As the industry gets increasingly competitive and companies look to outperform one another and remain profitable, marketers should still not forget the importance of long term brand building and emotional engagement with consumers. Pizza Hut’s CMO Jean Ler (pictured) told A+M in an interview that for a company to stay on course, it is extremely important for marketers to constantly invest in building brand equity. According to her, most companies are focused on short term sales such as promotions rather than having a concrete plan on building brand equity. By doing so, however, the chances of eroding the brand equity is high, Ler said. Having worked in brands such as PETRONAS, Mondelez, Kellogg’s and Friesland Campina, Ler said the pace within the F&B industry compared to FMCG is faster. As such, companies within this space might not have the luxury of time when it comes to long term brand building. “Food and price are the most important elements in the F&B industry, so you have to be on the ground at the point of purchase and make sure that people notice your offerings,” she said. While Pizza Hut is a well known brand, over the years, in markets such as Malaysia, it gradually became viewed as a “quiet, conservative and dated” brand targeting individuals between the ages of 30 to 40 years old while its competitors, Ler said, were viewed as “youthful”. As such, Ler jumped at the chance to rejuvenate the brand, moving from the FMCG space to F&B near the end of 2016. Known for its global brand positioning “For The Love of Pizza”, Ler and her team localised it into “Authentic Pizza Experience Made Passionately” at the end of 2017. Seven interesting facts about Stephen Hawking. 1) Stephen grew up in a house where education was very important. His parents were both academics who had studied at Oxford University. Dinner times were often spent in silence while the family read books! 2) When he was a teenager, Stephen and his friends built a computer out of old clock parts, telephone switchboards and other recycled items. His friends nicknamed him, ‘Einstein!’ 3) When Stephen was 17, he went to Oxford University to study physics and chemistry. He later said that he found his first year very boring! After graduating from Oxford, he went to Cambridge University to further his studies in cosmology (the science of the origin of the universe). 4) Sadly, when he was 21, Stephen was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) and told that he only had two years to live. MND gradually affects the brain cells that communicate with the body’s muscles. Over time, sufferers struggle to walk, talk and even swallow without help. 5) Stephen used walking sticks and crutches after his diagnosis, but as his illness got worse he had to use an electric wheelchair to get around. He became notorious for driving it a little too fast around the streets of Cambridge and running over other students’ toes! 6) Stephen made many important contributions to the world of science. He developed theories about how the world began and furthered our understanding of black holes, stars and the universe. 7) Stephen was always keen for his work to be accessible to everyone, not just scientists. He wrote books that explained his theories in simple terms for everyone to understand, including a children’s book. His most famous book, A Brief History of Time, sold more than 10 million copies.
Five interesting facts about Steve Jobs: 1. He was given up for adoption as an infant: Soon after his birth, he was given up for adoption by his biological mother, Joanne Schieble, because her parents did not approve of her relationship with his father Abdulfattah Jandali as he was a Muslim. Being a catholic, she could not abort the child and being unmarried, had to give away her child as she did not want to bring shame onto her family. 2. His adoptive parents had to go through legal battle to adopt him. His mother refused to sign the adoption papers when he was placed with Paul and Clara Jobs, because neither of them had a college education. She even took the matter to court, but upon losing the case, agreed to release her baby after the couple promised to attend college. Clara Jobs was frightened of losing custody of him for six months, and later even regretted her decision after he grew to be a difficult child. 3. He was bullied at school. He did not enjoy high school and had a pretty low 2.65 GPA. He was often bullied at Crittenden Middle School in Mountain View after being transferred there in the sixth grade. He became a “socially awkward loner” and eventually gave his parents an ultimatum that if they did not take him out of Crittenden, he would drop out of school. 4. Did a summer job at Hewlett-Packard. At the age of 13, he was offered a summer job by Bill Hewlett of Hewlett-Packard after he cold-called him to ask for parts for an electronics project. He did minor assembling work, but felt like he “was in heaven”. 5. Was a college drop out. Interestingly, Jobs himself did not complete his college education. He dropped out of Reed College in Portland, Oregon in 1972 because he did not want to waste his father’s money. His adoptive father was a high school dropout. While he would later become a millionaire, his biological paternal grandfather was a self-made millionaire who did not go to college.
