Something different about this Porsche 911, it’s a 1 of 1 prototype hybrid, it uses a Vonnen Performance setup which adds +150hp +150lb-ft to the crankshaft. And the Vonnen “Shadow Drive” system bypasses Porsche’s engine computers, so the car essentially drives the same as it would, but it’s much quicker, and more powerful with instant torque from zero rpm. Using a small 1kWh battery means it gets depleted but also recharges and cools quickly. You control the system via a smartphone app, which lets you shut it off if you want your car back to its “stock” form (+170lbs), or can choose from 3 modes, which you can see in the video. Street mode is for when you want a little extra squirt, feels like you’re driving a bigger engine car, Sport adds a little more, but both of these modes give you about 60-70% of the system’s power. Overboost mode, similar to Tesla’s Ludicrous mode, gives you all the electrons, full blast ahead for a few seconds (it’s *fast*). The biggest number? The price, at $75,000, is hard to justify on a modern Porsche, but definitely makes a more interesting case on air-cooled cars, that might feel sluggish by today’s standards. VSD is available first on the 991 generation (2012-2019), and then 981 Cayman/Boxster, 997 and 996 to follow, and air-cooled cars by the end of the year. If you’ve got the cash, it’d make for quite the conversation starter at the next cars n coffee, and the performance upgrade is significant years before you can get one directly from the factory.
