What does adventure mean to you? The word itself. Does it carry a heavy connotation of long, outdoor excursions, burdened by many natural variables and personal endurance? Nothing wrong with that of course. However not every day can be like that for most of us so I recently decided to spend the day indoors at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I love the outdoors and shooting and selling photography, yet I do make my living by teaching college history. This is a profile of Athena. Athena or Athene, is an ancient Greek goddess associated with wisdom, handicraft, and warfare, who was later syncretized with the Roman goddess Minerva. Athena was regarded as the patron and protectress of various cities across Greece, particularly the city of Athens, from which she most likely received her name. She is usually shown in art wearing a helmet and holding a spear. Her major symbols include owls, olive trees, snakes, and the Gorgoneion. While Ares was the Greek god of warfare, Athena was also a deity connected to the overall strategy of warfare, next to Ares' emphasis on pure martial valor and physical bravery on the battlefield. Make your rainy days interesting. Indoor photography can really make you concentrate on lighting and composition, a good exercise. #keepexploring#history#pittsburgh#museum#indoors#art#fineart#composition#design#lighting#learn#create#pennexplore#pacollective#westernpa#blackandwhite#bnw#artofvisuals#illgrammers#bnwphotography#bnw_captures #mood#moodygrams#bnw_planet #raw_bnw #pennsylvania

To the seniors: One of the best parts of my job is it allows me to meet so many awesome people and learn about their lives and passions. It’s been a real pleasure to work with so many of you across all of my responsibilities here at the university. This class holds a special place in my heart because it’s the first class of students I have seen all the way through their college career. Congratulations on graduating college! The next chapter of your life will be even better. Stay in touch and visit often. Your second home at the University of Pittsburgh will always be here. One last piece of advice, don’t forget to iron or steam your graduation gown, wrinkles don’t look good in pictures. 😉 And as always, Hail to Pitt!
Happy Friday! For Day 4 of #7daysofspecialcollections we've gone back to the days of vaudeville! Harvey Burgess was a local comedic juggler whose performances were well-received. Unfortunately, his career was cut short in 1913 when his eyesight deteriorated, leaving him unable to perform. His collection includes a number of juggling props, but today we thought we'd share a look at his make-up case! The first photo is a look at some of what remains in it, while the second is a look at the lid where Burgess scratched out an inventory of his props. Today we're challenging @unlvspeccoll to share some of their special collections! We're taking the weekend off but our submissions for this @unclibrary challenge will continue on Monday. #vaudeville#juggler#juggling#makeup#stagemakeup#1910s#pittsburgh#pghhistory#pittsburgher#archives#specialcollections#librariesofinstagram#iglibraries

Happy Friday, Friends! I’m the face behind @mcphotopgh. I’ve never done #fridayintroductions so here we go. • ✨I struggle to commit to new shows on Netflix so I rewatch Parks and Rec or The Office every night. ✨I wish I was Storm from X-Men. I’ve dyed my hair before to get the look 😬 ✨In my spare time I’ve been learning to pole dance! It’s not as easy as they make it look 💃🏽 ✨ I’ve got a bad habit of not liking to eat vegetables. I’m working on it! 🥦🥕🥬 ✨ My everyday begins with @maggierogers, “Fallingwater.” In a perfect world, it would include @doyourthingcoffee Jerusalem toast 🤤🍞 • Just a few things about me! Do we have anything in common? I’d love to learn more about you!
