Happy Moon Day Everyone! 🌝To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing we went to @barnesandnoble to let baby pick out his celebratory moon book. We read it as a bedtime story tonight accompanied by some twinkly lights and his moon nightlight that we both adore. This book by @susannaleonardhill and illustrated by @elisapaganelli_illustration is precious and I’m so happy to add it to our collection. It also has a QR code in the beginning and end. One allows you to hear the countdown to lift off and one @neilarmstrongofficial first words on the moon. Such a cool feature! I loved sharing my love of space with my son today. ☺️ What did y’all do to celebrate this anniversary?
Are you old enough to remember the summer of 69 (cue the @bryanadams song!)? I hate to date myself but many of us were at their family’s summer cottage, including as it turns out a young @colchrishadfield (yes, the Canadian astronaut). We were all very excited to see man land on the moon on tv. But believe it or not, not everyone had electricity at their cottage. So on July 20th, if there was a cottage with electricity and a tv, you can bet all the neighbours were there. Chris wrote the most wonderful book about this spectacular event. Turns out he was scared of the dark but that incredible night changed his life and gave him a dream that he was amazingly able to achieve. The Darkest Dark is now in paperback (published by @tundrabooks) and was illustrated by @ericfanillustration and @terryfanillustration. If you follow me you know I’m a huge fan of the Fan Brothers 😂! Their phenomenal work continues to amaze me. We featured The Darkest Dark in our November Picture Book box. 🐈❤️🌔📚
I’m going to be honest. Getting my kids to do Arabic games and puzzles is not as easy as it is to get them to do other activities. It’s not the language they are most comfortable in, but I insist we do it and I insist we use the best resources I can get my hands on. . . It took a few tries to get the first one right, but after that, my 7-year-old got into this and wanted to see how many sentences he could put together by himself. Was I sitting next to him rewarding him with M&Ms after each successful attempt? You bet I was! . . What bribes/incentives do you use to get your kids to do homework or anything other than screen time? 🤣
#childrenbookrecommendation . Gorilla by Anthony Browne . We’ve had this book for over 2 years now and both my daughter and I love the story and absolutely adore the illustrations . This emotive and endearing book tells a story of a little girl Hannah who wants nothing more but to spend time with her very busy father. Left to her own devices she spends her days reading about gorillas, watching gorilla shows, drawing gorillas. But she has never seen a real gorilla. She asks for a gorilla for her birthday from her dad . On the eve of her birthday she is tingling with excitement to receive her present. But she is disappointed as her dad gets her a small gorilla and in utter frustration and dismay she throws the gorilla toy. However, in the middle of the night she is woken up a big real gorilla at the foot of her bed. The gorilla takes her to a birthday adventure which includes going to a zoo which Hannah enjoys . And the next day her father wishes her happy birthday and offer to take her to the zoo . Although a little sad in the beginning, the story is refreshingly honest and deeply gratifying. Exploring feelings such as loneliness, anxiety, excitement and contentment with simple effective text and beautifully persuasive illustrations. The language in the text is not too complex and is complimented with illustrations making it suitable for both reading and listening for children . Appropriate age group: 4 years and above . Ohh and a gorilla taking a little girl for an adventure makes my little girl pick up this book again and again .
Ayaan’s favourite activity is reading books. He loves to be surrounded by books and is his treasured pastime. The vibrant colours, pictures attract him and he is the happiest when he’s around them. . One of the things I’m grateful for is that my son shares his love for reading like I do. Reading is a habit I have created since the very beginning. From the time he was a month old I introduced him to Flash cards which come in black and white that stimulates visual learning. As he grew older I introduced picture books like fruits, vegetables, vehicles etc. . Since he turned a year old I started reading to him stories. Buy books for your child which is of interest to them. Ayaan loves vehicles and animals so I try and buy books for him which talks about different vehicles or animal stories. Buy books with lots of pictures and bright colours, it will keep them engaged longer. One of the first words he said was ‘Pooh’ as I was reading to him stories of Winnie the Pooh’. . I can easily take him out for dinner with me now as I only and only carry books. It keeps him occupied, eats his food and let’s us eat too, peacefully. . Can the love of reading be inculcated? How late is too late to start reading? The passion for reading can begin at any stage in your life.
