastic being consumed. Plastic pollution needs to stop. We’re not only harming the environment and ecosystems, we’re harming ourselves. By Tim Wyatt @the.independent ⠀⠀ (...) Sea levels have gone up an average of 10 to 20cm over the past century, but this has rapidly sped up in the last 20 years. Even small increases can cause devastation in coastal countries and communities, through habitat erosion, flooding and more powerful storm surges. ⠀⠀ The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has predicted the oceans worldwide could rise as much as 98cm by the end of the century, which would be high enough to swamp major cities across the world including Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, Osaka, Hong Kong and Miami. If the most pessimistic outcomes arise and the entire Greenland ice sheet melts, the sea would rise by a huge 700cm, enough to entirely submerge London. . . . (2/3) Regram from @putput.dk . . Climate change: Greenland ice sheet melting faster than at any time in last 400 years, researchers warn. By Tim Wyatt @the.independent ⠀⠀ (...) The Greenland ice sheet is a mile-thick layer of frozen water which melts back into liquid on the surface of the sheet during warm summer days. Meltwater then either runs off the sheet into the ocean, pushing up sea levels worldwide, or it refreezes, forming layers of densely packed ice over time. The scientists running the study used a drill longer than a traffic light pole to extract ice cores from the ice sheet itself, to examine what kind of melting took place as far back as the 17th century. This method provides much deeper historical evidence for how much melting is caused by climate change than the normal satellite images, which only date back to the 1970s. ⠀⠀ Matt Osman, a graduate student who also worked on the study, said: “We have had a sense that there’s been a great deal of melting in recent decades, but we previously had no basis for comparison with melt rates going further back in time. “By sampling ice, we were able to extend the satellite data by a factor of ten and get a clearer picture of just how extremely unusual melting has been in recent decades compared to the past.” And the results show that even small amounts of additional warming could cause a huge spike in ice sheet melting. Dr Das said this underlined how sensitive the Arctic ice was to climate change. . . . 👉🏻 Next post . . . #environment #green #eco #sustainability #ecofriendly #planetorplastic #plasticfree #reuse #reduce #upcycle #plasticpollution #zerowaste #noplastic #nowaste #lessplastic #plasticwaste #plasticfree #passonplastic #nomoreplastic #environment #saveouroceans #plasticpollutes #noplanetb #bethechange #savetheplanet #saynotoplastic #pollution #repost
Ice to polar bears is like land to humans. 🐻 . Polar bears spend most of their time on sheets of frozen ocean water. 🌊 . When the ice melts, the bears come on land and survive on stored fat until it refreezes. ❄️ . Longer iceless periods means those bears have to swim further to find solid ground, and spend longer times searching for food. 🐋 . Sea ice is a necessary aspect of life for the species to exist. ⚠️ . #climatechange #protectourplanet Artwork by @wildlifefirst

By Tim Wyatt @the.independent ⠀⠀ Greenland’s ice sheets are melting faster than at any time in the last 400 years, researchers have warned. A new study has found the Greenland melt is pushing up sea levels worldwide and is caused by global warming. The lead scientist on the paper, Dr Luke Trusel, said: “Melting of the Greenland ice sheet has gone into overdrive. “As a result, Greenland melt is adding to sea level more than any time during the last three-and-a-half centuries, if not thousands of years. “And increasing melt began around the same time as we started altering the atmosphere in the mid-1800s. ⠀⠀ Dr Trusel’s co-author, Dr Sarah Das, said that from a historical perspective “today’s melt rates are off the charts”.Compared to the start of the industrial era, 50 per cent more ice sheet meltwater is running off Greenland and into the Arctic Ocean today, she said. There has been a 30 per cent increase since the 20th century alone. “Rather than increasing steadily as the climate warms, Greenland will melt increasingly more and more for every degree of warming,” Dr Trusel said. “The melting and sea level rise we’ve observed already will be dwarfed by what may be expected in the future as the climate continues to warm.” . . . 👉🏻 Next post . . . #environment #green #eco #sustainability #ecofriendly #planetorplastic #plasticfree #reuse #reduce #upcycle #plasticpollution #zerowaste #noplastic #nowaste #lessplastic #plasticwaste #plasticfree #passonplastic #nomoreplastic #environment #saveouroceans #plasticpollutes #noplanetb #bethechange #savetheplanet #saynotoplastic #pollution #repost

