Giraffe can eat as much as 29Kg of acacia leaves and twigs daily. . . . **** The acacia tree has developed several clever defence mechanisms to prevent giraffe from munching on these trees one of which is thorns. As I have experienced first hand after painfully stepping on a fair few, the acacia does not mess about when it comes to thorns. You can see these ‘devil thorns’ behind the giraffe in this picture, some can get as long as 8-10cm, and are as sharp as a knife. Not something I would like to munch on! . . . *** However, the clever giraffe have developed a counter to this, by way of their incredible tongues. The giraffe’s tongue is about 45cm in length and very flexible. This allows the animal to successfully negotiate the bigger thorns and pull the leaves from the branch. But the acacia trees have a plan B. . . . *** Plan B is the release of tannins. Tannins can be useful by humans in many processes but they’re no good to giraffes! Besides tasting awful, tannins inhibit digestion. . . . *** What’s even more amazing is that acacia trees within 50 yards react to the release of the tannin by their neighbour and jump on the bandwagon by emitting their own. This simultaneous tannin release by all nearby acacias prevents the hungry giraffe, who must now travel upwind to trees that have not yet ‘caught wind’ of his uncontrollable appetite. . . . *** Nature never ceases to amaze me . . . #giraffe#animal#nature#wild#wildlife#reticulated#samburu#africa#kenya#thorns#photooftheday#photography#africageophoto#wildlifephotography#travel#explore#adventure#learn#amazingnature#facts#acacia#tannin#photooftheday#picoftheday#beautiful#homeschool#teacher#science#conservation#environment
Here at Unison, we strongly value community and charity, both near and abroad. This morning we received this message from our contact in Kenya; it illustrates that even giving a little can go a very long way: “Hi Kerrie and Ryan. You must have read in The news about the terrible draught in many parts of Kenya. 13 counties in the northern Kenya have no water as as well as food. Our government is feeding many people in those areas including Samburu. The main river is completely dry. Our ladies are quite fortunate they have water just outside their houses.” . . . #unisonconstruction#unisonconstructionmanagement#charity#samburu#kenya#waterislife#waterisahumanright#gobekind#givingback#constructioncompany @thekindnessguy
In 2016, my husband and I visited Kenya and it’s rural villages; we saw a broken water faucet, fixed it, filled the village tank and continue to do so.... Today we received this message from our contact in 🇰🇪 Kenya-it’s always affirming and encouraging to know that giving a little can go a very long way ❤️💦 ————————————— “Hi Kerrie and Ryan. Żegnam się już z @desertroselodge 👍😢💪 To było kilka fantastycznych dni spędzonych z dala od internetów i zasięgów sieci telefonicznych💪 Za to mogłem się w pełni poświęcić obserwowaniu, odczuwaniu i fotografowaniu📷📸📷 Będzie mi brakowało wschodów i zachodów słońca, tutejszej gościnności i pozytywnej energii tego miejsca... Wyjeżdżam z wielką nadzieją, że jeszcze tu wrócę💪❤️😀
Samburu warriors dance by the glow of a fire. The light too scarce to shoot the features of the warriors or to capture the vivid colours is their dress, so I chose to contrast the orange glow of the fire with the royal blue of the sky and create an altogether more graphic image of their silhouettes.

A section of leaders from Samburu County have said that the area is severely affected by drought ravaging the northern part of the country. Led by Samburu Women Representative Maison Leshoomo, the leaders pointed out Samburu East, Samburu North and parts of Samburu Central as the worst hit. Speaking in Maralal town, Leshoomo called on the national government to map out Samburu as an area in dire need and urgently provide relief food to the affected residents. “Women, children and the elderly are the most affected since they are unable to migrate in search for food and pasture,” said. She also noted that some people in the county are living with hunger-related diseases such as malnutrition adding that some have died of the same. On his part, Ndoto Ward MCA Rais Letura lamented how the national government reports left out Samburu County as one of the counties affected by starvation. Letura accused the government for ignoring their county and yet it shares the same rain patterns with surrounding counties such as Baringo and Turkana. “The government is leaving Samburu County and only focusing on the counties the that surrounding such as Baringo, Turkana, Isiolo and Marsabit and yet we share the same lifestyle climatic conditions and weather patterns,” lamented Letura. Letura noted that most herders in Samburu and parts of Marsabit have migrated to Nyiro ward in Samburu North leading to tension between the various communities in search of water and pasture. #samburu#starvation#kenya#drought#hunger
