I’m closer to 30 than to 20, but I did devour this book and acknowledge that if I were not a white woman with my own privileges it would be harder to stomach, much like episodes of Girls. Conversations with Friends is a breezier read with some raw nuanced emotional quality that was hard to not identify with (the good parts, but especially the bad). #bookstagram #whatimreading #sallyrooney
Mmhh. A difficult one to review as it looks like general reviews are absolutely stellar. So let’s start from the “YAY”: Rooney has a very distinctive voice and she manages to keep a fast pace although nothing much really happens. The two main characters feel very real and the general feel of discomfort they live with is perfectly represented and described. Now, the “NAY”: I really enjoyed the first half of the book but then it seemed somehow to repeat itself. Connor and Marianne are the only two characters that really feel 3 dimensional. Everybody else feels like a fading reflection if a real person. Marianne family, that impacts so much in her being so “different”, lacks of any definition and purpose. Same for the occasional boyfriend/girlfriend etc. Overall it is an interesting book and I really don’t mind the detached voice of the storyteller however there is something completely missing for me that makes it somehow “incomplete”. #sallyrooney #normalpeople #bookstagram #instabook #shelfie #ireland #leggeresempreecomunque

Another one on the list of books that just HAVE to be read in one sitting 😊 ..I was naive to expect a fairytale ending, but god the book was so engrossing and also so “current” and relevant. I’m really looking forward to reading her other novel! #sallyrooney #normalpeople

“All these years they’ve been like two little plants sharing the same plot of soil, growing around one another, contorting to make room, taking certain unlikely positions...They’ve done a lot of good for each other. Really, she thinks, really. People can really change one another.” (p.265-266). There were many beautifully written moments like this, but at times Normal People was rather an exhausting and frustrating read. It spanned four years of its protagonists, Marianne and Connell, struggling to determine their relationship with one another, cascading their way through perplexing miscommunications, complicated sexual desires, and the challenges of different socio-economic backgrounds. Despite this, fundamentally the story’s exploration of loneliness, abuse, suicide, and depression were what made is so relevant to the everyday struggles of real life instead of just portraying a naively glamourised version of a youthful love story. While most of the supporting characters in the novel didn’t evolve into anything beyond one-dimensional, I did particularly appreciate the perceptively kind, wise and selfless characterisation of Connell’s mum, Lorraine. #sallyrooney #normalpeople #goodreads

5/5 ★ I absolutely loved this debut book by Sally Rooney. Frances is a 21 year old, aspiring writer who finds herself getting closer to married actor, Nick. Through secrets, lies, beautiful houses, holidays, parties and raucous dinners, Frances starts falling in love with Nick. She is forced to face her own vulnerabilities for the first time. #bookcommunity #bookphotography #reading #book #reads #sallyrooney #conversationswithfriends #bookish #books #reader #bookworm #bookstagram #bookshelf #bookclub #junereads #bookgram #sallyrooneynormalpeople
So yesterday @theliteraryaddict tagged me to do a post for the #bookstagrammermademedoit . Since I started following and posting in the bookstagram community almost a year ago I have seen so many great book recommendations from so many different people. . I read “Pet Sematary” for the first time because of @jobis89 even though it’s been on my shelf for years. I’ve been so happy to find so many Stephen King fans on bookstagram to share the love with. . I bought “Daisy Jones and The Six” and “Normal People” even though they aren’t the types of books I normally go for because I saw reviews from @ab_reads and @theliteraryaddict amongst many others. . I’ve enjoyed taking part in readalongs, most recently the “Mystic River” readalong hosted by the awesome @8luebird and @ilovethispod . There are a million good things about bookstagram but the best bit by far is the encouragement to buy books when I’m not supposed to and the expansion of my library with a whole load of books I may never have read otherwise. . I don’t know who has done this and who hasn’t so if you’ve not done it and you want to consider yourself tagged! . #bookstagram #bookworm #bookgeek #bibliophile #booklover #books📚 #booklife #readingislife #booklove #booksofinstagram #lovebooks #lovereading #bookaholic #booknerd #readingaddict #reading #readingtime #bookwormery #stephenking #sallyrooney #taylorjenkinsreid #dennislehane

