FROM THE TOP DOWN The last week or so has seen great progress on the house. The boring, invisible kind of progress though - no fancy room reveals or dressed interiors! We've been working from the top down, repointing the chimneys, fixing leaks in the roof valleys and parapets, removing the outside water storage (Tank of Horror) and later this week replacing the old leaky guttering. Most of these views are from our back bedroom window, which looks out on the return. Had a bit of a wobble last week when the return roof was re-roofed with fibre cement tiles, replacing the original (knackered) slates. The builder argued strongly for this - natural slate is much more expensive and 'no-one would see' the return roof. We went along with it and while the job was done well, I didn't expect the tiles to look so thin and flimsy 😬 And we do look out at this roof a lot - I've got my office desk in here and the room gets gorgeous golden evening sun. I'll get used to it I'm sure, and the roof is now watertight and sound, but an important reminder to value (and stick up for!) what you the occupant will see every day. It's not just about creating a good impression for the occasional visitors or passers by! • • • #victoriandublin#victorianrenovation#periodproperty#irishhomes#originalfeatures#slate#periodfeatures#victorianhome#victorianterrace#roofing#restoration#renovation#fromwhereistand#mydailyrenovation
After and Before. A brand new garden space appears. After clearing out the old iris and the gross wood chips, we shaped the new garden out with matching brick. We totally lucked out with fill dirt from the koi pond we dug out yesterday, hauling over 8 wheel barrels worth to fill in the space. We added a organic nutrients and started packing it down. We are beyond happy with the way the new space turned out and are excited to plant some herbs and ground fruit. New grass for the bare spot behind it comes next Saturday too. Needless to say we are beyond happy with the results.
• Bargain Hunt • So much of our furniture has come from; Gumtree, Shpock and eBay. My current favourite though is this Ercol chest of drawers - perfect fit for the alcove, the high ceiling and our many, many clothes! Well worth the investment for something which we use everyday and will be timeless. We got them for nearly £600 less than the retail value (so less than half price) because they have a slight defect on the top right hand side and a crack in the base of the bottom drawer - neither of which we notice (especially when it's full of clothes!)
I love listening to all the laughter, chatter and (sometimes) tantrums that pass under the side windows in our kitchen as kids use the snicket to get to and from our local primary school. Swipe left for the before pics - some strong 80s pelmets that a previous owner hacked out the architrave to install 🙈. All fixed by our lovely builders with new (energy efficient) sash windows and slim double glazing. The windows are restored to their former glory with a new radiator underneath the original sill. #myedwardianhome#sashwindows#architraves#periodfeatures#renovation#kitchenwindows#kitchenwindowsill#edwardianhouse
FEELING GRATEFUL 🏚➡️🏠 Day 16 - I’m grateful I’m doing this project with these two. They make it a lot easier. Not least the fact that Murphy’s tail acts as a feather duster 😂 Saves time cleaning 🤷♀️ @mydailyrenovation
The first photo is the worst part of the whole rewire. That's it. The rest of it looks like the 2nd photo. I was expecting huge gaping holes in our walls when we went back in so this was a very welcome surprise 😄 Victorians made solid walls! Thought I'd share in case anyone else is panicking pre-rewire.
This weekend a group of lovely friends from all over the land have gathered together in the pretty Otter Valley staying at a historical grade 1 listed Elizabethan Manor House. I have loved waking up in this beautiful period bedroom! . . . . . . . . . #periodhomesofinsta#myperiodhome#myperiodhomestyle#elizabethanhouse#manorhouse#freestandingtub#periodhouse#simpleauthenticbeautiful#aconsideredhome#verilymoment#interiorandhome#interiorinspiration#interiorinspo#interieurs#bedroomdecor#everydayelegance#myhappyview#cornersofmyworld#howivintage#periodstyle#storiesofmylife#myeverydaymagic#periodfeatures#grade1listed#beautifulhotelroom#beautifulrooms#simpleauthenticbeautiful#beautifulhouses
Despite the rain, so far we've mostly been making progress in the garden....so much inside is waiting for something else to happen before we can crack on. The back garden is a total gem. We left a standard 'small but perfectly formed' Southsea garden for this 80 footer. We have school behind so not overlooked and although we're in Central Southsea, you feel like you're in the country out back. It's had a good jet wash, cut back, pathways and borders edged and a few new plants added (I bring something back from most trips out!). Nick wants an outdoor kitchen & living area at the end, where the sun sets eventually but for now we can enjoy it as it is...until the back of the house will become a building site once planning gets through 🤣😂
PREMATURE PURCHASE 🏚➡️🏠 Day 15 - I have tonnes of these but none of them were quite as awkward as the magnificent fireplace surround I bought before we even got the keys to the house 😂 I got it off eBay and massively underestimated its size compared to the size of my Ford Fiesta’s boot. So that was a nightmare 🤯. And then when I finally got it home, I had nowhere to put it so it’s sat in the porch of my flat for the past two months... I’m confident it’ll look good when it finally goes to the new house though? 😳😂
📣 #diy ALERT 📣 🤦Recently, it feels like not a lot has been going right (outside of the home). What better way to lift the spirits than to have a go at fixing some of the more manageable tasks around the house?! 🙋 🏎️We hauled ass down to @bandq_uk and @homebargains to grab some supplies because, surely one project will work this weekend?! 🎨🖌️PROJECT NO. 1: Repaint the kitchen tiles and cabinets; let's go from crème brulé to crème bruSLAY We picked up some "difficult surface" primer and undercoat which should cover both the ceramic tiles and the laminate cabinets, from there we will be attempting to paint the tiles #white and the #cabinets a gorgeous #anthracite grey. 💡PROJECT NO.2: Hang the @ikeauk #sinnerlig pendant. We've managed to work out how to wire it in, we just need to drill into the ceiling to attach a hook. From there we need to shorten the wire because at present it looks like we won't be able to get the housing flush with the ceiling- any #advice greatly appreciated!💡 🖤 PROJECT NO.3: Paint the #garden #fence. After feeling greatly inspired by @ahouselikethis I've decided to follow their lead and #paintitblack - we just need a dry day! The end plan is to grow a climbing @david_austin_roses bush and buy a grey corner sofa & table set. At the moment the garden looks a little barren! 🌧️ #lighting#fencepainting#kitchendesign#repaint#interiordecorating#interiordesign#decor#colourscheme#duchessofdanby#periodhome#periodfeatures#terracehouse
Happy Saturday! What are your favourite designed spaces to visit on a night off? We LOVE visiting hotels, bars and restaurants during down time to ogle at the decor for ideas and inspiration. Do you find your best ideas always come to you when you least expect? Usually when we’re relaxing and not thinking about work is when our best ideas come to us! Here is a fab shot by @robyn_swain capturing to fab decor at @opera_grill at our last meet up. Comment below with your favourite spots in the NW 👇🏼
