BOOK // Just finished Another Planet by @traceythorn on Audible. Loved having Tracey’s warm and reassuring voice as my companion over the last couple of weeks and hearing her interpret what was written (and what was omitted) from her teenage diaries. . For the multi-media experience I have been replaying Baby the Stars Shine Bright and Idlewild (the soundtrack to my own suburban teenage years) and hearing the lyrics from a new perspective. Still love those strings (volume ++ essential). . #anotherplanet #recommendedreading #booklover #everythingbutthegirl #memoir #lyrics #writinginspiration #audible #traceythorn #suburbia

Books that make you reflect ✨ . (some swear words in this post) This is the rare memoir that makes you think more about your own life than the author's. If we're being honest, it's a little self-helpy for my tastes; if we're being really honest, I'm still getting something (I hope super good) out of it. . In On Being Human, Jen talks about bullshit stories - lies our Inner Asshole (IA) tells us. (Um, hi, hello, "Inner Asshole?" I've got one of those. That's the voice telling me I'm a garbage person. I'm fat. I'm never going to xyz.) Jen wants us to "recognize them and eradicate them so they don't rearrange your DNA and live in your body as truth." Yeah. I can get behind that. I know how toxic these stories can be, and how they can hold you back. And I also know how hard it is to shut your IA up. . So, here we are. I'm reading this & trying to soak it up, but also taking so many little reflective breaks to think about how I can be kinder to myself. To think about which bullshit stories I've been carrying around with me. To make myself think through how and why those just aren't true. I'm grateful for this book (and Jen) for inspiring that. . How are you being kind to yourself today? Are there are bullshit stories you're working to rewrite? ❤❤ . . . . . #tbr #bookstagram #bookstafam #bookstagrammer #booksofinstagram #booksofig #igreads #readersofinstagram #readersofig #readmorebooks #bookish #booknerd #bookworms #onbeinghuman #reflection #jenniferpastiloff #memoir

