Accountability -- I so need it in my life. I'm pretty focused on the health and movements of others, and this often leads to my own health efforts slipping through the cracks. I struggle to feel driven by my own internal desires but feel the heat of the fire from a bit of external motivation. After considering it for a while, this week I started a health accountability group on Facebook. We are all supporting, encouraging, and holding each other accountable for health related goals -- anything from sleeping to eating, from exercising to implementing healthy habits and routines. โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € This morning I kicked off this week's focus of implementing my healthy morning routine. I drank a large glass of lemon water and then I worked out for an hour. It has been quite a while since I have got in a full hour workout, something that used to be a regular occurrence. In the past, when I kick off my morning right, I feel good and motivated to have healthy habits all day long (most of the time). โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € Then this evening, I got in this beautiful night walk along #springcreektrail as I listened to a book on tape. Mobility Monday: KB Overhead Press  Although not typically considered a mobility drill, the overhead press can be a great supplement to manual therapy or range of motion exercises to strengthen you within a new range of motion. There are a ton of variations here that can be valuable. We can help determine which is right for you!  The overhead press, when done correctly, is a basic VERTICAL PUSH pattern that focuses on scapular stability, thoracic spine extension, proper rib cage alignment, and sufficient rotator cuff activation and shoulder strength. Okay I have to say it! ๐Ÿ™‰ Fitness Influencers...STOP sticking your butt out because it looks better in videos!!! - This drives me bonkers!!๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™‰ - ๐Ÿ’ฅAnd it becomes a PROBLEM when people look to these videos for inspiration, motivation, advice or workoutsโ€ผ๏ธ - Here’s what’s WRONG with it:๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ - 1๏ธโƒฃ Form is KEY when it comes to building muscle and preventing injuries (I know because I’ve been there) and a lot of these videos do not show or teach good form. - 2๏ธโƒฃ Many influencers are showing “their” progression (advanced level) workouts without sharing where they started and how they got there. - 3๏ธโƒฃ A lot of these videos show “accessory” exercises like donkey kicks which are NOT going to get you the results you want! - So many people fall into the trap of watching so and so thinking, “That’s what I need to do to lose weight! Exactly what they’re doing because it’s working for them.” - STAAAHHHPPP๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿฝ‍โ™€๏ธโ€ผ๏ธ - ๐Ÿ‘‡๐ŸผHere’s 5 things to keep in mind when working out ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿฝ‍โ™€๏ธ - 1๏ธโƒฃ Make sure your BACK IS FLAT (tuck your pelvis, keep your abs and glutes tight) Do NOT arch your back ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿฝ‍โ™€๏ธ - 2๏ธโƒฃ SQUEEZE your glutes at the top of each exercise. Almost everything about this is flawless. - - - Somewhere during injuries, school, sports, we lose our ability to move optimally. I am definitely in this group. I would rather train hard and lift something heavy. BUT...in order to be in this field, we must sometimes take the time to move well first. - - - In the tactical world moving well improves reaction time, decreases the likelihood of injury, and optimizes strength and power. After a weekend full of travel, late nights and early morning flights, I was a bit sluggish today and pushed myself to get in the gym for a little while. . Whenever I take a few days off from the gym I like to get back into it with some bodyweight movement. Today was no exception and I broke out my favorite bodyweight exercise for the lower body, the single leg squat. . This exercise is no joke and really forces you to be strong and stabile through the foot and leg, both of which contribute to better power and speed in the golf swing. . You’re still benefitting your cardiovascular health and aerobic fitness if you’re doing the stair master, intervals, rollerblading, biking, playing intramural sports, etc. • I know some of y’all skip “cardio” because you don’t want to go on a run.. you don’t have to!! ๐Ÿ‘‰The Landmine Goblet Squat. A great exercise to strengthen the lower body, core, and work on hip mobility. ๐Ÿ˜‰This can be a great solution for lifters who can't squat correctly because of joint pain or mobility problems. For beginners, landmine squats teach proper squat form. For advanced lifters, they're easier on joints so you can augment your heavy back squats with landmine squats. The arc of the bar travels back as you squat down, so you have no choice but to sit back and stay upright. Doing so builds and strengthens the quads. ๐Ÿ‘‰Start with one end of the bar in a landmine unit, or if you don't have a landmine, just put one end of the bar in a corner. ๐Ÿ‘‰From there begin by holding the bar against your chest, slightly leaning into it and squat down and try to touch your elbows to the tops of your thighs or just inside your knees, depending on the width of your stance. ๐Ÿ‘‰It's important to set up with the bar against your chest instead of away from your body so that you maintain an upright torso and don't use just your arms to hold the weight. ๐Ÿ‘‰Use a longer pause at the bottom to help open the hips up and work on mobility if desired. Repeate for desired reps and sets.