Let’s trash talk? 😉🤔 I created this account a couple of years ago. At the time my intention for creating the account was initially and only to share bits and pieces from my travels. The handle “serenaseeks” was decided on simply because it sounded halfway decent in comparison to other names I was considering. Funny enough, it seems @serenaseeks has turned-out to be a handle quite fitting. Over the last few years my travels have offered up many situations where I found myself seeking solutions to what I was experiencing. To get specific on just one topic, the sight of smoldering rubbish piles in developing countries has always been concerning for me. How could this be okay, not only for our planet but also for the people in close proximity? Surely these people are breathing in all the toxic chemicals as they burn through the waste. Am I right? I’ve seen this many times in small villages in Fiji, Belize, Nepal and Mexico. The people of these communities are the most lovely and kindhearted humans and they can not be blamed for this practice. I assume it’s due to the lack of infrastructure needed to put such systems into place. So instead residents and governments resort to burning piles of their trash in the open; removing the garbage from the land but transferring it to the skies! I later read that 40 percent of the world’s waste may be dealt with in this way. 😧 To add to the matter, many of these piles are being burned on beaches. If you know anything at all about the ocean, you must know that the tide comes and goes. Which I am sorry to say, means any leftover garbage on the beach goes right-on-out into our beautiful oceans to chill with the life within them. So how do we solve this issue? My intention is not to focus on the problem but instead to be part of a movement for a solution. Does the solving begin within the already developed countries? Isn’t it our obligation to find the antidote for the plastics we are mass producing and

Think you can't make a global difference? 16 days ago I launched a pledge. That pledge was to ask 550 people to pick up 5 pieces of litter per day during 2019. Then by the end of the year together we will have collected over 1 million pieces. Just look how quickly this pledge has grown and in fact the running total as I type this is over 16,000 pieces. I am deeply humbled by everyone who is involved in this and who have signed the pledge. You are the heroes. Go do it and change the world too. 5ThingsClear.com/Pledge

Between 2014 and 2017 the world’s coral reefs went through the worst bleaching event in history - which researchers say is largely due to rising water temperatures. . Scientists believe that coral reefs worldwide could collapse as early as 2050 if current carbon dioxide (CO2) emission rates don’t slow down - partially due to increasing ocean acidification that occurs as a result of higher CO2 concentration (Australia's Climate Council Report). . Even though coral bleaching events have occurred over the past 400 years, the number of events has significantly increased since the 1800s, indicating that coral reefs are reaching a tipping point. However, saving reefs is not a pointless cause; coral conservation research effort has been steadily increasing and emerging findings have given researchers hope! . For example, a recent survey conducted off Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island, funded by Paul Allen’s family foundation as part of the 50 Reefs Initiative, suggests that some corals in the area are surprisingly healthy and may be less vulnerable to global warming than previously thought. Dr. Emma Kennedy, who led the research team, found that some specific coral species are in better shape now than they were in 2014 when originally surveyed. “It is unbelievably encouraging to experience reefs such as these,” she said. “It means we still have time to save some coral reefs.” . Considering that we might only have three decades left to save coral reefs from extinction, now is the time to continue to support and get involved in researching and protecting corals. Coral reefs support an estimated 25% of all known marine species and contribute around US$375 billion per year to the global economy. If they collapse, we collapse! It’s not too late - now is the time to get active and protect what you love! . 📷: @jim_abernethy . #saveouroceans #50reefs #indonesia #coralreef #nature #conservation #oceanlife #ocean #nakaweproject #bethegamechanger #change

