The combine prep process is truly one of my favorite preps in all athletics. It is truly position and athlete specific. There is NO set program you can follow. Having a great feel for the athlete is 🔑 . Unlike most strength coaches I FIRMLY believe is ok to change on the fly. It means you are in tune with the athlete or group and realize the timing of what you have planned isn’t appropriate. Let’s face it these NFL guys have 1 day and 1 shot to put down great times and numbers. Looking forward to the next 9 weeks to see how it shakes out! . The Pro-Agility Shuttle is a key test used by coaches and scouts to evaluate football players at the NFL Combine, college pro days, and other football combines across the country. It is a great way to assess a player's quickness and ability to change directions, which are fundamental skills for success on the gridiron! . . This is just one of the test we use at the gym to measure if our program is working and improving an athlete’s agility. . . ♦️Pro Agility Shuttle To set up for the Pro Agility Shuttle, position three cones in a straight line five yards apart. Start at the center cone in a three-point stance, straddling the start/finish line. Timing starts on your first movement. Sprint five yards to the right...turn and touch the line with your right hand at the cone. Sprint 10 yards to the far cone...turn and touch line with your left hand at the cone. Sprint five yards THROUGH the finish line. This can also be performed starting to the left. . . ♦️Keys to the Pro-Agility Shuttle 1. The hand on the start/finish line determines the direction. If you have your left hand down, you must start to the left. 2. You must touch each line with the proper hand. The right line must be touched with your right hand, and the left line must be touched with your left hand. This ensures that you are pivoting off both legs during the drill. When you do it properly, you never turn your back to the coach. . . ♦️Tips to a Better Pro-Agility Shuttle 1. Stay low on your start and turns. 2. Plant your foot on the inside of the turn lines to keep your center of gravity and power base inside of your legs. 3. Run through the finish line instead of lunging. 4. The 20 Yard Shuttle is great way to test your quickness, and ultimately, an athlete's ability to accelerate /decelerate and change directions. . It’s a staple of the NFL combine, but quickness is beneficial to most athletes from soccer, to basketball, to field hockey! To execute this test you’ll need 3 things: Access to a football field with visible lines every 5 yards OR a tape measure of at least 10 yards/30 feet. 3 cones or other visible markers A companion to time you with a stop watch or an electronic timing system To start, the athlete must place one marker in the middle line, between 10 yards, and place the others two at the ends. Then the athlete must straddle the middle marker/cone, and on a signal of “go” , sprint either left or right 5 yards to the first lateral cone, touching the cone with one hand, and then immediately changing direction, sprinting 10 yards to the furthest cone. The athlete must then, touch the furthest cone, changing direction again, and then sprinting through the middle cone. The timer stops when the athlete’s chest crosses the middle marker/cone.
