During our time in Thailand (and also here in Indonesia) we came across a tourist attraction called "The Sea Walkers" almost everywhere we went. What is it, we wondered, that looks like deep sea diving but with corals in the picture? ๐Ÿค” Soon our conservation friends put us into the picture of what it is and what the practices are for those tours...And it was shocking that this even exists still. ๐Ÿ˜• A group of tourists will be brought to a boat just a couple of meters offshore (see picture 2) where they get helmets that are attached to those boats and provide the tourists with oxygen. Then they walk into the ocean and walk over the sea bed, which mostly consists of... Can you guess? Right! Corals! ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ  ๐Ÿค” Why is that a bad thing? ๐Ÿ‘‰ Corals are very sensitive, living beings! And they are already threatened by other human inflicted problems like plastic pollution and the constant warming of our oceans, which kills them. It's called "coral bleaching". There are plenty efforts undergoing in restoring our reefs which take a lot of time and money and they still don't work out all the time. That's how fragile these beings are. And while we know that corals are vital to the well-being of our oceans, there are still companies out there like (what we call them) "The Reef Stompers" to destroy them. And it isn't just one boat, it's up to twenty right next to each other.... on one single island, imagine them scattered around all Thailand. On top of stomping on the reefs, the tour guides cut out pieces of corals to plant them closer to their boat. Needless to say, those unprofessionally moved corals don't survive long and die soon. That's when they garner beautiful for the picture anymore...And the next piece is replanted and so on. So, please avoid all "Sea Walking" activities as they're very destructive! ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’” If you want your underwater picture taken, there are better options! Scuba diving and snorkeling are both way better options! Always remember to
Make sure to swipe through all pictures to see all the cute fur balls! ๐Ÿ˜ Have you ever been to an animal shelter? It's a very heart warming experience in western countries but it's another level in countries where stray cats and dogs almost overpopulate the island. @lantaanimalwelfare gives medical treatment to injured strays and sets them up for adoption. But they also work hand in hand with the local community in raising awareness why sterilization is necessary and provide it low cost to them. They're founded by the owner of a cooking school who wanted her profit to make a positive change and run on donations now. ๐Ÿ‘ As a visitor you will spend much time in Kitty City ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿฌ, where you can enjoy cupcakes, brownies, wraps and coffee that contain zero animal products (because we love all animals ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ’š) and where you can pet all the beautiful kitties. Spend as much time as you want and eat plenty, as all profit goes back to the animals in the shelter. If you're up for a little exercise you can volunteer and walk the dogs (in the morning or afternoon) or help with puppy feeding. After walking the dogs you're invited to spend as much time as you want within the pen and bond with the dogs. They have plenty information about the adoption process and even though Thailand sounds far away, they make it easy for you to help give a dumped doggo or kitty a loving forever home! ๐Ÿ˜ Go, visit Lanta Animal Welfare! It's a beautiful day or half day activity and it only costs you whatever you consume....or decide to donate for the lovely kitties. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #lantaanimalwelfare #shelter #tourism #masstourism #loveallanimals #pets #dogsofinstagram #catsofinstagram #vegan #love #conservation #education #vegancafe #ecofriendly #zerowaste #kitty #kittycity #thailand #animalwelfare #animallover #kolanta #kohlanta #holiday #beachvibe #islandlife #masstourismthailand
Graphic picture alert! ๐Ÿšฉ We'd like to share with you some tragic reasons why to STOP EATING FISH! โŽ๐ŸŸ If you've seen yesterday's post you know we've visited the turtle hatchery with all the cute, innocent baby turtles yet to be released into the wild, their uncertain future. (If you haven't, you should check it out, they're adorable! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿข). The same place also is a sanctuary for turtles that look like the ones in the picture (and way worse but we spared you those sights ๐Ÿ˜ข). As turtle lovers these poor guys just broke our hearts! ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’” These guys are victims of the massive fishing industry. Turtles and other endangered species get caught up in nets. Most of the times they're left to die, thrown back into the ocean more dead than alive, left to their own fate. Other times fishermen show heart and call the researchers of the Phuket Marine Biological Center to give them a chance at the sanctuaries. But still, these turtles will never go back into the wild so they are not available to create new generations of so badly needed baby turtles. ๐Ÿข๐Ÿข๐Ÿข These guys are just one example of so many "behind the scenes" problems of commercial fishing. ๐Ÿšข The only way to STOP this from happening, is STOP consuming fish! There are other, more sustainable sources of healthy omega 3 fatty acids! ๐Ÿƒ And did you swipe to picture 5? What happened to that poor guy? It might be a boat engine strike, leaving this turtle's butt forever float on the surface! ๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ’” ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature @maikhaomarineturtlefoundation #fishing #turtles #poorturtles #trueanimallover #vegan #vegancouple #conservation #love #phuket #seafood #saveouroceans #ecofriendly #govegan #saynotoplastic #nomoreplastic #islandlife #nomadlife #travelblog #ecowarriors #thailand #tourism #seafoodbuffet #plastic #zerowaste #beachcleanup #animalwelfare #animallover
Hi everyone! We're back in Indonesia, we're in Bali! ๐Ÿ˜‰ We still have a lot of posts to share from Thailand but today's activity deserves an instant share. ๐Ÿ’š While taking a stroll along the beach we saw three lovely people picking up trash. We were so happy to see them because he beach was in a horrendous state but didn't bring any garbage bags to start ourselves. Shortly after we joined the small group more and more people dropped in. Soon we were over 20 people spontaneously picking up trash along Echo Beach! With joined forces we managed to clean up a big chunk of the beach! This is the perfect example as to how every single one of us can make a difference! Lead by example! #bethechange It was amazing to see how many people care about the environment here. Not many walked by without helping. Everyone picked up at least one hand full of trash! And that's the only trick! Avoid plastic! And pick up more than you consume! Together, we can really do it! ๐Ÿ’ช Thank you all for joining! Feel free to message us if you helped today and we'll tag you! And are there any Bali peeps out there? We're still here for two weeks! Hit us up! (Or send us info about local conservation efforts we could join!) ๐Ÿ’š ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #togetherwecan #beachcleanup #cleanup #cleanupindonesia #bali #islandlife #islandofdreams #trashisland #love #vegan #nomads #nomadlife #zerowaste #zerowastetravel #plasticfree #nomoreplastic #community #strong #wecare #conservation #ocean #surfing #sunset #echobeachcleanup #echobeach #ecobeachbali
Time for eco tip # 3 and it's such a simple one, yet still connected to the two previous posts as it still relates to food. BYOB! Bring Your Own Bags! Plastic is known by now to be a mass killer. It kills marine life, bird life and also animals on land. ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ’ A recent study has shown that 100% of sea turtles have plastic ingested. ๐Ÿข Thousands of birds eat plastic, feed it to their chicks or die before they can reproduce and make sure there is a next generation. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿฃ It's a really sad and devastating topic but it's so simple to avoid large quantities of plastic with only a little awareness and preparation! ๐Ÿ”ฎ We ourselves never leave the house without shopping bags (besides other helpful accessories, more about them later). They're small and light but you can save so many plastic bags with this little preparation. Even if you forget them at home, don't worry too much. Maybe you can get a reusable bag at store and you bring it again next time. Or you go shopping with a car, then simply bring the shopping cart to the car and put your items into the trunk. No bags needed! And you can say no to bags at any other shop too! No need to put a t-shirt in a plastic bag or a souvenir or your new pair of shoes. Here in southeast Asia, we easily save 5 bags and more... per day! Make the count: How many bags per day or per week could you save by bringing a reusable shopping bag with you? ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #52for2019 #52stepstogreenliving #vegan #love #greensolutions #ecotips #ecofriendly #saynotoplastic #nomoreplastic #forourplanet #vegancouple #inspiration #bethechange #zerowastehome #zerowaste #traveling #worldwide #cleanup #plastic #plasticfree #sustainable #zerowastetravel #oceanlover #beachcleanup #indonesia #thailand
