Just a little fun in the city 🏙.
December 11 & 18  Restorative Yoga is a passive, quiet practice in which the body is fully supported by blankets, bolsters, blocks and props. Restorative poses are held for an extended period of time, allowing the body to sink into stillness and relax deeply. In this two hour practice, you’ll get cozy and warm as you settle into Restorative Yoga asanas to ease relax the body, then clear your mind as you are guided into an extended savasana.  Tuesdays December 11 & 18, 6-7:15pm. $20 earlybird per session before 12/1, $25 after. Or $35 for both by 12/1, $45 after

Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better do better. -Maya Angelou . Let’s talk about tree pose and the cue put your foot above or below your knee. This was how I was taught to cue the pose, along with many other teachers I know. I said it this weekend during a class and a workshop. I was wrong and I’m not at all afraid to admit it. . Now that I’m pretty well versed in anatomy I love to periodically re-evaluate cues and how I teach certain poses. Well this one escaped that scrutiny until I read a post by @dr_yogi.gare the other day(check him out if you haven’t already). . He talked about how your body is not any where near as fragile as this cue suggests. I discuss this same thing in my anatomy workshop and when start talking about the knee collapsing in coming into warrior 2 and your knee going past your ankle in a lunge. Your knee is not going to explode! . He also mentioned that any cue that suggest your body is fragile is probably not the best cue which I completely agree with as well. One of my teachers @laurelbeversdorf talks about this idea a lot. We must be careful with our words when teaching someone about movement and their body. We could easily be fear mongering and/or creating a dependence on the teacher, without even realizing it. . Very interesting timing for me as I was having a conversation with a few yogis this Sunday who consider themselves “older”. They were discussing how people their age often seem afraid of physical exercise, while they feel that’s what keeps them feeling young and alive. It turned into a conversation about their age group frequently being sent the message that they are in fact fragile. . The body is resilient. Use proper progressions for exercises, adjust your fitness goals to combat the effects of aging as you grow old and your body will adapt. The human body is an amazing machine. We need to stop treating it like it’s fragile. . . . . . . . . . . #varytheload #movementmedicine
DHYANA — meditation, the 7th limb of Yoga. . I find meditation deeply powerful. Learning to be still and comfortable within your own mind is a beautiful experience. . I never tried formal meditation until my first yoga retreat in January 2016. (Before that, I was obsessed with savasana/corpse pose). I completed a deep meditation lasting about 1.5 hours. It was completely transformative. I went from feeling lonely to knowing I am always loved and supported. It was during that meditation, I tapped into my subconscious and my spirituality. I found the power within and have made positive changes in my life since then. .
