I don’t know if any research has been done on it but I definitely find that my patients all go through very similar stages to the five stages of grief when their injured: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression (I think calling it low mood in this case is more appropriate) and Acceptance.⠀ .⠀ This grief can sometimes be so overwhelming for my patients that it stops them from doing the things that they need to do to help their injury recover. So it’s really important to find coping mechanisms, otherwise you can actually hinder your recovery.⠀ .⠀ My advice for the denial stage: Don’t hang around in the denial stage for too long. Be honest with yourself and if your injury's not showing signs of improving, get the right advice as quickly as possible. This will speed up your recovery process.⠀ .⠀ Anger stage: Instead of just being angry, think about what you can learn from this to take with you and avoid injury in the future.⠀ .⠀ Bargaining stage: Relative rest is the ultimate positive “bargaining” tool as it allows you to be active while your injury recovers. Relative rest means that you only cut out or reduce the activities that really affect your injury. Often I can get my patients to rest their injury by just adjusting their training for a while, like limiting the distance or changing the terrain they run on or the speed they run at.⠀ .⠀ Low mood stage: Seek advice early on so that you know what the normal recovery rate for your injury is and what to expect. Keep a diary and celebrate every small step forward. Your body will heal – you just need to give it the chance to do so.⠀ .⠀ 🌟Need more help with your injury? Haha, couldn't help but take this photo yesterday. I was out doing site visits and meet my sister for lunch and I just love the difference in us. . We both work in an office job, I see the public more than my sister and am always "the face" of the government yet I never wear a suit and am always wearing full on colour with petticoats 😂😂😂😂😂. . THROWING BACK TO MY FIRST MARATHON - even though you wouldn't think it now but back in 2011 I was busy running, even though I would say I am terribly built for long distance running and I actually sucked at it. I did it to stay fit at the time but my core reason was to toughen up mentally. I started just walking on the treadmill which made me impatient and I kept dreaming about doing something bigger and harder - so I rolled with the challenge and started doing 5km runs, 10km runs, half marathons and eventually a marathon. I wasnt the fastest, most diligent runner and had no idea about pacing myself. Often I went out way to fast and in this race in particular I vommitted 3 times! But, I finished every single one of them and learnt from each race. . But, I cannot even begin to tell you how rewarding the whole experience of this part of my life was, I learnt to overcome a deeper pain that really tests physical and mental strength only at a certain demanding threshold. . Comfort and complacency doesnt move you forward, but challenge, fear and getting outside of your comfort zone can! If you think you can't, you can't, if you think you can, go for gold, what have you got to loose!? . I hope this helped kick someones butt tonight to get cracking on living your best life! And never ever worry about doing something you might suck at because you might learn some of the best lessons in life 🏆☝️💪