#thecommonsensepeople sources local produce too! #repost @navigatingnature (@get_repost) ใƒปใƒปใƒป A little follow up to eco tip 1 (isn't it crazy how time flies?): eat locally & seasonally !! ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ‰ So whether you decided to jump on the vegan train for January, if you're long term vegan, cutting down on animal products or not... eating locally and seasonally makes a huge difference in your personal contribution to CO2 emission and therefore climate change. ๐ŸŒช Did you know that the 15 biggest container ships alone produce more green house gasses than all the cars on earth? ๐Ÿšข ๐Ÿš˜ While cutting down the mileage with our cars is a known and popular solution, eating locally doesn't seem to be so obvious. We're kicking off our 52 steps to a greener lifestyle with an important message! Join the Veganuary movement and help the planet! โ›”๐Ÿ„๐Ÿƒ It is true that animal agriculture is the biggest contributor to global warming. The emission of the animal agriculture is higher than ALL transport worldwide combined! ๐Ÿš‚๐ŸšŒ๐Ÿš•๐Ÿš˜๐Ÿšข๐Ÿ›ซ ๐Ÿ‘‰ One litre milk uses about 680 litre of water, 1 pound of beef uses 2400 gallons of water, while 1 pound of tofu only uses up 244 gallons. Even though water comes out of your tap, it is in fact a very rare good and vital for everyone to survive! ๐Ÿ’ง ๐Ÿ‘‰ Animal agriculture uses up a lot of room! Instead of eating the crops we grow directly, we decide to feed them to animals. This means we use 20 times more land to feed animals to feed us. This causes massive deforestation and habitat loss for wildlife. ๐Ÿ‘‰ The fish in our supermarkets is caught by commercial fisheries using long line fishing and giant nets to meet fish demand. The ocean's fish population is depleting and endangered species like turtles, sharks, whales and dolphins suffer and die, covered under the name 'bycatch'. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Being vegan saves lives of other sentinent beings and it is good for your own health! ๐Ÿ‘€ Watch the following documentaries that go deeper into the environmental aspect of animal agriculture: ๐Ÿ‘ Food Inc. ๐Ÿ‘ Meat the Truth ๐Ÿ‘ Cowspiracy @cowspiracy ๐Ÿ’š And check out @weareveganuary for inspiration and recipes for your vegan month! With an important message (see picture 4) and a pretty cool activity we'll leave year 2018! We met Nok from @maikhaomarineturtlefoundation to see all their amazing conservation efforts and to meet Phuket's most famous sea turtle: Tommy! ๐Ÿข He is five years old and was born with no eyes, a rising problem in sea turtle population that yet has to be researched. Due to his condition he will never be able to live in the wild, but he can be an ambassador for his entire species and educate many about the threads that endanger their lives. ๐Ÿค“ Together with his sister Kieaw, who was released four times but came back to the same beach over and over again as she lost her guidance ability he lives in the shelter at @jwmarriottphuket . Guests can meet and feed the turtles to get up personal with two of the many reasons ๐Ÿข๐Ÿข why conservation, like reducing plastic and fish consumption, is so important. The hotel itself is quite avant-garde and is already plastic straw free, dims their beach lights at night and even uses water made from the humidity of the air. ๐Ÿ’™ We were honored to feed blind Tommy today, feeling grateful for a big year for us and for many years to come. With conservation we found our destiny and we hope to inspire so many more to do good things for the planet! Because nothing feels better than honest good intentions and actions! ๐Ÿ™ Hope you all have a smooth start into 2019! See you next year! ๐Ÿ˜‰ And remember, always STAY POSITIVE! ๐Ÿ‘Œ ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #seaturtles #phuket #thailand #conservation #breakfreefromplastic #nomoreplastic #plasticfree #gozerowaste #govegan #veganuary #veganuary2019 #happynewyear #happynewyear2019 #byebye2018 #hello2019 #turtles #seaturtles #ะฟั…ัƒะบะตั‚ #ั‚ะฐะนะปะฐะฝะด2018 #ั‚ะฐะนะปะฐะฝะด #holidays #beachvibes #beachcleanup #shelter #vegancouple #travelblog #vegan #zerowaste
Merry Christmas to all our extended friends and family from our little family. ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ We hope you all have some amazing presents under the tree and enjoy the presence of your loved ones! โค As we are physically far away from our loved ones we decided to give some love and affection to some loving beings in need. The @soidogfoundation on Phuket does an amazing job in caring for the countless strays on the island and all around Thailand. They currently have about 550 dogs and 180 cats that are waiting for adoption and another 180 dogs and 150 cats in their on site hospital that (if their condition allows) go back to the streets, tattooed & sterilized! For this week we adopted a run of about 20 dogs that we pet, groom and walk every day. These are our presents / presence With so much love around we make sure we spread it all the way to wherever our friends and family currently are! December, 24th! ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ„ Time for our last eco advent calendar window! This one is all about your own health and well-being. Being eco means for us staying happy and healthy ourselves. So for the holidays we hope you can slow down, relax, unwind, enjoy the time with the family and friends. Don't rush around, take things the way they come, try not to get stressed. Everything will be so much more enjoyable and festive when you take away the expectation of everything being perfect. In the end, little mishaps are the memories and stories you'll tell every year over and over again. Also for your own health, take a break and go out into nature. Enjoy a nice walk, breath in the fresh air and enjoy your surroundings. Watch the light shows at other houses or take a stroll into the woods to take a moment off all the Christmas madness. Whatever makes you happy, do it and enjoy it! With these words we wish you all and very merry Christmas! ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ Thank you @bax_and_julie for this beautiful winter wonderland shot. One day to Christmas! Let's talk about clothes! No matter how little we liked it, there was always at least one soft present under the Christmas tree. ๐ŸŽ Once we get older, though, it seems like we can't get enough clothes. ๐Ÿ’ƒ And obviously we need a new fashionable Christmas jumper for the family each year. ๐Ÿค” Fashion is a huge industry and not much about it is eco friendly. We will get into the clothes matter a little more detailed in the new year. Here are some quick facts: ๐Ÿ‘‰ most clothes contain plastics (e.g. polyethylene) ๐Ÿ‘‰ while washing these plastics shed off and land in our water system as micro plastics ๐Ÿ‘‰ producing clothes produces a lot of emission ๐Ÿ‘‰ clothes are rarely produced in fair condition for the workers With our H&M and Primark fast fashion we contribute to big climate problems. Please don't overdo it for Christmas. You can sweater swap with friends or be bold and wear the same one again and again. Make it your tradition. When you give clothes, make sure their are made fair trade and are made of natural material only. If you want to know more about it you can obviously Google more about it. For now, we leave you with our typical phrase "Choose Wisely!" ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #vegan #fashion #fastfashion #vegancouple #adventcalendar #adventskalender #christmas #christmasjumper #clothes #ecofriendly #microplastics #plasticocean #plasticfree #choosewisely #love #breakfreefromplastic #jumper #weihnachten #travelblog #wanderlust #fortheplanet #fortheoceans #nomoreplastic #refuse #recycle #plastic
Please do not feed any wild animals! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™ There are many wild animals around in Thailand. In the parks we see squirrels ๐Ÿฟ and monitors ๐ŸŠ, in the cities there are plenty pigeons ๐Ÿฆ and in temples there are many monkeys. ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ’ And everywhere we go we see tourists feeding them for the purpose to get a cute animal picture. ๐Ÿช๐Ÿž Feeding wildlife is not a good thing for the animals and while we might think they appreciate the cookies, bread, nuts or whatever in fact it isn't all too healthy for them. ๐Ÿ’€ Besides the animal's health there are a lot more reasons NOT to feed animals. Their behaviour changes. One thing you've noticed at those places is that animals are a lot more aggressive, people complaining about monkeys attacking them. That's all conditioned behaviour as they learned that people have food. They are also a lot more aggressive to each other, which they usually wouldn't be. Babies get violently thrown around by dominant males while trying to grasp the best cookie available. Their natural instinct of searching for natural food almost entirely disappears. By feeding wildlife you make animals that otherwise would be totally fine by themselves dependent on humans. The same happens with any wild animal. So please please stop feeding wildlife!๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™ It is not good for the animals! once again if everyone just gave ONE cookie it is still thousands of cookies each day. Please do not feed any wildlife! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #wildlife #monkeys #love #vegan #vegancouple #cookie #dontfeedtheanimals #monkeys #thailand #chiangrai #chiangmai #breakfreefromplastic #plasticfree #fortheanimals #healthy #tourists #travelblog #wanderlust #backpacker #phuket #ะฟั…ัƒะบะตั‚ #ะฝะฐะผะพั€ะต #ั‚ะฐะนะปะฐะฝะด #ั‚ะฐะนะปะฐะฝะด2018
Christmas is just around the corner, Christmas dinner and a lot of food coming up! ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ Today's Eco Window will be a short and rather simple one. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Skip the disposables at the Christmas table! With Christmas sometimes being a lot more stressful than peaceful and quiet we might tend to the quick and easy solutions and hand out disposable dishes, cups or cutlery to spare us from dishwashing. But the few minutes we spare with dishwashing is a tiny fraction of how long the single use plastic lasts and how long it can harm the environment. ๐Ÿ’š better make your table look festive and go for the silverware and porcelain! And for sure there's always someone who's happy to help with the dishes! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #ecofriendly #breakfreefromplastic #nomoreplastic #plasticfree #zerowaste #christmasdecorations #christmas #eco #zerowasteideas #vegan #vegancouple#love #family #stoptheplastictide #refusesingleuse #refuse #recycle #plastic #reducereuserecycle #reducewaste #bethechange #fortheplanet #weihnachten #adventcalendar #adventskalender