Yesterday my husband drove me, my sister and her fiancé to my first Open Mic Night. It was 15 miles away at a 24-hour cafe in a strip mall. Next to an optometrist and Pinkberry. A handful of people sat outside, a group of teens and a large family were indoors eating among other couples. The kitchen was loud, the conversations were louder. Music played in the background. In the furthest corner, a tapestry hung against the light, behind a stool. Nothing had started yet, but we counted three people with guitars. I held ‘We Died in Water’ tighter in my hands staring at the narrow walkway that led to the performing area, the busy, distracted customers, the musicians. I couldn’t do it. We left. This wasn’t the atmosphere for my art, I told myself. But, did I create that feeling? Or did I access a certain truth, that a home, at least for stories, for my story, isn’t going to be found in everyone or even at every place? I’m really not sure. But if you have room in your heart, I’d love to send ‘We Died in Water’ there. ~ Pre-order using the link in my bio.
The Sunset Cove Book Club recommends The Dog Went Over the Mountain: Travels With Albie: An American Journey (9/19) by @peterzheutlin read with advance copies from @pegasus_books via #galleymatch.	📚🐶🐾 “It was a home run! We all enjoyed the story. We have several travelers in the group who connected to the travel aspect and we have others who connected more to the dog aspect and we also have several who connected with both aspects. “The idea of taking a "road trip" was one of the principle topics discussed. Who has taken a road trip in the past? Two members who are sisters are now planning their own road trip for 2021 when they retire! White peonies on my nightstand fill up my heart. But not for the reasons you may think. You know how there is a way to record absolutely everything? What about recording smells? Smells trigger so much emotion in us. In this case, I remember being no more than 10 yo, summer, running around without a worry in the world, mind filled with adventure. My grandma nurtured these beauties in pregnant bushes by the gate to our dacha. Every time you entered or neared those gates, you smelled peonies. I didn’t think of it much then, but when I see or smell them now, there is a sense of calm and happy that washes over my often over anxious chest. @kenberger was sabotaged into getting them for me, and that’s double the joy. * * * #peonies #flowers #nightstand #onmynightstand #calm #relaxation #happines #joy #relationship #marriage #parenting #romance #love #nomad #nomadfamily #myborringlife #memoir #memories #stories #mystory #islandsofjoy #mindfullness #raisingagirl #womenwhowork #leanin
Picture this: It’s 1960’s America. The Beatles, JFK, Vietnam, MLK, space travel... and an 18 year old girl knows nothing about any of these major things happening in the world. ▪️ She has never: - Read a newspaper or magazine. - Watched TV. - Talked on a telephone. - Danced or kissed a boy. ▪️ Separated from her parents as a child and forbidden to speak to them, Patricia Chadwick’s entire life is controlled by a controversial (soon to be excommunicated) Catholic priest that founded a religious community called the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Center's members—many of them educated at Harvard and Radcliffe—surrender all earthly possessions and aspects of their life, including their children to him- just as Patricia was. ▪️ She yearns for a normal life and it’s clear that she isn’t conforming to how the Center wishes her to behave. So, just before she turns 18 - she is banished. ▪️ Now, she is: - Uneducated and has no life skills. - Completely cut off from any family. - Broke with no money at all. - Totally alone. ▪️ This is her account of growing up in the Feeney sect and the story of her faith and her fierce determination to succeed on her own after getting out. For fans of memoirs like Educated, this is a tale of resilience and grace, told in riveting prose, about a surreal childhood and a future of strength and amazingly, zero self-pity. . Thank you to @getredpr #partner @lorijill321 and @patricia_chadwick for the opportunity to check out this riveting memoir. . . . #littlesister #memoir #nonfiction #cults #religion #bookstagram #littlesistermemoir #getredpr #boston #bookblogger #bookstagramfeature #currentlyreading #amreading #bostonbooks #posthillpress #bookstagrammers #booksofinstagram #bookworm #nonfictionbooks #autobiography #bookfeature #booksharks #bookiehelper #bookshivers #bookapotamus
I read From the Corner of the Oval last year after finding and arc in a #littlefreelibrary (!!!) and I think it may be time for another reading. Book mail! Thank you @getredpr @posthillpress for sending me a copy of Little Sister by @patricia_chadwick. I am so excited to read this book. I am a huge fan of memoirs, particularly those based on cults like Educated and The Sound of Gravel. My boyfriend and I are obsessed with Leah Remini’s show about Scientology. And as someone with a masters from a seminary, studying religion is kinda my thing. So this one is 100% up my alley. Little Sister is on shelves now!! . . They promised her heaven, but there was no savior. . . Imagine an eighteen-year-old American girl who has never read a newspaper, watched television, or made a phone call. An eighteen-year-old-girl who has never danced—and this in the 1960s. . . It is in Cambridge, Massachusetts where Leonard Feeney, a controversial (soon to be excommunicated) Catholic priest, has founded a religious community called the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Center's members—many of them educated at Harvard and Radcliffe—surrender all earthly possessions and aspects of their life, including their children, to him. Patricia Chadwick was one of those children, and Little Sister is her account of growing up in the Feeney sect. . . Separated from her parents and forbidden to speak to them, Patricia bristles against the community’s draconian rules, yearning for another life. When, at seventeen, she is banished from the Center, her home, she faces the world alone, without skills, family, or money but empowered with faith and a fierce determination to succeed on her own, which she does, rising eventually to the upper echelons of the world of finance and investing. . . A tale of resilience and grace, Little Sister chronicles, in riveting prose, a surreal childhood and does so without rancor or self-pity. . . . . . #memoir #littlesistermemoir #bookcommunity #booklove #bookstagram #bostonbooks #posthillpress #theunreadshelfproject2019 #booksharks #bookshivers #cults #nonfictionbooks