This is the challenge! Great post by @planethugshop with @get_repost . . #10yearschallange is a great way to see the drastic changes that happened worldwide. #animalextinctions : It's estimated that between 0.01% and 0.1% of all species become extinct each year. Doesn't sound like much, right? There are around 2 million different species which will mean that around 200 to 2,000 species will be extinct each year! This means that in the last 10 years THOUSANDS of animals have become extinct. #deforestation : Last year, Amazon deforestation was at its highest levels after 10 years. Between August 1, 2017 and July 31, 2018 date shows that around 7900 square kilometers or 3050 square miles of rainforests were cleared. This is a 13.7% rise of kilometers cleared compared to the previous year. To give you a better perspective, the loss represents an area 134 times the size of Manhattan! Unfortunately, this year, in the first day in office, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stated that he will use his time in office to increase the access of extractive industries in the Amazon rainforest. Within hours of taking power, the new president transferred responsibility for recognizing indigenous lands to the ministry of agriculture who has ties to the agribusiness. This will result in a drastic increase in deforestation and violence against indigenous people. #climatechange : Antartica ice melt has accelerated three times as fast in the last 10 years. Ice loss in Antarctica has increased to 252 gigatons (a gigaton is one billion tons) per year. Not to mention #plasticconsumption. Did you know that 260 million tons of plastic is produced every year? Leave a comment below or tag a friend. Let's have our voices heard and take an opportunity to spread this important information! #beatplasticpollution #plasticpollutionprevention #refusereducereuserecycle #saveouroceans #lineinthesand #circulareconomy #sustainability #futureisclean

Repost from @_onegoodthingaday_ using @RepostRegramApp - Synthetic fabrics—all of which are forms of plastic—have become very popular in clothes worldwide. They are cheap to produce and versatile, but unfortunately they also leach an obscene amount of microplastics into the environment just by being washed (potentially thousands of plastic fibres per load). Aprendamos juntos! . . . . #plasticfreeperú#plasticfreeperúshop#planetorplastic#conciousconsumer#myzerowastelifestyle#limaperú#nomoreplastic#ecofriendlyliving#zerowastecollective#conciousliving#cottonbags#handmade#nomoreplastic#sustainable #sustainableproducts #consciousconsumer#planet#noplastic #planetorplastic #weloveourplanet #plasticfreeliving #environmentallyfriendly#singleuseplastic #plasticwaste #plasticpollution #saveourplanet #savetheplanet #saynotoplastic #recycle#saveouroceans

#repost @planethugshop (@get_repost) ・・・ #10yearschallenge is a great way to see the drastic changes that happened worldwide. #refusesingleuse #environment #climatechange #oceans #nature #saveouroceans #savetheearth #savetheplanete#ecofriendly #bethechange #planetorplastic #plasticaction #breakfreefromplastic #beatplasticpollution #cleanseas

As a sweets addict, it’s pretty hard to get your fix the eco-way. From Lindors to Ferreros, most sweets come in single portion, non-recyclable wrappers. The gift boxes with endless plastic seals and trays. So, I figure the somewhat better way of doing things (at least some of the time) is to rather choose slabs which are usually packaged in aluminum foil and paper. Or buy loose truffles on the go (I often ask for them simply on a serviette of just looking for a quick snack or taster). And unless you are absolutely dying for one, maybe leave those wrapped restaurant sweets behind. #reducewaste #reduceplastic #refuseplastic #saveouroceans
🧜🏻‍♀️”Those who live by the sea can hardly form a single thought of which the sea would not be part.”🐚 . HERMANN BROCH, foreword, The Spell . 🐬Truth AF!!! The ocean never disappoints. Have a great day friends!
If you are trying to reduce your plastic this year then these starter kits are a perfect first step. OSKeco was set up by a 10 year old boy after he heard about the disastrous effects of plastic in the ocean. He wanted to make it easy for people to buy alternatives to single use plastic at reasonable prices. Let us know if you want to hear more about the journey that brought this project to life. #oskeco #madewithlove 💕

This is one of numerous chimpanzees in Kibale national park, Uganda, who have lost legs, arms, toes and fingers through human use of wire snares. Did you know that 15-25% of chimpanzees in Uganda are disabled because of conflict with humans? Wire snares or "landmines of the forest" have resulted in chimpanzees losing lives and limbs. As chimpanzees rely on climbing and traveling long distances to find food, injuries can severely impact their survival. The snares can also impact on forest ecology. For example, if vital seed disperser populations (such as chimpanzees) fall - this could change the structure and species richness of the forest. The Kibale Snare Removal Program is a conservation initiative run by the Kibale Chimpanzee Project and funded by several Jane Goodall Institute branches. Rangers find and remove hundreds of snares per year and identify areas where hunting and other illegal activities occur within the national parks. In order to combat snaring in the long-term, the organization also believes education and reaching out to the community is just as important as disarming these "landmines". We agree and think as much as we can involve local areas, the more we can create protectors and ambassadors for local species whether plant or animal :) Photo: Andrew Graham-Brown