Today we saw a video on social media that inspired us to make a post about. We saw someone talking about the banning of straws and how everyone thinks they save the environment by skipping the straw. Well, yes, kind of. If you're skipping the straw you're already doing a great thing! ๐Ÿ‘ But please don't let it be the only thing you do for the environment! You've adapted a new habit and now it's time to make the next step. โœŠ Refuse more single use! We see big companies being praised for targeting one thing at a time. And don't get us wrong, it's awesome that Lidl eliminates all non recyclable plastic from fresh produce, that McDonald's stops using plastic straws, that 7-11 in Thailand stops using plastic bags. But honestly, this can't be all! We all need to push these large companies to do MORE! It's on us to push them into stricter plastic regulations! Your dollars count! โœŠ Refuse to buy at 7-11 even if they don't give you plastic bags. Literally, every single item at that store is already wrapped in plastic, sometimes in more than one later. (If you go next time, make the test, send us a picture if you find one item without plastic) โœŠ Refuse to go to fast food chains that skip the straw but still use plastic cups and plastic lids. โœŠ Refuse single use cutlery & single use plates. โœŠ stop consuming fish as commercial fishing is responsible for 46% of all ocean plastics and for empty ocean patches aka ocean dead zones! โ“ Why did we choose this pictureโ“ Wat Rong Khun or The White Temple in Chiang Rai is a beautiful, must visit place when in Thailand. The artist Chalermchai Kositpipat also has a beautiful art gallery on site with beautiful Buddhism themed works but also social critical works like this painting that shows how our plastic consumption is part of the global warming. Swipe to see more pictures of the temple! ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #vegan#plasticfree
It's almost Christmas Eve! Time to get all your supplies for the holidays! But watch out for what you buy! Beverages are very important and who wants to only drink water over the festive days? ๐Ÿ˜‚ For sodas especially always keep in mind to by bigger bottles rather than small single serving beverages! You save a lot of waste right there. If you have the options better choose glass than plastic. Even cans are a better option as the aluminum can be more easily recycled. Make sure you recycle the bottles appropriately! Give them little rinse to get rid of any sugar or other residue as that can cause a badge of recyclables not getting recycled. Or give your bottles a second life by making planters, pencil cases, little presents etc out of them. Upcycling is always a great idea to avoid plastic going to landfill! Did you know that only 9% of all plastic ever produced actually got recycled? Everything else still exists in their original form or broken down into tiny pieces floating around in the ocean or landing on beaches where it blends in with the sand. Avoid plastic waste as much as possible! Why not go fancy and make a wine party with some good wines? Buddhist temples are true sources of wisdom! ๐Ÿ™ Unfortunately, we see the truth about this phrase every single day while we fight for animal welfare, animal rights and conservation! ๐Ÿ‘ฟ Many people see animals as nothing but cash cows and cover the hurtful truth before our eyes. Zoos that call themselves research facility while the animals suffer in their tiny cages. Sea life that has "fun"shows for the whole family that are nothing but prisons for dolphins, whales and seals. Even sanctuaries that imply by the name that they are doing great things for the animals become nightmares for elephants, tigers, lions etc. behind the scenes. As conservationists we have to show that a living animal makes more money than a poached animal but still have to make sure that the animal doesn't get exploited and suffers while doing so. These are obstacles we have to overcome because money is everything that counts for so many people. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ We can only ask you to make wiser choices! Do your homework and don't fall for tourist attractions that include animals even if it's just "once in a lifetime". It is NOT just once in a lifetime for the animal, it's their every day suffering you're spending your money on. Projects run on donations rather than ticket or entrance fees are generally honest projects where the animals come first. If you want to make sure that the attraction is ethical we recommend you join a vegan traveling Facebook group and ask there. These groups are full of experienced compassionate travelers who can recommend or not recommend places. Don't let money talk, let the truth and your heart talk! ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #money #donations #animalwelfare #animalrights #animals #animalattraction #elephantriding #elephanttrekking #thailand #travelblog #vegan #veganfortheanimals #vegancouple #conservation #love #facebook #breakfreefromplastic #plastic #truth #travelling #lifestyle #lifestyleblogger #veganlife #buddhism #compassion
Did you know that even your food scraps can be bad if not disposed of properly? ๐Ÿ˜จ Food scraps that end up on landfill cause a lot, A LOT of greenhouse gasses as they can not break down properly due to lack of oxygen. ๐Ÿƒ What can you do? First of all, reduce your food scraps in general. Don't buy more than you can consume, buy only what you like, and keep food beyond the expiry date (do the smell and taste test first!)! ๐Ÿ˜Ž Of course, there will always be scraps especially the more you make from fresh fruit and vegetable (as we urge you to anyway). Surprisingly, many of our 'scraps' are totally edible. Potato ๐Ÿ  and apple ๐Ÿ skin is the most nutritious part and should always be consumed (buy organic! Wash thoroughly!) Carrots only need to be washed, not necessarily peeled. Even banana skin is edible and makes an awesome, nutritious add on in smoothies! Try it! Chop the banana with skin and freeze it, then blend it for some creamy banana ice cream (aka Nice Cream) you will not taste a difference. Buy organic bananas to reduce the risk of harmful pesticides. ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ Many of our scraps can be used for different meals, seeds can be roasted, skins can be cooked as broth, etc. But what to do with actual scraps? You can try home composting! If you have a garden or a small apartment, it doesn't matter. There's a solution for your needs. Just search the internet and find a system that works in the space you've got available. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #ecofriendly #christmas#weihnachten #adventcalendar #adventskalender #christmascalendar #food #christmasfood #foodscraps #compost #homecomposting #vermicompost #green #greensolutions #zerowaste #nofoodwaste #breakfreefromplastic #saynotoplastic #cleanup
If you've been to Thailand before you know about the situation of stray dogs and cats here. There are so many animals living on the street, it's crazy. But as locals treat them nicely, they mostly look happy and healthy. But not all of them and that's why we're so happy to hear that there are shelters taking care of these poor furballs like this one on Koh Phangan, the spiritual crystal island of Thailand. (thanks @sprungwagen for pointing it out to us ๐Ÿ˜‡) @phangananimalcareforstrays is a shelter run entirely on donations and by volunteers with big hearts for animals. ๐Ÿ’ž We happened to be there for a big day for all the dogs as they all got a nice bath and we were welcome to help. ๐Ÿ’˜๐Ÿ• We loved seeing the bond between all the volunteers and the dogs and to see how the dogs thrive from some love, grooming and health care. You are doing such a great job! @happilyhealthyxisau This is another awesome example how you can make a positive change while being on your holiday or travels. You can donate time to shelters like this, they can really need every hand! And if you haven't got too much time to spare you can still visit them during the day and bring some food or money for the surgeries. ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ• ๐ŸŽ Hot tip: if you're still looking for a Christmas present visit their Facebook or Patreon page PACS Phangan and gift someone the joy of helping an animal by donating food, toys or surgeries to this amazing place! ๐ŸŽ With your donation you can help dogs like Bacon, Bernce, Baker, Zoey and so many more! Animal agriculture is the world's biggest contributor to climate change. If you want to have the biggest positive impact on the environment you as a single person can have, choose vegan this Christmas! ๐Ÿƒ It is true! Animal agriculture is the reason for massive deforestation, for crazy amounts of CO2 released into the atmosphere and obviously to a lot of pain and suffering for the animals! ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ– While we could easily feed the entire human population on a plant based diet, we decide to let 1 billion people (a sixth of the world's population) suffer from hunger of which 36 million die of hunger...each year. ๐Ÿ˜ซ Protein deficiency is the bigest misconception about veganism. The truth is that for 100g of plant based protein that we can produce, animal agriculture only manages to get about 20g of protein out of it. Why is that? Animals need space and need food. So instead of eating plant based ourselves we feed animals that then have to convert the plants into muscles & fat (=meat). Our body just as any animal's body is capable of extracting protein from plants. ๐Ÿ’ช Try it with a vegan roast, more vegetables, less dairy and less eggs this year. It also helps your cholesterol as a plant based diet doesn't contain ANY cholesterol. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #vegan #vegancouple #veganchristmas #veganroast #veggies #ecofriendly #animalwelfare #animalrights #animalagriculture #worldhunger #love #traveler #vegantravels #veganeats #whatveganseat #christmas#weihnachten #adventcalendar #adventskalender #liebe #aroundtheworld #sustainable #food