I did it, I released my first book. I really am thankful to be in this position, to have friends and family who support me when I do these random ventures. Family that have taught me how to be a good person, work hard and to never give up if I truly want something. They’ve been with me through every dark moment without fail. Family that gave me the freedom to follow my dreams, no matter the cost. Friends that like every post, friends that haven’t gone behind my back and are here for me even if they don’t need something from me. Thank you for joining me on this journey. I hope those who buy the book, enjoy reading from cover to cover. ⁣ ⁣ I’ll be back soon with some new work, my next creative venture and even more stuff that I’ve kept to myself for the past few months. The old me is back, the one that was six weeks ahead. ⁣ ⁣ Thank you
Why is it that I enjoy reading about death? Probably the same reason I love reading horror: it forces us to confront our biggest fears. But there’s also something to be said about demystification. Americans in particular like to keep the gruesome at arm’s length: sterilizing, embalming, concealing. Doughty’s memoir is an attempt to peel back the mask and answer the physical (rather than metaphysical) questions about what happens to us when we die.⠀ ⠀ It may not be for the faint of heart, but Doughty’s drop dead hilarious memoir is candid and eye-opening, and it’s the perfect read-alike to Mary Roach’s STIFF. She also has a new book coming out this September, WILL MY CAT EAT MY EYEBALLS?, answering kids’ questions about death, and I for one absolutely can’t wait to get my hands on it.⠀ ⠀ #smokegetsinyoureyes @thegooddeath @w.w.norton #memoir #nonfiction #death #mortician #bookstagram #bookreviews #igreads #booksbooksbooks #ilovebooks #bibliophile #readersofinstagram

⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Princess Diarist - Carrie Fisher • • • Ok, this was not at all what I was expecting. I’m not really sure what Carrie Fisher aimed to accomplish with The Princess Diarist. It tended too much towards ‘poor little rich girl’. She kept saying that she didn’t want to be an actress and this all just happened to her, but I’m not sure that’s how life really happens. The final sentence of the book made it seem like she regretted being Leia. And that’s ok. But is writing a book about being Leia necessary in that case? She’s just further cashing in on Leia - which she claims to really dislike doing. • The majority of the book is dedicated to rehashing her affair with Harrison Ford. It is a trip down memory lane that really is not aimed at Star Wars fans and does not cast her or Ford in a good light. Again, I’m not really sure why it was necessary to air out the past in this way. It’s not particularly juicy, it’s just a sad story. • Her writing is great. Her poetry and journal entries about Ford are beautiful, if I could put aside the implications of the themes. She is so honest and open, which is incredible. It’s sad to hear the audiobook in her voice (I always try to listen to memoirs read by the author). Altogether it was an uncomfortable but at times interesting read. #bookstagram #book #books #theprincessdiarist #carriefisher #memoir #autobiography #bookclub #bookish #mybookshelf #reading #library #bibliophile #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookworm #bookgram #bookobsessed #booksbooksbooks #ilovereading #instareading #booklover #bookpost #booknerd #instareads #bookstagrammer
From the author of The Gnostic Gospels, Elaine Pagels writes this memoir about her faith and her life's work as a religious historian after the deaths of her young son and husband more than 25 years ago. I enjoy books like this, about 'faith wrestlers,' of any tradition. Especially those who leave and come back. I am intensely proud of these wonderful writers. This was the final #flowerfieldwriters class before summer break, and these brilliant folk presented readings of their work that were inspiring, thought-provoking, deliciously funny and profoundly moving. Out East by @glynner85 is a memoir of one summer that changed a life. I sat down one afternoon to just read a few pages and I did not put it down until I reached the end. Yes, it was that good. Glynn is living what most of us would consider an amazing life -he’s in New York City, working in publishing and has a wonderfully supportive family and friend group. But, still he feels something is missing. He decides to take a chance on a house share in The Hamptons which changes everything. This coming of age and coming out story is so full of heart and raw emotion. The writing is flawless. What I found most compelling was his honesty and ability to talk about things most men would not dare share; we are all lonely sometimes and all wish for love in our lives. Thanks to @books_with_taylor for recommending this one. I loved it! ❤️📚 . . .

