Our Francis Drake at Santo Domingo silk pocket square from our National Maritime Museum Collection being worn by @aghlotat.abdenour. 1585 was the beginning of a long and undeclared war between England and Spain. In that year, Sir Francis Drake left England with a fleet of ships to plunder Spanish colonial towns – disrupting Spanish imperial rule, and enriching both the English Crown and himself. In this map, Drake’s ships are shown at anchor by Santo Domingo, on the island of Hispaniola, whilst Spanish vessels burn in the harbour and the infantry attacks the town. A third of Santo Domingo was destroyed before a huge ransom of 25,000 ducats was given to the English invaders. Maps showing voyages such as this illustrated England’s emergence as a maritime power in the sixteenth century, as well as the developing empire, both through its geography and through drawings of unfamiliar animals. An incredibly flexible pocket square that can produce a number of beautiful colour combinations.