Never forget to play your part! ๐Ÿ’ช Just a #5minutesbeachcleanup can make such a big difference! Look at how much Nadine managed to collect just within 5 minutes. 3 plastic bags full of trash that doesn't end up in the ocean to harm wildlife! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿข Have you ever thought about how harmful plastic actually is? Imagine this: a bird ingests so much plastic that he starves to death. But as the dead bird breaks down and only it's skeleton is left behind, the plastic does not degrade! It's still there and could potentially be eaten by by the next bird to come. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿฃ So every plastic bottle, bag or straw you take out of the ocean means saving more than one animal! This is why every little bit helps!! Keep it up guys! Show us your trash collection! Not long and it's time to travel to your loved ones or your loved ones to travel to you! We all know traveling far distances can cause a lot of CO2 emission! Of course, we all want to visit our family and see them, that's why not going is not an option and we would never ask you not to go! Spend time with your loved ones, relaxed quality time. Try to avoid traveling by plane! Planes are terrible for our eco system and the emission per person per flight is incredible. Better options are your car or even better: the train! Most run on electricity now, not on Diesel anymore and are a truly eco friendly transportation. If you have to travel by car because there is no train available, offer others a ride. Shared transportation can easily cut the emission down to a half or even a quarter. The more people travel in one car the less emission. And another positive side effect? The roads are emptier, the less cars travel which makes the traffic more fluent and that again saves fuel! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #ecofriendly #eco #travel #travelblog #christmas #flyinghomeforchristmas #snow #traffic #zerowastetravel #zerowaste #vegan #vegancouple #bethechange #wisechoices #fortheoceans #fortheanimals #whitechristmas #imdreaming #together
The last lesson the wise Wayne Phillips taught us was how to turn trash into something useful, into new life. We collected all the energy drink bottles that we found abundantly. We found out that there are barely any beer bottles out there as you can bring them back and get money for them. (Which is a successful deposit system for plastic, glass and cans in Germany by the way! ๐Ÿ˜‰) And we turn them into so called Frags! Put the sea glass into a concrete style block and 'plant' them in the ocean where they will become a home for corals and turn into a healthy reef. It's genius, and it shows that we can make the best out of the worst situation with just a little imagination! ๐Ÿƒ ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #frags #ecofriendly #reef #healthy #ocean #oceanlover #vegan #vegancouple #veganlove #love #zerowaste #zerowastetravel #thailand #pattaya #trash #plasticocean #recycle #upcycle #bethechange #inspiration
Nothing's better than a cosy cup of tea at home in the cold season! ๐Ÿต This year, start changing your tea habits into eco friendly tea sippin. ๐Ÿƒ Did you know that many (most) tea bags contain plastic?  So if you want to go waste free it's time to buy loose leaf tea and use a metal tea infuser or brew your tea in a pot. Besides this there are many things that aren't eco friendly about your cuppa that's why you should keep an eye on the following aspects: ๐Ÿ‘‰ Pick the tea that traveled the least distance as shipping emits a big amount of greenhouse gases. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Choose organic and fair trade to help the tea growing communities and the land it is harvested on. A tea tree is just a plant like any other. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Compost your brew! The leaves are still full of nutrients that can help the eco balance in your home compost and that provide great nutrients for your compost soil later. ๐ŸŽ Still looking for a gift? We'd like to share an uncomfortable fact with you today ๐Ÿ˜• In fact 50% (or more) of ocean plastic are fishing nets and other fishing gear. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ We just don't really see it as beaches are more littered with the light weight plastic that gets washed back ashore. And out of sight, out of mind, right? ๐Ÿ‘€ But there are miles long ghosts nets out there with hooks still attached. And they are as spooky as it sounds ๐Ÿ‘ป Fish, turtles, sharks, whales get entangled in leftover nets and starve to death. This is very uncomfortable, isn't it? We love that you're skipping the straw and that you tackle the plastic bag, cutlery, cups, lids etc. You're doing an amazing job and every little bit helps! ๐Ÿ‘ So what can we do about ghost nets? What about skipping the fish in order to save the fish? (And still skipping the straw to save the fish! ๐Ÿ˜Š) Mass fishing is number one reason for ocean dead zones and depletion of marine wildlife. ๐Ÿ‘‰ One because they fish everything (bycatch!) ๐Ÿ‘‰ two because they leave their broken or old nets. Try reducing your fish consumption, especially when you don't live coastal or have no idea where your fish comes from. It must've traveled a far way and is probably even caught illegally where fish life can't restock and where bycatch isn't monitored. ๐Ÿ˜’ A thing like "sustainable fishing" doesn't really exist anymore, it's just marketing and money talking. ๐Ÿ˜• ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #govegan #plastic #fisheries#fishing #marineconservation #wildlife #depletion #racingextinction #turtles #vegan #breakfreefromplastic #plasticocean #plasticfree #plastic #facts #sadfacts #reality #travelblog #extinction #oceandeadzones #ocean #beachvibe #zerowaste #zerowastehome #lowimpact #sustainable #sustainablefishing

In Thailand there is so much to report about. Today we would like to look back to the time when we went out with Dr. Wayne Phillips and his research students. Wayne is a well known conservationist in the Bangkok / Pattaya area and his work is huge! One thing he does is beach cleanups to sort through the waste he finds and to categorize it into different species. ๐Ÿ•ต What can we learn from that? We know what plastics are out there. And guys, let us tell you, it's not only water and soda bottles. Don't forget the toiletries in your bathroom! ๐Ÿ˜ต Shampoo. Shower gel. Conditioner. Make up. Lotions. Toothpaste. Etc. All these come in plastic bottles which is waste that we can and SHOULD reduce! ๐Ÿ‘‰Shampoo and shower gel can be purchased as bars, so they only come wrapped in paper. ๐Ÿ‘‰Conditioner should be omitted entirely as it contains harmful chemicals and can not be made naturally. ๐Ÿ‘‰Lotions can be swapped out with all natural coconut oil. ๐Ÿ‘‰Make up and toothpaste can be made at home with all natural ingredients. Find recipes on Google and play with it until you find one that suits your needs. ๐Ÿ’Have a look in your bathroom, how many plastic bottles do you have in only that one room? How many do you think you could reduce to with some eco friendlier choices? Let us know what you struggle with and we can help you find a solution for it! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #ecofriendly #eco #ecowarriors #research #species #endangeredspecies #plasticfree #plasticocean #beachcleanup #breakfreefromplastic #plastic #diy #cosmetics #fashion #fortheoceans #turtles #love #travelblog #conservationist #naturelover #vegan #vegancouple #vegantravels #zerowaste #lowimpact
Choose eco friendly gift wrapping this year! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ Look at the picture above. Shame on us, this is an actual picture I took about 8 years ago, when I didn't care about the environment. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ I didn't know and wasn't aware of the impact this massive amount of wrapping had! Being ashamed of my old behaviour I would now like to share better ideas with you and encourage you to make a better choice this year for your own gift wrapping! ๐Ÿ’๐ŸŽ There are several ideas on how to wrap your presents more eco friendly. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Give less presents. This is just a reminder of our past three posts about how you can give something without giving a physical thing. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Wrap them in a cotton cloth or cotton bag. The cloth then can be used as kitchen towel or can be reused over and over again as gift wrapping. ๐Ÿ‘‰ We'd prefer the cloth or bag option but if you really want to go for paper wrapping choose 100% recycled and recycable paper. There are beautiful recycled paper manufacturer out there that make paper from mulberries, elephant poop or other natural materials rather than trees. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #christmas #presents #wrapping #preparation #christmascalendar #adventskalender #adventcalendar #advent #weihnachten #recycle #reuse #refusesingleuse #refuse #saynotoplastic #nomoreplastic #breakfreefromplastic #oldpicture #throwback #throwaway #paper #regrets #love #lookingback #bethechange #inspiration
