THE CASE FOR LSU: . . LSU is an interesting team but one thing you can’t deny is their talent and depth. Starting at point guard, the tigers are led by Tremont Waters. Waters has been their best player this year and leader. Waters is a point guard who will always make the right play for the team and give them a bucket when it’s needed. Starting at shooting guard is Skylar Mays. Mays, just like waters always makes the right play for the team and has come up with many big shots this year. He’s an elite shooter on the wing and can make things happen in the paint. At power forward the tigers have a future NBA star in Naz Reid. Reid is a 6’10 forward who can score big points in the paint and stretch the floor with his three point shooting. He’s also somebody you can give the ball to at the free throw line and let him make something happen, whether that’s getting basket or finding an open man. At center the tigers have 7 footer Kavell Bigby-Williams, an elite rebounder and someone you can lob it up too. Freshman Javonte Smart comes off the bench, but he plays a lot more than the starter, Marlon Taylor. Smart is a guard that can score at will. When smart gets hot he is impossible to stop and he will lead the Tigers for the whole game. After that Darius Days and Emmitt Williams come off the bench and give valuable minutes and are really the key to this big lengthy offense. LSU is one of the best offenses in the country, having many weapons that can score and give them baskets when needed. Let’s also not forget they have an extra motivation to play for Wayde Sims, a teammate who was killed earlier this year. I would definitely not be surprised is LSU beat Michigan State and went on a run to the National Championship.
Last season, the Utah Jazz were one of the most exciting teams in the NBA thanks to Rookie of the Year candidate Donovan Mitchell and defensive stalwart Rudy Gobert. This season, the team will once again find itself in the playoffs, but one has to wonder if the current roster has already hit its ceiling. Could it be that the team's fast tracked success in the wake of Gordon Hayward's departure is actually harmful in the long term? We here at 3cosportsnba decided to analyze the situation. _ The Jazz have two very good building blocks in Mitchell and Gobert. However, aside from those two players the team does not have many players with "star" potential. As we see from today's league, it is impossible to win a championship without at least 2 offensive superstars on the roster. While Gobert is very, very good as a two way player, he is not an elite offensive player. The team may have honestly been better off tanking last season instead of making a playoff run, as they could have landed a player with more upside than Grayson Allen to pair with Gobert and Mitchell. While I know that no player would ever willfully tank, the team's best interest might have been to do so. _ As the team is currently structured, the playing style is reminiscent of the post-KD/pre-PG era of the Oklahoma City Thunder, with Mitchell operating as the (less prolific) Russell Westbrook and Gobert serving as the (better defensive version of) Steven Adams. That brand of basketball is unsustainable against teams as deep as Golden State and Denver, leaving the Jazz in a purgatory state. As fun as they are now, they may very well be stuck as a lower tier fringe playoff team for the foreseeable future (think Joe Johnson era Hawks). _ What do you guys think? THE CASE FOR VIRGINIA TECH . . Virginia Tech has become one of my favorite teams. Coming into the tournament they were one of the two most underrated teams in the country. Virginia Tech for most of the year was led by senior point guard, Justin Robinson. However Robinson went down with a foot injury. Robinson has however returned to the team for the tourney, although he isn’t 100% he is still a big value to the Hokies. The Hokies have two elite shooters on the wing in Ty Outlaw and Ahmed Hill. They are both so dangerous when the attention is of the defense is shed on Robinson, Walker or Blackshear. Nickeil Alexander-Walker is the Hokies best player. Walker can get to the rim, shoot the 3 and has a dangerous mid range pull up. He is the key to this offense when he gets down hill and looks for a basket or a kick out. In the paint is center, Kerry Blackshear jr. Kerry feeds off the glass and will occasionally shoot a midrange jump shot. The Hokies are an elite defensive team and an underrated offensive team. I would not be surprised if they were to upset Duke and go on to the national championship.