I’ve been calling myself a writer since 2016, but I haven’t been so certain or sure of myself as I am now. I have a certain project that is actually going well despite me not really writing much lately for it. I went to uni today for a tutorial and it was the first time I felt like I had improved, and that those improvements were leading somewhere. It was the first time I felt that others, teachers and published writers etc, had a real belief in me- what I’m writing and how I’m writing it. I feel lifted and enthused to make notes for continuing the writing. I feel like I have a bit of direction. If you wanna read an excerpt it's up on the website - keep an eye on there as I'll be adding more and more writing in future, fiction and non! . . . . #parentingafterloss #lifeafterloss #rainbowbaby #sidsawareness #infantloss #babyloss #miscarriage #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #writer #student #studentparent #master #masters #masterofarts #creativewriting #creativenonfiction #narrative #memoir #fiction

📚📝 M E E T the B O O K L A D Y| Always with a Book Hi! I’m Leslie and this is me in my element. Well, kinda. It’s a gorgeous summer day in Chicago. 🌳 There’s a nice breeze and soccer is happening behind me. I also have dog hair on my sleeve because this delightfully clownish #basset of mine *insists* on sitting on my lap while we drive. She is 56 lbs and no lap dog. 🐶 My daughter has been playing soccer since she was 3.5 years old. I’ve been writing and reading since before that. I guess I turned semi-professional about 10 years ago, kind of like her. She’s 12. 😉 🥅⚽️📝 So when I drop her off at soccer practice, I sit in the car and write. Or read. But never at games. Those I watch. After training, she jumps in the car and we are both sweaty, but for different reasons, I tell her, “L👀k at us, both working on our dreams,” and she grins. ❤️⚽️📝 So if you’re just joining, here’s what I do: I read/review and host bestselling and debut authors on my author interview series, always on Wednesday, sometimes Friday, too. 78 Degrees of Wisdom . Sometimes life gives you a story you couldn’t even dream, let alone make up. This last month has disappeared from view after another brush with death, the sudden loss of my father-in-law, and a spiritual quest all within one month’s time, all while still being a wife, a mother of three little boys, and the caretaker of our little home. Sometimes I can’t even believe it myself what life has brought me, said in the most sincere and positive of ways. George Carlin’s quote stands true still… “Life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting, ‘Holy shit, what a ride!’” . A lot more story coming... ———————————— Words written from Rachel Pollack’s book, “Seventy-Eight Degreess of Wisdom: A Book of Tarot”... . 12. “The word ‘temperance’ derives from the Latin ‘tempare’ which means ‘to mix’ or ‘to combine properly’. The person who has released his or her inner self is characterized not only by moderation but by an ability to combine the different sides of life. Many people can only deal with life by parcelling it off into sections. They create one personality for business and another for their private lives; both are false. They consider certain moments and situations to be ‘serious’ and others to be ‘fun’ and are careful never to smile at a serious subject. The people they love are often not the people whom they find sexually attractive. All these separations derive from the inability to take life as it comes, moment by moment. Temperance combines the elements of life. In reality it combines the elements of the personality, so that the person and the outer world flow together naturally.” . . . #wisdom #herosjourney #spiritualjourney #spirit #loss #death #tarot #highpriestess #temperance #confrontation #darkness #light #selfawareness #greatmother #motherlove #intuition #morality