A couple of days ago we've seen a post in a Facebook sailing group. It was someone who asked if anyone has ever sailed through or has seen the 'plastic islands', suggesting that they aren't real or that pictures are biased / doctored. โ›ต Together with a lot of others we jumped in and shared our experiences. We went through our portfolio of pictures back from our stay in Jayapura, Indonesia and showed everyone what we have witnessed first hand. ๐Ÿ’ Tons and tons of plastic going into the ocean, every single day. High tide brought it in, low tide took it out. Twice a day we've been surrounded by huge patches of plastic. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ Yes, these are the islands everyone is talking about and yes, they are real! These 'islands' are a figurate speech, you can't walk on them. But then again, once you've seen them with your own eyes, you can't help but call them islands! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ With this picture Nadine tried to show how dense these garbage patches are, this was what she fished out with just one single grab! Trust us, when we say the situation is severe! And trust us when we say it's not only the Indonesians or the South East Asians! It's every single one of us who contributes to this! (Note: it is not easy to sail to the 'plastic islands' as the plastic is taken there by strong currents that a sail boat has difficulties navigating through!) ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #endplasticpollution #breakfreefromplastic #zerowaste #why #fortheoceans #love #turtles #plastic #plasticisland #nomoreplastic #nomoreplasticislands #travelblog #reality #biased #news #worldnews #vegan #indonesia #jayapura #sailing #awareness #kindness #vegancouple
Sweets are a very important part in the advent time. We all allow ourselves the one or the other treat more during the festive time. ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿญ We don't ask you not to enjoy or indulge during that special time of the year. how could we? ๐Ÿค The only thing we ask you is to make more eco friendly choices. ๐Ÿ’š There certainly are several brands out there who spend a lot of time and money on producing more sustainably sourced treats than others. Their products might be more expensive in some cases but it comes with the feeling of doing something good, rather than exploiting other people or Mother Nature. ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ„ There are three things we'd like you to focus on. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Fair trade cacao: help stopping the exploitation of people behind the chocolate industry. Buy fair trade to help small farmers in poor countries (=the chocolate producing countries) raise their quality of life and give their children the chance for education. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Sustainably sourced palm oil: While a temporary boycott of palm oil might be a good idea to sharpen your senses on what products contain the world's cheapest vegetable oil, we don't urge you to drop palm oil completely. It is still the most efficient oil our planet produces. If we switch to other oils even huger patches of forests had to be destroyed. So look out for RSPO certified sustainable palm oil. (Small advice: Unilever, Nestlé and Mondelez, the three biggest food producers are known to use NON SUSTAINABLY sourced palm oil! ๐Ÿ˜ก) ๐Ÿ‘‰ Vegan sweets: Animal agriculture is the world's biggest contributor to climate change because of the greenhose gas emission it causes. You can avoid this by buying vegan treats. Big plus: many vegan companies also focus on fair trade and sustainability = triple PLUS! :) What are your favorite eco friendly treats? ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #ecofriendly #vegan #chocolate #christmas #sweets #food #foodforthought #palmoil #iceland #adventcalendar

In case our experience gifting or donation presents didn't really resonate with you or in case you still want something physical as a vessel for your other gift, we've got the ultimate eco friendly idea. ๐ŸŽ€ One thing that we can't stop preaching about, is that education and inspiration are our greatest 'weapons' in conservation. ๐Ÿ™Œ You as someone who is educated about and interested in the hazards to our Mother Nature can jump on that train and make a huge impact with your presents. How many presents do you feel like you have to buy this year? 5? 10? 20?? (Wow, you must be popular! ๐Ÿ˜œ ) What if everyone of these gets a bamboo tooth brush (@re4reef ), a bamboo straw (@bamboolao4564 ) an a set of bamboo cutlery (@patagonia ) ๐Ÿ‘‰Or what about personalized cutlery that you can carry in your bag and avoid single use equivalents? (Check out @lovepunched for some really cute recycled metal cutlery with personal messages) And even if you don't get your hands on something alike, you can still avoid buying "useless" gifts by making them yourself. DIY is our favorite and can be a great way to recycle unwanted things. We personally think that DIY is one of the most valuable things anyway. It shows that someone took a lot of their free time to think about what to gift and to make it themselves, rather than just hit the shopping mall (or online shop) and grabbed the first thing they could find.โฐ ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #ecofriendly #reusable #refusesingleuse #vegan #vegancouple #bamboo #bamboostraw #bamboocutlery #bambootoothbrush #bambooeverything #breakfreefromplastic #gifts #christmas #weihnachten #plastic #zerowaste #zerowastetravel #love #travelblog #islandlife #beachvibe
Tropical zero waste hydration! ๐Ÿ’ฆ Yesterday we talked about how you can stay hydrated while being zero waste and living on a budget. But what if you don't have your bottle with you? There is one thing that you can find just as often in Thailand as a 7-11: someone selling coconut! Coconuts are the healthiest way to stay hydrated in this tropical climate. And the best is they're all plastic free and low impact! ๐Ÿ™ You can drink it with you reusable straw or you can just drink it out of the shell. Seriously, how did you think people drank it just 50 years ago? No one needed straws. But now we have metal straws so that's fine, use it. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Besides the straw we also always carry our bamboo cutlery set with us. We have a set from @patagonia that we bought over a year ago in the U.S. and that's still in top shape. It's fork, spoon, knife and chopsticks. And the best is it came in a little pouch with a hook to easily attach it to the backpack. BUT Thailand travelers! Worry not! Bamboo cutlery is available quite abundantly here. You can find it for roughly 40 baht per piece on every local market and even in many modern coffee shops etc. (Way cheaper than Patagonia. ๐Ÿ˜‰) And there you go. With a little preparation you get waste free hydration for cheap (20-40 baht per coconut) everywhere you go! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #coconut #tropics #tropical #island #islandlife #beach #beachvibe #zerowastetravel #zerowaste #healthy #fit #water #veganeats #vegan #vegancouple #travelblog #love #conservation #grateful #breakfreefromplastic #nomoreplastic #nomadlife #foodprep #lowimpact #wildlife #bethechange #lostinthailand
A follow up idea to our advent calendar window yesterday. ๐Ÿ˜‡ Christmas is the time of love and compassion. We gave you a couple of ideas how you can gift something without having to buy a thing. ๐ŸŒ„ Here is how you can show deep compassion and love to not only the ones close to you, but for people or animals who are in need. ๐Ÿ’• Together with your kids, you could set up a piggy bank ๐Ÿ– where they collect their Christmas money that they've gotten from all their loved ones and that they could (partially) donate for a charity. You can give your kids some tips on organisations and what they do and let them decide what projects they would like to fund. This way the kids learn so much more. They learn that there are animals and people, who don't have such a happy Christmas. They learn to show compassion and get to decide where they want to help. They learn about things that really matter, to them and to the environment / humanity. But what else do they learn? They learn that sharing can be extremely rewarding. ๐Ÿ˜ Try and find a good cause near you and let the kids hand over their donations in person. Their eyes will glow of joy and pride that their money helped making someone else happy. It can also work perfectly as a present between adults. There are many conservation projects that have special Christmas bundles. How about you and your partner adopt a Tasmanian Devil or a Kiwi this year? Maybe your fave co worker needs some cute sloth pictures over the year that you could gift them by 'adopting' a sloth in Costa Rica? Or how about watching a former stray dog in Thailand thrive thanks to the money you otherwise would've spent on the 100th candle for neighbour XY? There are numerous projects like that out there, there's definitely the right one for your loved ones. Show them that sharing is caring, and that happiness is the only thing that multiplies when you divide are it :) And if you want to actually see Dearfox ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ‘† and his friends thrive in