"Say you want me to stay and i will" - Connell. Finished it in one day. Hayss loved it. 😍😭❤💔 sally rooney srsly love your books. #sallyrooney #normalpeople
I started reading Sally Rooney’s Conversations With Friends with scepticism as it has had such a big hype around it. It didn’t take much reading when I already noticed I was intrigued and couldn’t stop reading, as it totally sucked me in. I guess it was refreshing to read about adult conversations as counterbalance to the conversations that I have with my kids daily 🙈. . There are 4 main characters in the book. University students Frances and Bobby and a slightly older married couple Nick and Melissa. They start hanging around together and different kind of relationships are formed. The narrator of the story is Frances, so the main focus is on her life and who she is. Even though I didn’t fully identify with any of the characters, I grew fond of all of them. They are far from perfect, but they are interesting with their flaws. . To me, Frances was the most interesting character. She reacts to everything ironically and wants to give other people an impression that she is tough, a little indifferent and cold emotionally. She sure lacks some emotional intelligence but actually she is vulnerable and has her insecurities. . The language is quite simple and straight-forward with no poetic expressions and the storyline is also a little cliched (young girl starting a relationship with an older married man), but they are not the main focus of the book. The main focus is the characters and the witty and smart conversations they have with each other. In my opinion, this book also depicts infatuation, attraction (also sexual) and a love triangle skillfully and I wanted to cheer for the fact that Rooney included endometriosis in her book, as it should become better-known for its commonness among women. Overall entertaining and immersive debut novel and I had to reserve Rooney’s newest book Normal People from the library right after finishing this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. #bookishsummersundays19 Sunshine or summer rain #readtheatlas Ireland
I’m back to spending my lunch breaks reading like I did in middle school, and let me tell you it is just as exciting • Currently Reading NORMAL PEOPLE by Sally Rooney 📚🖤
Stopped by my local library today and picked some holds! I haven’t been in the reading mood this week, well correction, I HAVE ☝🏾BUT, I just haven’t read something that captured my interest. • • These two seem relatively short, so I hope they get me back on track! Are you participating in your local library’s summer reading challenge? I signed up today and was able to log two from this week that would count! Something about a challenge that makes me want to read more!! • • What are you reading this week? Any recommendations? Stop by and say hello! “Her gaze unsettles him like it used to, like looking into a mirror, seeing something that has no secrets from you.” I loved Rooney’s prose in this novel for her capacity to identify and observe seemingly banal details from day-to-day life and make them painfully interesting. In amongst pages where snow is compared to a ‘ceaseless repetition of the same infinitesimally small mistake’ (erm, WOW), I can see how this book has aroused so much excitement amongst critics, hailing it as a millennial authorial masterpiece. Following a will-they-won’t-they scenario between unlikely soulmates Marianne and Connell, we watch as the fates of school friends from opposite ends of the social spectrum relentlessly dance around each other throughout university and into adulthood. Whilst the pair have undeniable sexual chemistry, their respective social situations and personal issues seem to hold them back from fully, romantically investing in one and other (at least, in the conventional sense). It’s a brutally honest tale, acknowledging that human relationships don’t fit into the convenient romantic boxes that we are conditioned to want them to. I think Rooney explores realistic territory that the novel’s contemporaries are all too often afraid to explore; in Rooney’s world, people are multidimensional and complicated, and that’s a beautiful thing to witness. Whilst I loved the novel for its fearless portrayal of human relationships (whether that be with family, friends or in sexual terms), I do have to acquiesce that it could be tedious at times. But then, I suppose normal people can be pretty boring, can’t they? 4.5/5🌟 #sallyrooney #normalpeople #normalpeoplesallyrooney #bookstagrammer #bookster #bookreview #bookish #booklover #elbookreviews2019 #bookstagram #bookstagramuk #bookstagrammer

