I cannot day enough good things about the @newseum in DC! Yes, it is a pay museum in a city of free ones, but man it was amazing! It emphasizes our rights as American citizens- free speech, religion, press, assembly and petition. It focuses on American history through the eyes of the press and it is so well done. . . One amazing part were newspaper/magazine articles from almost every major event in American history from the mid 1600’s- present day. What an experience! . . Sadly the Newseum is closing at the end of the year - hopefully to reopen in a cheaper location. So go while you can, this place is a jewel! . . #newseum#washingtondcmuseums#dctravel#dcwithkids#teachkidshistory#neverforgethistory#familytravelblog#takethekids
The Newseum and Freedom Forum Institute are thrilled with this year’s award recipients for the fourth annual Free Expression Awards. The Free Expression Awards convene thought leaders, policymakers and philanthropists to recognize individuals for their courageous acts of, and contributions to, free and fearless expression. The 2019 honorees are: Founder of the ‘Me Too.’ movement @taranajaneen; Academy Award nominee and Emmy, BAFTA and Peabody Award winner @ava; CBS News foreign correspondents Elizabeth Palmer, Debora Patta and Holly Williams; @bobbyberk, @karamo, @tanfrance, @antoni and @jvn, who together co-host the popular @netflix television series, @queereye; and Judy Woodruff, anchor and managing editor of @newshour. These influential supporters of the First Amendment work tirelessly to enhance free speech, freedom of the press, religious freedom and free expression in arts and entertainment. The event will be hosted by @katiecouric. . . . #newseum#museum#event#awards#news#history#journalism#press#metoo#media#queereye#washingtondc#dc
These two poster-sized photographs hang side by side in the Pulitzer Prize exhibit at the #newseum in #washingtondc Seeing the two tragedies that defined my young life displayed in full color when I turned the corner, literally took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes. I still vividly recall how I felt both of those days and in the weeks that followed. I know exactly where I was when I heard that there was an active gunman at Columbine and that the World Trade Center was under attack. Both were being reported on radio. I don’t think I’ll be able to forget these two days as long as I live. #911#columbinemassacre#tragedy#twintowers#wearecolumbine#neverforget#pulitzerprize#photography#photographs
The Pulitzer exhibit at the @newseum is an amazing collection of award winning photographs. Amongst them, are a few by Carol Guzy, the first woman to win the Newspaper Photographer of the Year Award from the National Press Photographers Association in 1990. #carolguzy#newseum#tohodc#becauseofherstory#womenshistorymonth 📸: @pastis_prologue and https://www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/ideas-and-inspiration/carol-guzy.html
I hope everyone is enjoying their Wednesday so far! Check out klassywithkaity.com to see my first ever Travel Diary post! This week I talk about all my favorite things to do when I visit Washington D.C..✨ What are your favorite places to visit?
The #newseum turned out to be the best #museum I have ever spent time in, and I’ve been to a lot of museums. The content was inspiring (the #pulitzer photographs were often heart-breaking) and the interpretative style throughout was the best I’ve ever seen. Completely captivating and the entire day flew by. The #firstamendment (5 parts: freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly and petition) is the focus but changing #communication is also a key element of the museum. The museum is financially struggling so go while you can. #soworthit#berlinwall was on display. Also an #fbi exhibit discussing such things as 9/11 and the #bostonbomber. #dontmissit
I had a great weekend being a tourist in my city and checking out the #newseum. I learned a lot of interesting facts about media and various historical events. I also gained a bit of graphic design inspiration from all the beautiful exhibits. I will definitely be making this a habit. Which museum should I check out next? 🤔
