Rolls Royce (2+2a) – Vanilla &Chocolate 🍨🌰🍨 ========================= (1959, Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II ... The short story – extracts: In 1959 Rolls Royce unveiled the (at that time) new Silver Cloud II, a design that would prove to be among the most elegant and sought-after post-war bodies to come out of the Rolls Royce factory. The Silver Cloud II was powered by a brand new, Rolls Royce-developed 6.2 litre all-aluminum V8 that produced 185 hp with the help of twin SU carburetors. This new engine, the replacement for the previous straight-six motor, was so robust that it became the foundation for the Rolls Royce V8 for the next thirty years, appearing under “The Spirit of Ecstasy” until the 1990s (“The Spirit of Ecstasy” is the bonnet ornament on Rolls Royce cars … more about that in a later/coming intro story here on my IG). While the Silver Cloud II's updated body and power plant were enough for most of Britain's elites (Rolls Royce was definitely not a car for the working class people ... it was – and us – a very expensive car), a coachbuilder by the name of H.J. Mulliner offered “something more for those who only desired the best the global car industry had to offer” 🤑. The H.J. Mulliner Drophead Coupe “Adaptation” was named as such because each drophead coupe began its life as a Standard Steel Saloon body that Mulliner then modified extensively by removing the steel top, fitting a pair of larger doors to replace the previous four, and adding modified chrome waistline molding. The result is, practically speaking, a full custom body and it has been noted that the adaptation of the standard Silver Cloud II body was likely just as intensive as had Mulliner created an entirely new Drophead Coupe body for the cars 😅 For me personally, then the Silver Cloud II – as a standard model – would be more than enough though 😉 Disclaimer: I might not personally know neither the owner nor the car, so I can’t guarantee the