The ego never wants to release energy; it tries to hoard it against the fear of death. As a result new energy cannot get in. We see this very graphically in people’s breathing when they panic. A lot more story coming... ———————————— Words written from Rachel Pollack’s book, “Seventy-Eight Degreess of Wisdom: A Book of Tarot”... . 10. “Beyond all its symbolism the Hanged Man affects us because it shows a direct image of peace and understanding. The calm shows so strongly in the card because the Hanged Man has surrendered to the rhythms of life. In the old initiations surrender involved joining the rituals instead of just watching them. For many modern people it involves releasing the emotions they have locked up for years. Notice that both these things are acts; surrender to the World Tree is an actual step we take, not a passive waiting.” . . . #wisdom #herosjourney #spiritualjourney #spirit #loss #death #tarot #highpriestess #temperance #confrontation #darkness #light #selfawareness #greatmother #motherlove #intuition #morality #spontaneity #traveler #strength #truth #connection #separation #peace #understanding #worldtree #breath #writing #memoir #wildstrands
Anyone else on this hamster wheel today? - Mothering is tough, and trying to pursue our own passions and goals outside of motherhood makes it even more difficult, but at the end of the day, so very worth it. - I'm in the midst of editing my tongue-in-cheek memoir speaking to the highs and lows of motherhood, because I've found laughter is great therapy, and also, if I end up laughing so hard I cry, that's not such a bad thing either. - There have been times as a stay-at-home mom I've felt isolated beyond belief, and other times I've felt supported by an amazing sisterhood of women who are sharing this journey, and that's part of what inspired me to write this book. - I want all moms, regardless of their current situation, to know they aren't in this alone. And also, their children are not the only ones using $12 lipstick as a crayon. #editing #amediting #amwriting #writing #momwriter #writermom #writerscommunity #writersofinstagram #writersofinsta #memoir #amwritingmemoir #mom #momlife #adorableinterruptions #motherhood #parenting #wereallinthistogether #momslifteachotherup #womenlifteachotherup
A great many mystics and shamans have said that their visions showed them how all things connect, how everything fits together, because the spirit unites the entire universe.” . . . #wisdom #herosjourney #spiritualjourney #spirit #loss #death #tarot #highpriestess #temperance #confrontation #darkness #light #selfawareness #greatmother #motherlove #intuition #morality #spontaneity #traveler #strength #truth #connection #separation #peace #understanding #worldtree #breath #writing #memoir #wildstrands

The legacy of grit… When Granny passed away in December of 1989, our families joined together to mourn her passing, remember her, and visit with each other. Then we parted ways with some of her belongings because we wanted to remember. Her little red bible, a tattered pink depression quilt she made alone, and an occasional table Dad gave her are my most beloved possessions for they remind me of her grit. Granny was born in 1914 into a family of farmers/carpenters. In those days one couldn’t just subsist on farming. She grew up poor, like everyone else, and in 1932 married a young man who would also try to make a living farming. The conditions of the land they leased were dire, but they continued to farm it until 1956 when my grandfather died of cancer. With no funds to pay for his funeral, her adult sons took over the task. A week after her laying her husband to rest and facing a failing crop, my granny could not pay the land lease. She did not ask for help, but instead left the army barracks my grandfather had fashioned into a home and moved into town. For the next 30 years she worked as a cafe waitress, a grocery store sacker, a clothing factory seamstress, and not once faltered or complained. On her own she became a homeowner, saved for the future, loved her grandbabies and great-grandbabies, and left an inheritance for future generations to grow. I am very proud of the legacy Granny left us – a resolve to work hard and carry on when you want to fall apart. As I am writing this, I am also thinking of your grandmothers and/or great-grandmothers and realizing that they too were heroines. The Greatest Generation, born between 1910 and 1925, had no choice but to develop grit – the ability to maintain courage, resolve and strength of character under any circumstance. Let us also remember them when we celebrate Independence Day. I love you Granny! ❤️🇺🇸❤️ #farmhousedecor, #vintagedecor, #pocketofmyhome, #vintagehome, #antiquestyle,

We need to confront feelings and desires long hidden from our conscious thoughts. If we attempt to transform a wholly rational process we create another kind of persona, Something very like this in fact happens quite often. Many people feel a lack of spontaneity in their lives. They look around them and read books on psychology, and observe, with a certain jealousy, or even shame at their own repressions, the characteristics of spontaneous people. And then, rather than follow the fearful process of releasing their hidden fears and desires, they carefully imitate spontaneity.” . . . #wisdom #herosjourney #spiritualjourney #spirit #loss #death #tarot #highpriestess #temperance #confrontation #darkness #light #selfawareness #greatmother #motherlove #intuition #morality #spontaneity #traveler #strength #truth #connection #separation #peace #understanding #worldtree #breath #writing #memoir #wildstrands