Definitely hopping on the hype train for Normal People by Sally Rooney! As someone who took a lot of Irish literature classes in college, I was immediately inundated by ideas for essays, most prevalently the exploration of masculine aggression and feminine submission in modern Irish literature compared to 19th century Irish lit, as both are full of those concepts but they’re represented really differently. Honestly, I’m still working everything out! ✨ I also loved reading about Trinity College Dublin and felt like Rooney perfectly captured the social and intellectual intricacies of the environment (and I was only there for six months), especially when she discussed classes and the literature readings (swipe for the best line in the whole book on page 71). ✨ I’ve read some reviews that talked about how Marianne and Connell (another essay topic: Is he named after the Irish hero, Daniel O’Connell and if so, why?) are horrible people. I didn’t find them to be horrible people necessarily but just people who had/have horrible experiences and struggle to cope with them — I saw them as scarily real characters. I could see remnants of my friends and myself in certain personality traits of these characters and that’s quite frightening considering that this book isn’t the happiest. ✨ On that note, I was hoping for a very solid, upbeat ending that gave me some closure but (spoiler alert!) it didn’t happen and while it was in keeping with the overall tone of the book, I still wanted something more regulated for Marianne and Connell. ✨ Definitely pick up a copy of this one — it’s not necessarily happy but it’s so beautiful written and engaging!! Swipe to see some pictures of Trinity College and Dublin, because I’ll take any opportunity to reminisce.
Hiver meg omsider på bølgen. Lovende start på Rooney, bra badebombe.🍑 (Eller: Er dette et bokbad?) #sallyrooney

I read "Normal People" and because it was so good and I have no self control I read "Conversations With Friends" right afterward and now the plots are mixed up in my head. I know I am late to this party but Sally Rooney is so so good! Both books feature Trinity College students and their relationships to one another, to class identity, to mental and physical health, and to ~capitalism~. °°°° °°°° These books are very attuned to the experiences of (white, college-educated) millennials since Sally Rooney herself is only 28. °°°° °°°° It's hard to explain exactly their appeal since the topics in the book are very commonplace. I just found that the characters were often thinking or saying what's on my mind, but, um, in a way that's much more articulate than I could. Sally Rooney was an extremely successful college debater before she turned to writing, something you can see in the quick back-and-forth conversations that guide the books. (The screenshots are from "Conversations With Friends")
Nothing better than a great book by the ocean on a hot summer day ☀️ I read “Normal People” by Sally Rooney in less than 3 days. I just could not put the book down - it left me heartbroken and hopeful. Her prose was magic, the story crept under my skin, and I was left with nothing but the motivation to one day tell a story as great and real and raw as the one I had just read. #so with this, I kickoff my book blog and I hope you join me for the ride 📚 ❤️ #booklover #bookblog #books #booksofintagram #normalpeople #sallyrooney #bookstagram

Just finished my 31st book of this year. So here’s my review of Sally Rooney’s Conversations with Friends. I found this book very difficult to put down and read it over the weekend. Each of the four main characters were flawed in their own way but not in an unpleasant way. I felt they each had a history which had made them become who they were. The story ran at an easy quick pace and I found it very readable. Contemporary women writers you should read! ✍️ • Here’s a list of female writers I absolutely love and recommend! These are all fiction books; a non-fiction list is coming up soon! All of these literary works can be found in English! Some of these women are alive, some live through their work now. All of them helped shape my world. 💭 Other female writers I love couldn’t be featured in this list (look at the size of this pile already😅) but I think this is a start if you’re looking to explore literature written by women! • Anaïs Nin (1903-1977) Han Khang (1970-) Eve Babitz (1943-) Chris Kraus (1955-) Elif Batuman (1977-) Ayobami Adebayo (1988-) Ali Smith (1962-) Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986) Chiamanda Ngozi Adichie (1977-) Anna Burns (1962-) Ottessa Moshfegh (1981-) Sheila Heti (1976-) Sally Rooney (1991-) Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) Zadie Smith (1975-) Meg Wolitzer (1959-) • Any writer from this list you love? Bedankt Sally, je inspireert me. #sallyrooney #normalpeople #boeken #schrijven #copywriting #beterschrijven #writing #taal #lezen #schrijfsel #schrijf #languageskills #writingskills #freelance #contentcreator #copywriting #copywriter #storytelling #storyteller #zzp #ondernemen