This is our hottest tip for Thailand! ๐Ÿ”ฅ Don't buy overpriced bottled water that is packed with toxins leeching in from the plastic! Bring your own bottle and refill it at one of the countless water stations available all over Thailand! Instead of 20 baht/ltr you pay 1 baht or sometimes only 0,5 baht per litre! This price is unbeatable. Unfortunately, not many tourists know about these machines that work with reverse Osmosis and that they produce totally safe drinking water for dirt cheap (see, what we did there? ๐Ÿ˜‰). So let's spread the message! ๐Ÿ”Š Once you've developed an eye for these machines you'll find them almost on every corner. Obviously not next to a 7-11 as they still want to sell their bottled water. ๐Ÿ˜   The machines are quite big and come in all kind of different themes, pandas, pokemon, hello kitty, but mostly rather plain. Fact is: we didn't have to buy a single bottle of water here. Please, everyone in Thailand, use this service provided and spare the environment your daily 4 water bottles (assuming an average 2 litre consumption of 0,5 litre bottles)!! ๐Ÿ™ This eco friendly swap is so easy and saves you soooo much money! ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #ecofriendly #thailand #water #waterislife #ะฟะฐั‚ั‚ะฐะนั #phuket #phangan #breakfreefromplastic #noplastic #saynotobottledwater #zerowaste #bethechange #wisechoices #befree #travelonabudget #budget #budgettravel #lowimpact #sustainable #sustainabletravel #nature #plasticocean #solution #easy #love #vegan #staypositive #tattoo
Christmas has long become a fest more materialistic and stressful rather than what is used to be, a festive, special time together with your family. In order to bring it a little closer to its roots, today's tip is about the Christmas presents. ๐ŸŽ Every year we put ourselves in enormous stress just to find the perfect gifts for our loved ones. We spend time thinking what they want, thinking if what we've found is enough, thinking if they will like it, thinking if they appreciate the time we spent finding this gift. ๐Ÿค” What if we used the time that we would spend finding and buying a physical present with the person who's supposed to receive that present? Don't you think especially in nowaday's busy and hectic lives TIME as a present is of much more value? ๐Ÿ’› What about a delicious home made brunch at your house with your best friends? What about a night in the movies with your Mom? What about a walk in the park with your Dad? What about a hike with your bf? This works for kids as much as it does for adults. In fact, kids get quickly overwhelmed by too many physical presents. ๐Ÿ˜ต It is proven that it is healthier for kids to only receive very few toys rather than a dozen or even more. 12 days to Christmas, time to send all the Christmas cards! ๐Ÿ“จ Are you still sending cards? ๐Ÿ“ซ This lovely tradition unfortunately has a big impact on the environment. Each Christmas season 300.000 trees are being chopped down and turned into the 2 billion cards that get sent during Christmas season....only in the US! ๐ŸŒฒ We understand that this is a beautiful tradition and hand written messages certainly have a big value in our busy online lives nowadays. ๐Ÿ’“ If you still want to go for the classic handwritten message, please choose eco friendly cards, made of 100% recycled paper. Or what about some beautiful cards made of recycled elephant poop? ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’ฉ (check a couple of posts back for reference) Stay away from bleached paper cards that also come wrapped in plastic. This is double negative impact on the environment! ๐Ÿ˜• Instead of sending a card you can use our modern technology. ๐Ÿ“ฒ Send an e-card. It's also a lot faster and maybe more reliable in some places ๐Ÿ˜† Make a phone call. โ˜Ž While hand written messages have value as someone actually sat down and took the time to write something nice, we could also call and send our season's greeting this way. It definitely shows you care and it's always nice to catch up with our friends or family on the phone. Good thing is, you spare two cards sent with one phone call as the recipient doesn't need to send you one either. ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #christmas #christmascard #ecofriendly #eco #breakfreefromplastic #savepaper #savethetrees #forest #wildlife #zerowaste #zerowasteideas #vegan #recycle #diy #love #weihnachten #festive #cards #nomoreplastic #lesswaste
Throwback to when we went to The Flight Of The Gibbon where we've seen their approach to stop plastic bottled water, where we went on a gorgeous hike with their team to set up a new trap cam and to check the footage of the past month. ๐Ÿค— Picture 5: there are two yellow martens. Can you find both? This was the quick sum up of the 5 pictures in this post. Read on for a little more information. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Flight of The Gibbon is one of the top things to do in Asia for more than the reason that's is a incredibly fun day of ziplining! As we've talked about mass tourism going wrong yesterday we were truly delighted to see "mass tourism" done right at this place! โ˜ First things first: Zip lining through a forest with wild gibbons is a very unique experience that you most likely won't be able to witness anywhere else as gibbons are one of the most endangered ape species on this planet. ๐Ÿ™ˆ A sustainably set up of the ziplines and the platforms allows the forest to grow almost entirely undisturbed while we as tourists can still have fun in this wild, natural forest. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒด On top of that, the project behind Flight Of The Gibbon uses their profits to operate a conservation project that helps with the reforestation of the area where only 40 years ago there wasn't any forest left, and therefore no habitat for the wild gibbons. ๐Ÿ˜ข They also reduce their own plastic waste by offering water in reusable glass bottles at lunch, encouraging all cafes in the neighborhood to stop using plastic mugs and work with the Thai navy on planting mangroves on the coast of Thailand. This is how tourist's money should be used! To truly get a value for local community and wildlife out of it! @flightofthegibbon we salute you for your amazing conservation work! ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ›ฉ๐Ÿ’ #flightofthegibbon #lostinthailand #wildlife #habitatloss #reforestation #masstourism #love #thailand #conservation #travelblog #vegancouple #vegantraveler #vegan
Clean green! (Not a very festive picture ๐Ÿ˜‚) As Christmas includes a lot of food and home cooking, there is a lot of cleaning involved. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ Ever thought of your cleaning supplies being bad for the environment? ๐Ÿ˜ต Not only are most soaps and cleaners heavily packaged, most of them are made with harmful chemicals. Harmful for the environment, animals and for yourself. โš   These chemicals are phosphorous, nitrogen and ammonia and they are regularly found in our cleaning products, especially dish washing soap. After cleaning our dishes, we wash them down the drain where it contaminates waterways. This harms the environment and wildlife. ๐Ÿ’€ Please buy eco friendly alternatives or make your own. White vinegar and lemon are seriously miracles of nature ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿ’ช And what do we clean with? Do you still use the yellow-green sponge to clean your dishes? Time to make a switch. These terrible sponges shed their plastic fibres into the drain where they end up as micro plastics in our waterways. To put it in other words: Using a plastic sponge is basically like grinding up a plastic bag or plastic bottles and flush it down the toilet! This is not where it belongs! ๐Ÿ‘ฟ There are eco friendly sponges available that are made of bamboo or other natural materials. Or you cut up an old cotton shirt and use it for cleaning. The advantage of this version is that you can reuse it endlessly by just washing it (with your new eco friendly washing liquid or powder). ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #love #cleangreen #dishes #sponges #eco #ecofriendly #breakfreefromplastic #refusesingleuse #nomoreplastic #vegan #vegancouple #christmas #food #advent #natale #navidad #weihnachten #zerowaste #bethechange
Mass tourism creates mass problems. Does this look like a relaxed beach holiday to you? ๐Ÿ– A couple of weeks ago while we joined a group of researchers we went to the beautiful island of Koh Sak in the Gulf of Thailand. While we spent half a day picking up endless plastic trash we couldn't help but notice something else. ๐Ÿ‘€ We were there watching thousands of tourists coming in speed boats, taking quick jet ski rides, joining the Sea Walkers and leaving their trash behind. The island simply can't take all of this of its 3000 daily visitors. This is just one example of many in the tourist business. ๐Ÿ˜ณ Mass tourism creates several problems, amongst them are: ๐Ÿ‘‰ disturbance of wildlife ๐Ÿ‘‰ habitat loss of wildlife ๐Ÿ‘‰ destroying corals ๐Ÿ‘‰ litter & excessive plastic trash There are many ways you can enjoy beautiful spots without having such a big impact on the environment. Please, before you go on holidays, do your homework and avoid disappointment like this! ๐Ÿ‘ Follow us for eco friendly travel tips, projects who protect nature with the purchase of your ticket, rather than destroying it. ๐Ÿƒ Feel free to message us to find a place suitable for you, we love sharing our experiences (and our fails so others don't make the same mistakes ๐Ÿ˜•) ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature #evowarriors #vegan#vegancouple #travelblog #inspiration#love #tourism #islandlife #conservation #lovenature #breakfreefromplastic #beachcleanup #beautiful #beach #bethechange #holidays #makewisechoices #thailand #backpacker #roadlesstraveled
