This is possibly the most excited I've ever been to create a character...Anyone who knows me knows I love pirates. And since childhood there has always been one pirate, in particular, that inspired the extremes of queasy joy and delightful terror that makes a child dream of 'breaches, ambuscadoes, spanish blades, and hells five fathom deep', buried treasure, and all manner of sordid and nasty behavior... adventure and freedom. I fancy him my namesake (though me ma says it was a priest she knew, rest his soul)... CAPTAIN. JAMES. HOOK. Boris Karloff (1950), Cyril Ritchard (1960), Dustin Hoffman (1991), and Jason Isaacs (2003) are among my favorites in a long list of fantastically talented actors to embody J.M. Barrie's titular pirate king on stage and film... ...And I am beyond delighted to take up the helm of the fearsome Jolly Roger and sing and dance, mezmerize and terrify audiences of the gorgeous Southern Theater for one weekend only for Columbus Children's Theater. May 17th-19th, by sword and hook, we set sail! My Record Year - Day 80: Here’s an LP in honor of how I feel about my 32nd wedding anniversary. Despite a run of 676 performances, Frank Loesser’s “The Most Happy Fella” remains overshadowed by his smash Broadway hits “Guys and Dolls” (1950) and “How to Succeed in Business...” (1961) that bookended this 1956-57 production. In fact, the song “Standing on the Corner” may be the only tune people remember from the score, and few would even know it came from the show. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “They Knew What They Wanted,” “Fella” tells the story of Tony Esposito, a middle-aged Italian man making a good living growing wine grapes in the Napa Valley in 1927. Tony has been corresponding for a few months with a young woman named Rosabella, and she agrees to become his “mail order” bride after he sends her a photo (in true Cyrano fashion) of his handsome young foreman. Drama ensues. The show, with more than 30 musical numbers (there was a 3-LP version of the soundtrack) has been described as “one of the most ambitiously operatic works ever written for the Broadway theater.” As a half-Italian Napa native, I’ve had a soft spot for this dated but heartfelt love story since I first discovered it, and “Standing on the Corner” (sung in the show by one of his farmhands - played by Shorty Long - as he stands on Napa’s Main Street admiring the feminine scenery) has been a favorite tune since I learned it for a Napa High School vocal group, although we never sang it while standing on Main Street. That would have been too ironic. But great stuff from the amazing and prolific Frank Loesser. #frankloesser#broadway#musicaltheatre#themosthappyfella#soundtrack#vinylcollection#vinyl#vinyloftheday#vinylrecords#vinyls#rarevinyl#nowplaying#vinyladdict#nowspinning#vinyljunkie#napa#musicaltheater#napavalley#napahigh#broadwaymusical#italian#italianamerican#standingonthecorner#myrecords#winecountry
I wrote an epically long caption when I first tried to post this and the post failed which I’m taking as a sign I need to be more concise so HERE GOES. #aboutlastnight... we closed “A Star Is Born^3” and I have a lot of feelings. This show has been transformative for me and I’m not exaggerating so get ready for a gush sesh. In my time studying at NYU Tisch’s musical theater program I learned a lot of incredible things, things I still use today. But I also picked up quite a lot of baggage. I was told a woman in my body could never be believed as a romantic lead. I was told that even though I was one of the best dancers in my class I could never showcase it because I didn’t have a “dancer’s body”. And lastly I was told that there wasn’t a place for my voice in the current musical theater climate. In the past 6 weeks I have proven them wrong on every count. I played a romantic lead opposite the gorgeous, silly, and immensely talented @gildarnell. I danced with a top hat and even strapped on my tap shoes for the first time since college. And most importantly I sang with these two exquisite women, and even though our voices are totally different, they came together in the most incredible way to make something beyond special. I have always been in AWE of voices like @bricuoco’s and @talmorningdew’s, but to be welcomed and appreciated in return by them for everything I bring to the table is something I will treasure for the rest of my life. This show has been the biggest blessing at this moment in my life and I owe it all to @blakemciver. Thank you for loving me, believing in me, and trusting me with this. Thank you also to @jackbennynow for making us sound so good, to Tal and @emersoncollins for producing the hell out of this show, and to the rest of the cast for being so damn welcoming, supportive, and FUN. Can’t wait to keep playing with y’all because something tells me this isn’t the end, but rather just the beginning. To
Had the chance to watch Angels in America technical dress rehearsal last night, and it was a 3-hour emotional rollercoaster ride! I have watched the two-part National Theatre Live DVD version of it last year as a reference material for a character research, but it felt like I am watching it for the first time, still laughing on the jokes I already heard and feeling tearful on the heartbreaking scenes. It's really different watching a show in the flesh. This show is so intense! A must watch! @topperwhere 's portrayal of Prior Walter is sick (literally and figuratively 😁)! Different from his roles that I've watched in AHEB and Silent Sky. Feels like young anthony came out and became a drag queen with AIDS. 😂 Wowza! He is so amazingly good 🙌! To the cast, you are all awesome! Having to act multiple roles, and still be able to make the audience distinguish the difference between them, not only because of the costume and voice changes, but also because of the variation in every character's silhouette. (We wanted to take pictures with all of them but we're too shy.) And of course to our lovely IMT class parent, @nelgomez24 ! His portrayal is so good to the point that I got really irritated with his character, Louis Ironson, same as when I watched the NIT live. Congrats also to everyone involve, the staff, especially to our beshy, @yvonnegrussell ! Tulak and buhat pa more ! Thanks Atlantis for this opportunity of watching it live! 😍 ANGELS IN AMERICA will open tomorrow, March 22, at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza.
