I was chatting to somebody with anxiety today about the hardest part of getting into exercise when struggling with your mental health. Jen said her fear started way before even choosing a PT or stepping into a gym for the first time. The fear was in getting up that week knowing she'd have to face something unknown, in putting on her gym kit and walking out the front door, in being judged by people she'd never met. She knew her body was much stronger than her mind and wished there were more PT's out there with a focus on mental health who could help her restore that balance. . . I chose to become a Personal Trainer to make exercise more accessible for people like Jen; helping people with a range of complex needs to rebuild confidence, routine, togetherness. Building physical strength is great. Set no.2 of 4 x 8 with 150kg ✴ Form is more important than  Weight ✴ Treat the light weights like they're heavy, and the heavy weights become light. ⭕This means whether you are lifting 20% or 100% of your max, your form should look the same. ⭕Mastery of a certain weight is important before moving onto a heavier one, otherwise you just compound bad form with heavy weight = increased chance of injury ⭕Learn the difference between a hip hinge and a squat. Squatting the deadlift and deadlifting the squat is not the way forward my dudes. ⭕Have someone film your technique or do what I do and just stick your phone down and do it yourself, you'll never know what your form is like unless you see it for yourself. Thursday done!  Phew that's better!  Sometimes life throws a spanner in the works...Tuesday night the boy kept me awake for way too long so yesterday aside from work and dog walk I had no energy!  Thankfully back on it today with a chilly start, I think I'll be warm outside again in April!  After great sessions with clients today, lots of resistance band action this week, it was nice to hit the gym and get a good cross-trainer workout in and then a luscious arm, shoulder and back workout with lat pulldown and cable station. But have no fear, there is nothing actually stiffening or becoming stuck in your spine or joints!  This is your brain’s way of trying to protect you from reinjury or to avoid a sensation that is perceived as unpleasant. So stop thinking you need to have your back cracked or put back in place! In fact, there are studies showing the same reduction in stiffness between groups who received hands-on treatment only versus exercises only. I’m talking about our friends who are brilliant, opportunistic, impulsive, and unable to independently identify danger. My experiences have made me more aware of my environment and things I can do to keep everyone safe. So here are my best tips you should consider, if you believe you may find yourself with a friend who needs help staying safe. . . ☝🏾Plan your session ahead of time. Have all necessary materials out. Have all stimulatory or distracting materials hidden. Your backup plan needs a backup plan. ☝🏾Know your route from initial encounter to therapy area. Are there exterior doors? Places of danger? A year of reverse dieting done! I’ve added 1200cal a day to my diet, 80% from carbs. My weights been maintaining the last couple of months as I’ve slowly made the last few increases. January we drop weight. 2018 has paid off just focusing on building my metabolism up, creating shape and being able to get away with eating so much food I’ve never in my life been able to do. Pull-up and Chin-up variations 👱🏼‍♀️ One of the exercises I use with clients at the start of training is a supine position pull up/row to get the feel of pulling bodyweight from a stationary position. Next, we work on other modifications to achieve a chin-up/pull-up.  1. Isometric chin-up - holding top position of a chin up under tension.  2. Suspended pull-ups - using rings or barbell sitting directly under, pulling body upwards. 3. Eccentric chin-ups - Jump and pause at the top lowering slowly for a 5-10 second period. 4. Band assisted pull ups/chin ups - altering band strength and rep ranges.  Both pull-ups and chin-ups are among the best exercises for back and overall upper body conditioning. However, they target the muscles a bit differently. Both exercises will work the latissimus dorsi and biceps, but standard chin-ups—with an underhand grip—place more emphasis on the biceps.  Completing this exercise 3 times per week will help with results 💪🏼 #beyourbest

Here are a few exercises I like to include in client programs and here’s why 👱🏼‍♀️💬 Loaded carries build the strength of multiple parts of your body. Carries strengthen your core, develop your hip stability, and create a yoked upper back. They're also incredible for building your grip strength, an often overlooked capacity that aids your ability to perform all kinds of strength movements.  Pallof press It Works the Core of Your Core. The beauty of the Pallof press is that it challenges and strengthens the stabilization action of your abs. That's because when you do this exercise, it forces your core to resist the rotation or compression of your spine, which forces your entire core to engage.  The kettlebell overhead carry is a great movement to increase overhead stability and strength on a single-sided basis. Kettlebells are a great variation because they force a lifter to keep the wrist stable (not extended) and in turn allow for a more ideal vertical alignment of the scapulae, shoulder joint, elbows, and wrist.  #beyourbest #bensonfitness