Christmas bakery! A classic! ๐Ÿช No need to buy factory made cookies. โ˜ You don't know what's going in there. And they usually come heavily packed in plastic. Sometimes several layers for a single cookie. ๐Ÿ˜’ If you don't have the time to make cookies yourself but you really love Christmas cookies, then hit up a closeby Christmas market where neighbours, friends or local bakeries sell their homemade creations. Many times they are for charity and you also help a good cause with this. ๐Ÿ™Œ But if you have the time, enjoy making your own! They can be a fun activity with your friends or family and you get to decide what goes into them and ultimately into you! ๐Ÿƒ ๐Ÿ‘‰ Choose healthy local ingredients. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Skip palm oil as it's the reason for massive deforestation and habitat loss for wildlife. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Our best tip is to make vegan cookies! In most cases you won't taste a different to 'normal' ones or they even taste better as you don't have the animal cruelty in them. It's true that a plant based, vegan diet is the single most effective way to reduce your carbon footprint and to combat climate change. For further details please check pages like @livekindlyco or watch documentaries like @cowspiracy . They'll truly change your view on animal products. ๐Ÿ„ So, opt for plant based options and skip butter and egg for baking. Easy swaps: margarine or vegetable oil instead of butter, and flax seed instead of eggs! ๐Ÿ‘ Nadine actually made cookies herself her entire life. So, if you need yummy vegan recipes feel free to message us. ๐Ÿ“จ What are your favorite Christmas cookies? Have you ever tried to veganize them? Today the Chiang Mai Design Week started! And while we believe that there are plenty great artists and designers who show their amazing work, we really recommend you do not miss @bope_bopeshop ! A couple of days back we already made a post about them and how they made Michelangelo's David out of recycled plastic. ๐Ÿšฎ Today we would like to show you more about the process. And once you know how eco friendly their project is you should head there and get your hands on some of their coasters or key chains. Every purchase helps reducing plastic waste! โ™ป In order to make their unique recycled coasters they melt 70g of shredded plastic pieces (an out 20 bottle caos) and press it into custom made metal molds. After a waiting time of one minute or two the plastic cooled down and hardened enough to drill the piece out. And tadaaaa ๐ŸŽŠ you've got a freshly made coaster (or key chain) that saved the plastic from ending up in landfills or (worse) the ocean. They also experiment with other shapes like tiles, planters, lamp shades etc. Just imagine how many household products we could replace with this method! Instead of producing it out of virgin plastic nurdles, we could use plastic waste and reduce the massive amount that ends up in landfills! ๐Ÿ™Œ The great part about this is: if you're not in Thailand to purchase some of Bope's products you can easily set this up wherever you are. For more information please visit the @realpreciousplastic homepage. And check out their interactive world map. Christmas decoration is so important to get us into the festive mood. ๐Ÿ˜ You should know us by now, so what is our #1 tip? Don't buy new decoration! ๐Ÿ‘† Reuse it from year to year. The theme is always the same, right? Red, green, white, many Santas, many snowmen, trees, candy cane etc. You only see it once a year anyway. So no need to get bored. ๐Ÿ˜‡ Like with the ornaments (Window 3) choose long lasting material and go for the classics rather than 'trendy' decoration which would change year to year. If you need new decoration, there are three options: ๐Ÿ‘‰ buy second hand ๐Ÿ‘‰ swap with neighbours ๐Ÿ‘‰ Make your own We love DIY! You can upcycle and reuse your 'waste', such as toilet paper rolls, fabric, etc and you can add natural material like wood, pine cones, tree branches, leafs etc. Make it a fun day with your friends, family, partner or kids and create your own decoration. When you use natural material it can end up in the compost and create yero waste. And with decoration always keep in mind: Less is more! ๐Ÿ‘† ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #ecofriendly #breakfreefromplastic #minimalism #plastic #christmastree #christmas #weihnachten #navidad #noel#natale #adventcalendar #plastic #thailand #vegancouple #vegan #christmasdecorations #dontbuy #recycle #diy #refusesingleuse #ocean #conservation #nomadlife #diving #home #winter #decoration #homemade
Life hacks for a simple zero waste travel experience! ๐Ÿ˜ BYO! Bring your own is the simplest way of avoiding single use plastic. ๐Ÿ‘ Bring your own bottle, straw and bag. For mango sticky rice, bring your own container! ๐Ÿš Most of the vendors make the portions on site, they peel the mangoes and they scoop the rice into a plastic container. We handed them our food containers and they happily filled it with a huge portion of the Thai favorites! That way you don't have to restrict yourself from buying at a local market. ๐Ÿ‘ If you haven't got your reusable travel container yet, we recommend you get a stainless steel one as they last longer and are more eco friendly than our plastic version. ๐Ÿ˜‰ What are your favorite zero waste hacks? With Christmas season we love making our home cozy. Many times this includes a nice fragrance that we associate with Christmas. Or with warmer days for those who don't like the cold, festive season so much. As we've explained in our Advent Calendar window 4, not all candles are safe to breath when we light them and those with fragrance are even worse. Read this from ecopedia "Soot is dangerous. Candles produce soot which can irritate the lungs. Scented candles are especially harmful as they release dangerous chemicals, such as benzene that is linked to the onset of neurological problems. More than just a fragrance. Phthalates that are often found in scented candles are known as chemicals that disrupt the hormones in the body." So what can we use instead? ๐Ÿค” You can buy eco friendly incense which is made of bamboo. The amount you need usually is also a lot less as the smell is a lot more intense. They also come in many different fragrances. We're a big fan of the classic as we find them many times here in Thai temples. ๐Ÿ˜ You can boil some spices. You'd be surprised how easy you can make your home smell nice. Heat up some orange juice with spices like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves etc. It will make your home smell nice and Christmassy. And best: you can drink it! Same with many loose teas, you can boil them in a pot which has the same effect. Our favorite for that always was Chocolate Chai, you should try it :) You can use old school, eco friendly pot pourri. It's easily home made by collecting and drying your favorite flowers and you can add spices you like. It might need some experimenting to find your favorite fragrance. In the internet you already find plenty of 'recipes' for good mixtures. If it's too late now to find fresh flowers you can also buy them in many eco friendly and zero waste stores. Last but not least, a very easy way to make an eco friendly fragrance is to poke some holes into a mandarin, stick in some cloves and your home will quickly
Thai fruit! Undoubtedly the best of the best! ๐Ÿ‰ So sweet and fresh and....natural? ๐Ÿค” Unfortunately not as you can see in the picture above. Convenience stands above everything here and fruit come almost exclusively in single serving sized plastic packaging. The stand in the picture actually sells smoothies. You pick your favorite combination hand it over and they blend it for you. Brilliant idea, right? Unfortunately our wildlife wouldn't agree with you! We think it's pretty stupid that our convenience is more important than the health of our planet. Choose wisely, if you want a smoothie, pick a place that sells it in glass or let them fill your water bottle that you should always carry around. If you want a peeled and cut piece of fruit make sure you bring your own container and get that filled. For us, the best option is simply to bring a reusable shopping bag. We buy fruit in whole (see pictures 2&3). We think it's also way more rewarding. Have you ever opened a Jackfruit? Surely with electricity widely available it makes sense to switch from candles, especially those made from earth unfriendly petroleum, to lights. ๐ŸŽ„ And aside from inside decorations there seems to be an entire competition on outside light shows and Christmas tree lights in many places. The more and the crazier the better. But is this still eco friendly? ๐Ÿค” It can be. ๐Ÿ”ฆ So first of all, it's time to switch to low emission LED lights. They're now available in every color and shape possible. They even make ones that look and flicker like real candles. ๐Ÿ•ฏ Long time they were only available in cold, blueish white, which wasn't for everyone. Luckily, this changed and you can get your romantic flair with low energy bulbs now as well. ๐Ÿ’š Obviously it also reduces the hazard of a fire. ๐Ÿ‘ And also obviously all those LED lights come in and made of plastic. So be cautious with what you buy and how much. ๐Ÿ‘† Hot tip: check second hand shops ahead of and after the season! The eco footprint producing the LEDs might sound like a lot, and it is a lot. But with annual use for many many years, the low emission compared to ordinary lights actually saves you energy and there have a better carbon footprint. Just make sure you use them as long as possible. LEDs last way longer than old fashioned bulbs. For those with a spectacular light show outside and inside, here is the energy saving tip: use a timer. Only let the lights switch on after sunset and switch them off once there is most likely not many spectators anymore that you need to impress with your lights. So maybe around 10-11 pm. How do you light up the dark season? What other eco tips did we forget concerning lights & candles? ๐Ÿ˜‡ ๐Ÿ“ท Photo Credit: unknown ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #ecofriendly #eco #vegan #minimalism #refusesingleuse #recycle #energy #saveenergy #energiesparen #lights #christmas#christmastree #adventcalendar #breakfreefromplastic #nomoreplastic
