Artichoke leaf mulch. My Artichoke is going bananas again this year, so needed some judicious pruning. The raised bed next to it did pretty poorly again last season (widdly runner beans, soggy garlic, encroaching bindweed) so I’m going to leave it dormant for a while. Thought I’d try the huge artichoke leaves as a mulch layer - waste not want not #inmygarden#raisedbeds#veggiegarden#artichoke#mulch#nodiggarden
We love mulch! The soil looks so naked without it - it makes us twitch to see! 🌱 Mulching is a simple act of biomimicricy- we are mimicking the self-mulching forest floor which keeps a constant layer of humus decomposing to feed the plants with nutrients, keep the microlife warm dark and cosy and keep everyone moist and happy! 🌱🌲 Over-mulching is definitely, possible, however (as shown above). Mulching right against the trunks of trees and stems of small plants will stop the airflow and rot the stems. Mulching in huge mounds also prevents airflow and may cause roots to grow unnaturally to compensate. The soil needs to breathe! The Spruce recommends a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around trees. And be sure to push mulch away from the base of the trunk so that it is not touching. Mulch responsibly. 😉 #mulch#overmulching#theoffgridpear#permaculture#trees#mulchresponsibly#biomimicricy#growyourown