🌿I finished Normal People by Sally Rooney quite a while ago, but I’ve needed a bit of time to process it. • • • • Though the characters were often frustrating and irritating, I felt ALL of the emotions for them. This book did take me a while to get through simply because it became rather heavy and depressing towards the end. When I say I loved this book, I swear I mean it. I just felt as if this book had no real storyline and was slightly all over the place. Overall, very well written; however, I would have liked some more structure within the plot. • • • • This was one of the two books I received from Book of the Month! Have you tried BOTM? If so, did you like it? • • • • #books #normalpeople #sallyrooney #bookworm #bookstagram #bookshelf #shelfie #bookreview #bibliophilie #booksofintagram #bookofthemonth
What did you read this weekend? 📸: @sarasolamae
WOWWOWWOW ! . . . i devoured this absolutely beautiful book in 2 days. i laughed and i cried and i fell completely in love with both Connell and Marianne, despite, and in some ways because of, all their faults and shortcomings. . . . it was pure, honest, and heartbreaking. it was beautifully written. it was a 10/10. it was an “i wana shout from the rooftops how good it was” kind of book. do yourself a favor and read this book now and ugly cry just like i did. . . . #book #bookclub #normalpeople #sallyrooney #sallyrooneywriter #hogarth #penguinrandomhouse
We leave for vacation tonight! Spending the week with my (future) in-laws in South Carolina where I hope to get hours and hours of beach reading done 🏖 🌊 📖 I may be overestimating with the stack I’m packing but too many books is certainly better than too little! I’m about 30% into Educated and then can’t wait to start Recursion. I loved Dark Matter and Ive only seen great things so far about his next one! See any here you loved? . . . . . . . . . . #bookstack #bookhaul #newbooks #currentreads #bookpost #bookpics #bookstagram #whatimreading #vacationreads #beachreads #spiveys📚club #goodreads #bookofthemonth #arc #advancedreaderscopy #normalpeople #sallyrooney #ifthen #recursion #blakecrouch #thelasttimeisawyou #livconstantine #educated #tarawestover #hownottodiealone #memoir #bookish #booklover #bookobssessed #summerreading
I finished Normal People today and am exploding with thoughts 🤯 Can’t wait to chat with you all about it at our next discussion 📚🍷
Such fresh writing. Sally Rooney is so talented. I really liked her first novel, and this one will leave a lasting impression. Believe the hype. #sallyrooney #normalpeople #books #reading #whatimreading #summerreading #instabooks
Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney (2017) Initial thoughts: 1. I only read this because a friend I respect v. much told me she was sure I would like it. It’s a hard sell, because it’s just about some friends talking, and a young Irish girl falling in love with a married man. What’s so special about that? Yet I read it quite literally in a day, rudely ignoring my husband to find out what would happen next. 2. “Is it about a girl who wears sunglasses and a girl who doesn’t?” asked my exasperated husband. Kind of, to be honest. The protagonist, Frances, is so veiled and oblique that it’s a miracle when she manages to communicate any of her emotions. I really love reading about stoic characters discovering how to be vulnerable— it’s an arc that always interests me. 3. I was living in Dublin for a time right when Sally Rooney would have been studying there, so I also enjoyed it for nostalgic/familiarity reasons Furthermore: I really, thoroughly enjoyed Conversations with Friends. I think this is maybe how the Man Booker Prize men have felt all these years when they read books about regretful college professors sleeping with their nubile young students? It was so exactly aimed at me. Pretentious university students discussing the evils of capitalism, feeling confused by female friendships, falling in painful, inappropriate love. Negative reviews call it a book about unlikable people doing unlikable things. I guess I am unlikable in the same way as Frances in her friends, because it all felt very vivid and real to me! This is a gorgeous, literary book for people who like reading about complex friendships, complicated love, and brittle people discovering their points of vulnerability.