The Chiang Mai design week @chiangmaidesignweek is coming up and if you're going you shouldn't miss @bope_bopeshop ! โ˜ A couple of days ago we were lucky enough to meet Pemika and her partner who started this amazing art project. Just like ourselves they were concerned about the amount of plastic trash and started to do something about it. ๐Ÿ™… They collected their neighbourhood's trash ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ  and wanted to recycle it properly. As the facilities and the mixed species of plastic didn't really allow the plastics being sold for recycling they soon had to come up with a new idea. Fact: only 9% of all plastics worldwide ever got recycled! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ In the internet they found out about Precious Plastic @realpreciousplastic and soon made their own machines. They now have the facilities to recycle their own plastic products. And they already have enough plastic to keep going for over 20 years! We got hands on and learned how to melt and mold plastic coasters and key chains as these are the things they focus on. They made over 2000 coasters this year which is 140 kg of trash. 140 kg of trash saved by only two people from going to landfill! But they create much more than that and this is where they lead the path. They are true artists and our favorite piece BY FAR was Michelangelos David statue's head made of recycled plastic. We couldn't help but imagine what else we could create this way! Imagine all the things we could mold out of recycled plastic instead of producing it from virgin plastic nurdles!  Planters, table sets, plates, cups, chairs, tables,....... ๐ŸŽ† Thanks @preciousplasticbangkok for telling us about this fantastic project! ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature @pickup1million @oceana @mcs_uk #recycle #upcycle #art #craft #boho #plasticfree #fightplastic #breakfreefromplastic #beachcleanup #trashhero #thailand #chiangmai #chiangmaidesignweek #minimalism #vegan #conservation #nomoreplastic #plastic #trash #beachcleanup #cleanup #bethechange

Candles light up the gloomy, dark December days for those in the Northern Hemisphere (lucky you, Ozzies and Kiwis! ;) ) ๐Ÿ•ฏ And let's be honest, there's little better than a romantic light,a cuppa and a book while being all cuddled up in your favorite blanket. ๐ŸŒ† Did you know what candles used to be made from? About 5000 years ago the Egyptians dipped papyrus stick into animal fat and lit it up. The candle was born. Since then many different ethnic groups used different kinds of animal fat to make candles. Even whale oil was used a long time until the whale population depleted so drastically that the candle business with whales wasn't profitable anymore. Thanks, humans ๐Ÿ˜   Luckily we figured out a way to have candles without animal products. But with so many things these days, it's still not much more eco friendly. Many candles now use paraffin which is a by-product in the petroleum industry. It's not biodegradable and ,truth is, the fumes while burning a paraffin candle are toxic and pollutes the air heavily with their emission. ๐Ÿ˜ท Nowadays candles can be made of plant oil which is fine in many aspects: they're cruelty free, biodegradable and healthier to breathe in. โœ” But now, watch out where you purchase your plant oil candles as they're usually made of palm oil or soy bean oil. Both cam be unethically sourced and therefor be responsible for deforestation and habitat loss for wildlife like Orang-Utans and many species of birds. ๐Ÿ’” Make sure you purchase candles with a sustainable source of palm oil and soy bean oil. Buy them in glasses or tins, containers that you can reuse or are easily recycable. Or look out for unpackaged candles that you can put into a glass yourself. If you're a brand of producing eco friendly candles, feel free to message us, so we can show them to the world! Tune in tomorrow for another 'modern' alternative to candles. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #christmas #adventcalendar #vegan
As we've worked out by now, elephants are Thailand's most famous 'attraction'. ๐Ÿ˜ We never want to see any of you guys ever ride an elephant anymore โ›” but you can still get a pretty cool souvenir from Thailand made by elephants. ๐Ÿšฉ Elephants are vegans, just like we are, eating up to 300 kg of leaves and branches every single day. Their digestive system isn't the most efficient and so they also have to poop. A lot. ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐Ÿ’ฉ About 180 kg of poop is what an elephant produces every day. And most of it is nothing but undigested fibre. ๐ŸŒฑ And what can we make out of fibre, especially tree fibre? Right, paper! ๐Ÿ“– This is, where Tun from Elephant Poopoopaper Park @poopoopaperpark jumped in and created an entirely natural, eco friendly alternative to normal paper. It's similar to Thailand's other eco friendly version of paper, the mulberry paper. It definitely is more unique, though! ๐Ÿ˜‚ The Elephant Poopoopaper Park doesn’t just want to sell something, they want to teach people why they are doing what they are and let them get hands on in making a difference. Giving people the opportunity to see the process and interact will hopefully be more impactful and spark a desire to change other habits as well besides paper choices. ๐Ÿค“ They lead educational programs in the schools teaching about recycling and waste management and have even teamed up with @wwf_thai / @wwf donating a portion of all proceeds to support other conservation efforts. Creating alternatives from existing waste products can help cut down our impact on the planet and that’s a great thing. On site you learn step by step how to make paper out of poop and you definitely get hands on in the process. The tour is short but very informative and after that you can stay as long as you want, make more paper or even create your own notebooks, wallets, fans, postcards, photo frames etc. This is a kind of souvenir you really can consider buying without impact on our environment. ๐Ÿค—
Ornaments are undoubtedly the most important part of the Christmas tree (discussed in yesterday's Advent Calender Window) ๐ŸŽ„ It's a rather easy topic to stay eco friendly. ๐ŸŒฑ First and most eco friendly option is to simply reuse what you have. ๐Ÿ‘† No need to buy new ornaments each year. From my childhood days I remember that we had two sets of ornaments and we reused it for as long I celebrated Christmas at home which means...up until now :D For those of you who really want a different color each year you could ask around your friends, family or neighbours. Someone will be OK to do a little swap. It saves money and time as you don't have to buy new ornaments and still makes your tree shine in a new color. ๐Ÿค— And for whatever you buy or need new, there are several options that are better than others. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Choose long lasting materials for your new ornaments. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Choose glass over plastic ornaments. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Choose natural marerials over unnatural ones. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Choose DIY over store bought. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Choose meaningful ornaments over the ones that are "trendy" (you might not enjoy that pink owl with polka dots more than a year ;) ) For inspiration, Google and especially YouTube will be your friends. There are countless crafty channels out there that show you step by step how to make your own. That's upcycling or natural and meaningful and fun at once. It's like Kinder Surprise....just more eco-friendly ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒด๐Ÿข #navigatingnature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ #ecoadventcalendar #ecofriendly #zerowaste #breakfreefromplastic #christmas #weihnachten #navidad #noel #adventcalendar #adventskalender #love #travelblog #vegan #vegancouple #minimalism #dontbuy #reuse #recycle #upcycle #homemade #diy #christmasdecorations #christmasornaments #ornaments
Elephant sanctuaries, a very popular thing to do in Thailand and 100x better than any elephant riding. But watch out when you choose the sanctuary you want to visit. Many places lure people with the headline 'No Riding!' as if this was the only thing to consider to call it ethical. With this post we want to give you more details to look out for to call a santuary ethically: ๐Ÿ‘‰ No riding! Yes, still number 1! No place with riding the animal could ever be called ethical. ๐Ÿ‘‰Natural, big parks. Elephants are big animals and in their natural habitats they move daily for up to 70 km to forage a wide range and to fertilize a wide range of land. There should at least be one mud pit per group of elephants and a big pond of water. Elephants need to stay cool during the peak heat of the day. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Rest: A day with elephants is great, but elephants aren't usually active all day long. They need their rest especially in the peak heat of the day. Usually, sanctuaries will serve lunch for the visitors at that time of the day and let the elephants enjoy some quiet time meanwhile. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Small groups. Elephants are very calm, even in a big group of people as they all grew up around humans wto work for them. But still, that doesn't mean it's good for them. The smaller the group, the calmer the atmosphere and the better for the animal. Look out for small group camps or programs like "adopt an elephant for a day" to make sure the elephant has just one person every day to get used to and not 30. ๐Ÿ‘‰ No touching: While petting and hugging seems normal practices in most places, it's actually best to keep your distance. While feeding and brief touching can be seen as OK, hugging and petting is something we should keep at a minimum. Just put yourself in the animal's position, would you love to be constantly hugged by strangers? ๐Ÿ‘†Cages and Chains: From what we have heard (please correct us if not true) it is illegal in Thailand to leave elephants completely free range during night.
